I used 1-1/2" couple with a couple rounds of tap for my 4 Gallon Rigid. I think using 1-1/2" PVC system is better regular flex hose, should have comparable performance against 2" PVC system for my case. I am too cheap to buy a CFM meter to prove it.
@SlowandExpensive3 күн бұрын
As long as it's working for your needs that's all that matters. I like to switch back to the flex hose after the PVC in some situations. Here's a cool video on how to make short hoses you may enjoy kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKOccqJ7dsiUptU

Just stumbled on your channel... love it!! How do you deal with static build up in the PVC pipes??
@SlowandExpensive10 күн бұрын
Thanks! I don't really do anything about static build up. I've heard a few things about explosions but I'm not sure how accurate the information is. It seems like it would be more of an issue with a central dust collection system with lots of pipe. The majority of my PVC runs are just a few feet in length. The one over the table saw is the longest and it's only about six feet.

Hi. I really need your help I want to by a Ridgid shop vac. I need to suck RATS from home walls!!! What model and HP do you recommend and what hose diameters and length is the best to maximize the suction power? Pls is very important! Thank you for your time.
@SlowandExpensive18 күн бұрын
Any of the more powerful models are good. I believe Home Depot had a 5hp 16 gallon for only $60 for black Friday that you may still be able to get. Some of the more expensive models aren't as noisy they have sound reduction SNR. A larger diameter hose would be better and a 12 foot length may suit your needs.

I've built a box style also. I used 1/2 round bull nose router bit and cut a groove on the overhang on the lid. Use caulk and put a 3/8 gap filler/backer rod (it's a soft closed cell foam used for caulking). And it pretty much eliminated any dust getting into the shopvac. I clean my filter two to three times a year, unless I forget to check the box and it over fills. But thanks for the inspiration. I'm also running the cheap double cyclone. The baby cyclone collects a little more. Also, I empty that one every three to four boxes full.

I've used the original dust deputy and loved it. I'm using the Super dust deputy now and it's very good but either it's not quite as good as the smaller one or I'm just sucking up a greater amount of the super fine stuff as i added a bigger sander. I wish someone would do a side-by-side comparison of the performance using various bins. Like square versus round, wide versus narrow. Something like a 5-gallon bucket versus your wide round container. I expect one beats the other.
@SlowandExpensiveАй бұрын
Instead of using one large cyclone (super dust deputy) in your setup you could use multiple smaller ones. It actually may work better. This is how the dyson vacuums are set up. There are several small cyclones setup in a circle over the container rather than a single one. It would probably take at least six dust deputys to equal the air flow of the super dust deputy. Just a thought :)
@mikeconroy2651Ай бұрын
@@SlowandExpensive actually, it's funny you mention that. I wanted to put a prefilter on my sander and was thinking about taking two old vac canisters from the Hoover wind tunnel vacs and put them in my dust collection line at the sander. They are easy to pop out and clean, and i was thinking two might be able to deal with the volume of air the dust collector pulls but opted for a small 4" Chinese cyclone versus the experiment. Mainly because I was afraid I'd need 3 of the Wind Tunnel chambers to move the amount of air anything close to what it does now.

I never used one of these dust collectors so I bought a Bauer from harbor freight, same design but a different color. Anyhow my question is does that box have to be air tight? I noticed you didn’t use anything on the lid.
@SlowandExpensive3 ай бұрын
It does need to be air tight. If there are any leaks some of the dust can get through to the vacuum. The box from the video had somewhat of a leak at the back because I used 1/4" plywood. It really needs to be made from at least 1/2" so it can't flex.

Where do you buy an Xmaster cyclone separator
@SlowandExpensive3 ай бұрын
I got mine on ebay years ago for around $28. They are no longer available and haven't been for a long time. The last time I purchased a cyclone was also years ago and I bought them on ebay. I got three 3rd generation SN50's for $45 plus shipping straight from China. Now it's even difficult to find an SN50 (any model) and when you do they are almost as much as a dust deputy if not more. The price on the Dust Deputy has come down from what it used to be. You can get one from Amazon for $40 and it looks to be most similar to the Xmaster. There is also a Dewalt on Amazon for around the same $.

