Hey everyone! Thanks so much for checking out the video! I want to give an update on this method. I tried recently with an Electro Harmonix Bad Stone V1 in the large metal casing, and using the plastic scraper, the metal ended up becoming scratched. On the other hand, I tried with numerous other color-coated and plastic cases and had no issues, so I am writing this comment to suggest other approaches in the case of a metal case like that of EHX's early 70s pedals. You can try, for example, with just a paper towel and the adhesive remover if you want to tackle the residue on a metal case. I'll be updating the title of this video per this finding. I also want to give a word of caution for those who try this approach. The spray used in this video is 'low oder' version. I tried a few times afterwards with the normal oder version and realized that both proper ventilation is necessary. Please be careful with this spray, and use gloves if possible! Take care, everyone!

However, I was able to find some being sold on eBay right now via the following URL: www.ebay.com/itm/282632108869 As of now, there appears to be 6 in stock. I hope this helps!

@@gaijean Hey bro, thanks a lot for your response. I’m from Peru, and the shipping cost would be really expensive for me. So, after watching your video, I took the pedal apart, removed the pot, and tried to clean it a bit to see if the problem would go away. But then, just as I was doing that, the power supply stopped working, so now I’m waiting to get another one or a 9V battery to test it out. Hopefully, that will be enough, but if not, I might have to buy a new one. Anyway, I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who had the same problem. Have you thought about what you’ll do with that pedal? I was looking into some mods that could improve it since it’s a pedal that leaves a lot to be desired compared to the original. I saw that by changing the switch and some resistors, you could get a good sound, but I never got around to trying those mods. So, if you make any modifications and record it, I’ll follow along to avoid messing anything up. HAHAHAHA

@@gaijean Another quick question, bro. Does a potentiometer in good condition have a stop? (Sorry if I’m not using the right terms, but I really don’t know much about these things and I’m trying to learn on my own.) What happened is that today I completely took the pedal apart, and as I mentioned, I tried to clean the pot as best as I could. While doing that, I noticed that it didn’t have a stop; it could just keep turning and turning in one direction. Is that normal, or is my pot already junk? Thanks, man!

@@SebastianGarcia-ee1fy You're very welcome! Oh nice, I've always wanted to visit Peru! So it's difficult to figure out what's going on from your comment, but just a few questions. Did you have the pedal attached to a power supply when you were trying to clean the pot, or did you disconnect it first, clean the pot, and connect the adapter? Second, have you tested your adapter to make sure you're still getting the proper voltage (assuming 9V) with a multimeter? Assuming your adapter is center positive, you can test your DC voltage by putting your multimeter in VDC mode and putting the red probe inside your 2.1mm DC male plug and the black probe on the outside portion. If that works and you're getting 9VDC, I'd recommend putting your multimeter in diode mode and test your diodes next. Regarding what I'll do with the pedal, I've listed it for sale immediately after this video. Indeed, there are probably some really cool mods that can be done to this pedal! So I won't be doing any modifications on this pedal, per se, but if you need help with the modification, just let me know what you're having trouble with and we can go from there!
@SebastianGarcia-ee1fy
@SebastianGarcia-ee1fy 6 күн бұрын
@@gaijean Thanks, bro. Regarding the pedal, I know the problem is with the power cable because I tested it with other pedals, and it definitely doesn’t provide power. So, I might try a 9V battery tomorrow to check how it goes, and if it still gives that scratchy sound, I’ll need to replace the pot. As for the mods, I was thinking of adding a 3PDT switch to make it true bypass and adding a volume pot, since that’s one of the main issues with this pedal. I’m really doing these modifications out of love for the pedal because it was one of my first ones. I’ve had it lying around for years, and now I want to bring it back to life. Thanks for responding to my messages. And yes, you should come visit Peru-there are so many beautiful landscapes. Take care, bro!

A bit late to the party, but I watched a nice Reverb video (ref: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4SwmmdtdqqhidE ) on the attack and decay right after taking this video and finally have a better understanding of it. Instead of a constant sine wave signal, it will be more helpful to test with my actual guitar hooked up. Will try to get that up when I can invest in a nice phone stand for taking videos!

Hi, J.D.! Thank you so much for your kind comment! If you need any help building it or have any questions, please let me know! I'm happy to provide whatever information I can. EHX did create their own version of the SONIC WAVE called THE SCREW UPPER. I recently posted a video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onmwqKV5q9SEi80 It appears that it was produced in limited quantities throughout Japan. The original cost was around 45000 Japanese Yen (source: blog.goo.ne.jp/span_21/e/1af5e2fda43f83df86e056d27b2cb2ae ). That source had the same first impression of THE SCREW UPPER as I did -- basically, it looks like a prototype, but it was indeed an authentic EHX product. Sadly, it didn't see the light outside of Japan and there's quite a lack of information on it. I plan to update the description if I come across any other information. Take care, J.D., and again, thank you so much!

Schematic available here: www.gaijean.com/effects/i-w-turner-inc/sonic-wave In this clone, I replaced the Delco DS-26 transistors with Hitachi 2SB155 transistors. I found that the GE-2 transistor is quite similar to the Delco DS-26, and through a rabbit hole, found that AC128 is also similar. If you search for AC128 replacements, you'll find several alternatives. For the diode, I use a 1N60 germanium diode, and for the trimmer capacitor, I use one in the range of 6-20pF. Cost-wise, I think this build was around $25~30.

