Howdy, fellow Texan! Great question. To legally fly drones for commercial purposes, you must first get your FAA Pt. 107 certification(aka Remote Pilot Certificate). You can find information on how to get certified here: www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/become_a_drone_pilot#ftp. To learn how to map using a drone with LiDAR it really depends on the platform you choose. Some drone companies offer a complete package, like our Discovery 3, that have the camera and LiDAR integrated, while others you will choose the LiDAR sensor you need as well as the drone and other components. You will also need to learn how to process the LiDAR data into useful data. There are lots of software options out there for this, depending on what your needs are as far data deliverables go. No matter the system you choose, the steps are relatively the same. Plan the mission, fly the mission, and process the data. All in all, you should find a drone platform that works best for what you will be flying it for and most manufacturers offer some sort of training for their platform. Good question! We focus on aerial collection and use ground shots primarily to validate drone data. When there are areas with extremely dense vegetation and where the sun can touch the ground, we will overfly an area and over collect to get ground data. There are locations where absolutely no light (LiDAR) can get through a canopy but in most cases we are able to get good ground data. Our products and services are collecting accurate data in the Southeast USA (with kudzu and dense foliage) and in East Texas (pine plantation) where we’re based. Both of these are very challenging environments where the above process gets accurate data.

HI Allan, thanks for your question. We do see edges of ponds and can identify water surface and the Discovery unit will not penetrate water accurately. If you haven't already, check out bathymetric lidar systems which are made to deal with water refraction... That technology is amazing too!

Yes having photography with lidar helps identify improvements and to create full survey deliverables.