I have a lot of experience with hydrocyclones, basically the same except for liquid applications. The reason the models with the extended ceiling, as you described it works better, is because as the diameter of the cyclone decreases, the centrifugal forces within the cyclone increases generating greater separational force. Contrary to what most people think, the larger the cyclone, the less efficient the separational forces exist. We used hydrocyclones that were 4 inch diameter at the top with a 1.5 inch inlet, narrowing over a distance of 6 feet lone to a 1 inch outlet on both the top and bottom and generated an estimated 1000g of separation force within the cyclone.
@SlowandExpensive3 ай бұрын
Interesting. So several small cyclones could potentially work better than a large one on a large dust collection setup?
@dmeenkster3 ай бұрын
@@SlowandExpensive , yes. Large ones are sometimes used to separate large quantities of, or large pieces as a type of prefilter, or in situations where the separation doesn’t have to be optimized. Hydro cyclones are used to clean oil spills out of ocean water, but they aren’t large cyclones, but rather are lots of smaller diameter cyclones plumbed through manifolds that have controls to regulate the pressure of the inlet and outlet.

Nah won't work for me. Wait a minute .. Drawer pulls that will work , huh there is the air line blow gun fix I have a problem with. Thanks OUT OF Gas! My motor cycle has no gas gauge. Solution is trip meter. fill up and reset trip meter to mileage of 1/2 what it takes leaving enough to get to station or every time meter says 200 miles time for gas . Most bikers know this from experience.
@SlowandExpensive4 ай бұрын
My motorcycles don't have fuel gauges either but the whole gauge cluster is fried in my truck. No speedometer, odometer, temp gauge or fuel. It's been like this for several years now. Luckily it's never overheated. I found someone that rebuilds them on ebay for $125. Just haven't sent mine to him yet. It's a common issue in many different vehicles. The modules go bad on the back of the cluster and effect some or all of the gauges :)

Thanks for the video. Though, the cake test is invalid. Only the smallest particles ever make it through to the vacuum. By reusing the same batch of dust over and over, most small particles are removed from the earlier tests leaving fewer and fewer for each subsequent test. The ratio would likely have been much smaller if you used brand new dust at each iteration, thereby replenishing the small particles which would then contribute to a quicker accumulation of cake.

Does the same process work with ABS as well as PVC?
@SlowandExpensive4 ай бұрын
Maybe. I've never used ABS. The PVC I use is foam core so it machines nicely. If you can cut it with a miter saw without any issues I'd say it would probably work fine. It seems like ABS could be more brittle and have more melty properties with the blade but then again it could be fine.
@urwholefamilydied4 ай бұрын
I can't imagine this is the quickest way to take an eighth off a pvc pipe lol. Why not just use a router table with a fence and a stop? This was a decent solution if you only have a table saw I suppose. Adding material to a smaller pipe would also work... gorilla tape maybe and then seal it so it can't come undone? Just brainstorming any other way that doesn't involve making multiple jigs with multiple steps per jig.

I only wonder if your plainer or jointer ever clog your lines?thats why I bought a big 2hp dust collector but still have my bucket setup for sanding and clean up besides saw dust.my saw dust goes to a farmer.
@SlowandExpensive4 ай бұрын
I don't have a jointer but but when I use my planner I direct the chips directly into a can no extra dust collector involved but a 5hp shop vacuum is only going to work well with smaller tools. Even the largest shop vacuum is only going to pull about 160cfm and something like the tools you mention usually need around 400cfm (minimum) and 4" hoses for adequate collection. My largest dust creating tool is an 80" belt sander and I have it hooked to a conventional single horsepower dust collector.
