Thanks for this video - incredible instructions! Quick question- does the initial cylinder need to have thick-ish walls before starting shaping with the rib? I tried this on a cylinder with thin walls (walls as thin as I would want them on a regular non-shaped piece) and eve et thing fell apart :(

this is hands down the BEST beginner rib throwing explanation I've ever found, and I'm in college taking a throwing class. I'm subscribing for more, thanks for the clarity and detail you go into on exactly what you do with your hands/the tools/ the parts you cannot see etc, 10 for 10!🙌

Hammer down clay make sure it sticky🍦🔌 Enough water to slide around the clay🐻🐻 Only let hand do the work🎉🎉 Make sure the center comes🎥🎥 Don’t tackle the clay!!!!!! Make sure right hand is on clay🦾🦾🦾🥹

1. You can go to funkyfiredarts to learn more clay tips 2. Use pressure to get the centering done quickly 3. Make sure you get enough water 4. Lean the hand over the clay 5. Don’t force it in with the arms…. elbow on hipbone!

As you stated tons of ways to open. This method is good from small amounts of clay under 3 pounds but anything above this there will be issues as the clay will be stronger than your finger. Regardless of size if the Clay isn’t centered this problem will happen. It can happen even after if it’s knocked off center. I will say regardless how one does their opening having support is very important.

Good eye! Not at this stage but John is experimenting with firing them to cone six post Pit Fire. The majority of the color stays and his cone six clay body vitrifies. We are still testing this method and are not ready to sign off on it just yet, but its pretty exciting stuff.

A few questions. 1) I'm assuming the pots in this vid are bisque fired. Are the also burnished or just bisque fired? 2) What wax do you use to seal them? or 3) do you use a spray to seal them?
@QueenCityClay4 жыл бұрын
Hi Douglas, Yes the pots are bisque fired, some are burnished with a sig some are not, and most of our studio members brush on Thompsons' Water Seal. Thanks for watching!

Super helpful to see this. I did not completely understand why you sometimes flip the rib over. Could you help me understand?
@QueenCityClay4 жыл бұрын
I use the straight side of the rib so I can just get a little bit closer to the wheel head and rib more of the pot, and I use the rounded side at the shoulder because it doesn't have any corners to accidentally leave marks. Flipping the rib gives you the added benefit of switching to a side without slip build up on the surface. If your rib doesn't have corners or you are holding it at more of an angle, you might not have to flip it. I hope that clears it up a bit for you
