Thank you so much for this helpful video! I’m curious if you think the fence material matters? In other words, I was planning on getting a four foot tall post and rail type of fence and was wondering if the corrugated plastic would be able to be mounted on top of that?
@JulieVaughn2 ай бұрын
@@LaurenSoderberg-d5w I think that the corrugated panels could be mounted on top of pretty much anything as long as you cover at least top 4 feet of your fence on a 6 foot fence and there’s no trees or other climbable structures close enough to the fence for a cat to jump from. The trick is think like a cat when you look up to the escape routes from your yard. My husband cut down our beautiful Japanese maple tree because our Houdini cat was using it to escape. You might run into height restrictions if you add 4 more feet of height to a four foot tall fence but that would be at about the height ours is which technically is against code where I live but they don’t enforce unless someone complains.

@ thank you for your response! How did you attach the corrugated plastic to the top of the fence? Would you be able to show a close up photo or something?
@JulieVaughn2 ай бұрын
@ not sure how I would do that here. You used to be able to do video replies on KZbin but I don’t see any way to do that now. It was my husband who did the work so I can’t even say exactly what he did but it wasn’t terribly complicated. It probably also depends on the fence you’re attaching it to. I might be able to make another video but not today.

First of all thank you for commenting. I appreciate all comments positive or negative. Sorry about the music. Hopefully the information in the video makes it worth the music or you can mute it. It’s not immediately obvious to me how to change the audio once a video is uploaded and I have just spent about a half hour trying to figure it out. I do know that I’m stuck with KZbin offerings for alternative audio and that right there will also be time consuming because I really don’t like much of what they offer. When you add music to a video, you have to either have rights to it or be sure that it won’t get a copyright strike. So there’s more to it than just changing the music. Not saying that the music on this video will never change but I don’t have time to put into that right now.

Hi there. What size in hight did you do the see through panels along the fence ? Im looking too install some along mine for the cat but im not sure how high to go🌻 thanks
@JulieVaughn5 ай бұрын
Ours are a 2 foot extension over the top of our 6 foot fence, however we found out after the fact that it’s actually against code. Our code enforcement doesn’t do anything if nobody complains, and nobody ever has so we’re good but you should check your local code before making your fence taller. However, as long as there’s nothing near the fence that a cat could jump from even just putting these panels on over the fence should work because cats can’t dig their claws into the panels which makes them pretty much impossible to climb up.

Perfect, this was my question too. So 2 feet in width for the plastic. I have to try this. My handyman made a catio on my deck, but the first thing that happened was it caught a bird and then one of my cats killed the bird. So I need to figure out a different way to prevent the cats from leaving without catching birds. 😞

I noticed you put a hole in the middle of coconut fiber. Will the Water Lilies be able to grow up through the coconut fiber without the hole. I have a lily root where the lilies are growing from the end of the root about 4 inches in length not from the middle of the root. Thank you so much for the video. Very helpful
@JulieVaughn6 ай бұрын
The type of coconut fiber I’m using in this video which comes on a roll is very densely packed at first and I wouldn’t put it over the crown of the lily without making a hole for it. You can make the hole wherever you need to but you don’t want to cover the crown of the lily with anything. Eventually the coconut fiber does loosen up and new sprouts and roots can then come through it. When I’m potting up a new one I always try to position the crown upwards in the middle of the pot because then I don’t have to repot it for a longer amount of time. It’s ok to change the direction of the crown when repotting.
@JulieVaughn6 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, and you don’t necessarily need the sink protectors as long as you put rocks on top of the coconut fiber. The bigger your fish, the bigger the rocks should be. I’ve lately not been using the sink protectors and no trouble so far. The coconut fiber just helps to keep the lily soil out of the pond.

@@JulieVaughn so you don't have to lay the root 4 inches long horizontally in the bucket you can stand the root up vertically?
@JulieVaughn6 ай бұрын
@@pamelaselbe3784 as long as the main roots are covered with soil you don’t. I always try to have them as vertical as possible because then I usually don’t have to repot as often. That’s also why I plant in a dishpan.

@JulieVaughn6 ай бұрын
Yikes! I actually never thought about that until you asked this question. I do inspect them regularly to make sure that they’re not breaking down and make new ones if necessary however, apparently according to Google what they are made out of does include things that aren’t so good. That being said I haven’t had any issues. All my fish are healthy. The only thing that I can think of off the top of my head that might work good as an alternative would be expanding waterfall foam, which is designed for ponds and is guaranteed to be nontoxic and fish safe. You would have to put it around the edge maybe of a pot, or squirt into pvc pipe maybe? I don’t know but now you’ve given me a new thing to ponder. I do have several cans of expanding waterfall foam so maybe I’ll put my thinking cap on and come up with another idea. Thanks for your question.

Exactly. I do most of the daily maintenance on our pond and I do ALL of plant maintenance in and outside of the pond unless it requires a ladder. Then my husband does it because he doesn’t want me to hurt myself or be in pain. It’s called cooperation.

How did you install the panels to your fence?
@JulieVaughn8 ай бұрын
My husband built a frame that he attached to the fence and then attached the panels to the frame. He first made pilot holes in the panels so they wouldn’t crack. You can also attach the panels directly to any existing fence right over the fence all the way up without making the fence taller in many cases. Cats can’t climb it. In our case our neighbors didn’t mind us making the fence taller but in a lot of places there are rules about how tall your fence can be. It’s not so much about height, it’s more about material that cat claws can’t get into. I hope this helps.

Sorry I just noticed this comment. I’m not sure if you’re referring to the netting or the paneling. The netting is either bird netting or deer netting, I’m pretty sure most of it is just regular bird netting that you use to keep birds out of fruit trees. They also make elastic netting which works well too but it’s more expensive and wears out faster. The bird netting wears out too but it’s good for at least 3 years and all you have to do to check it is pull on it a little and you can tell if it’s gone brittle from UV exposure. The panel’s are plastic corrugated panels and they come in clear like we have and also lots of other colors that give more privacy. Cats cannot climb them at all. Both items can be purchased at home improvement stores, like Home Depot.