Hello everyone! In an attempt to get this posted as quickly as possible for you all, I noticed a tiny mistake in the schematic (flipped battery symbol) directly after uploading. To reflect the scenario in which such mistakes can be found and immediately corrected, opposed to directly integrating the schematic into my video, for the time being, I've decided to make the schematic available at: www.gaijean.com/effects/i-w-turner-inc/sonic-wave This way, the schematic can easily be updated, guaranteeing each of you see the latest, most accurate version. As I mentioned in the video, this is my first attempt at making a schematic as a means to keep the history of this iconic module alive for you all. I kindly ask for your understanding of that, and sincerely apologize that I have to direct you outside of KZbin in order to see the schematic.

Seems to be a missing link somewhere - where do the transistors get their base current from?
@gaijean
@gaijean 5 ай бұрын
Hi Mike! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! The Delco DS-26 transistor is a germanium PNP transistor. If my basic, limited understanding of PNP transistors is correct, current flows in through the Emitter, and current flows away for the Base (and Collector). As indicated on the schematic, the positive terminal of the 9V is connected directly into the Emitter of both transistors.This is opposite to the Electronic Music Lab (EML) Theremin which uses NPN transistors. For that circuit, the negative terminal of the 9V is connected directly to the Emitter, with the positive terminal connected to ground -- in the case of the SONIC WAVE, the negative terminal of the 9V is connected to ground using a 330Ω resistor. To be sure there is not a mistake in the schematic, I've double checked the circuit for both the SONIC WAVE and also the EML Theremin, and, as indicated in the schematic, the Base of both transistors connects directly to the .001uF and 1M resistor, which then connects to the respective pin in the IFT coil. Ultimately, the respective coil is then connected to ground. As this is my first schematic ever, if I am missing some fundamental element to represent the above scenario, please let me know! The schematic can be found here: www.gaijean.com/effects/i-w-turner-inc/sonic-wave

Hey there, thank you so much for taking the time to comment! The diode swapped out in this video is not the infamous 'magic diode', but rather a diode to protect the circuit in the event an incorrect power source (e.g., 18V) is plugged in! The magic diodes are under the goop -- since this video, I've posted another video where I completely extract the epoxy from the board: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4CvfIaNlNFggKMsi=aUtxtxH3iTx7EFIY I took some detailed pictures during the process which you can find at: decibelics.com/klon-guide/ (scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see the degooped pictures). You can see the two magic diodes! Oh wow, you bought the same Roger Mayer fuzz I sold a while back? By any chance, was it the spray painted unit?? I've never heard of the Supervibe before and just did a quick search on it! Congrats on owning one, that's awesome! Your setup sounds absolutely amazing! So happy to hear that fuzz found a great home! Never quite understood why it was spray painted, but regardless, it sounds great! Honestly, I just do this as a side hobby at the moment! Several years back, I had a friend that was an electrical engineer help me get started with the basic electrical components when I wanted to both fix and understand guitar pedals. What really fostered everything was reviving an old tube amplifier, where I forced myself to learn how to read schematics. I'd recommend if you want to go down the same path to first learn the basics of the components of some of the pedals your own -- ideally, your Roger Mayer Fuzz pedal, as it's a simple circuit! On that note, I find it amazing that you're a house builder and have said time and time over the past few years that I would love to learn that trade at some point, so, likewise, I definitely envy your trade! Sure, I'd love to check out some internal pictures of your Supervibe! You're very welcome! For future viewers who are curious about the same question, I'm going to post the synopsis here in the event the information changes over time or the URL expires: "Aside from the new switchable buffer/true-bypass feature, the circuit of the new unit is identical to that of the discontinued Centaur with one exception necessitated by the new feature: a 2-megohm resistor was added to prevent switching pop from the discharge part of an existing capacitor's charge/discharge cycle, and the value of the existing resistor that sets the input impedance of the circuit was increased from 1 megohm to 2 megohms. These two resistors, the new one and the existing one, are in parallel, resulting in an input impedance of 1 megohm, the same as that of the Centaur: the incoming signal "sees" exactly the same impedance it saw in the Centaur, and the resulting sound is exactly the same. The switchable buffer/true-bypass design, by the way, was the work of my friend Paul Cochrane of Tim/Timmy fame, who is one of the smartest and coolest people I know, so big thanks and tip-of-the-hat to Paul. The new unit will have the exact same NOS germanium diodes that I used throughout the fifteen years of Centaur production. You are crazy to plug that thing in before you replace the paper capacitors. You probably need a new output transformer on the speaker. It looks awful. If that tube is hot, it means that there is a capacitor that is defective. Probably one associated with the bias. you are going to destroy things before you repair it, if you don't do it correctly.

Thank you for watching and voicing your concern! You raise valid points useful for those working on amplifiers, and I appreciate your general concern. Indeed, visually, the capacitors, at least two of them, are extremely alarming. However, as I mention in the video, the internal components such as the capacitors were all tested prior to turning on the amplifier for the first time. As for the defective vacuum tube temperature, it was extremely hot after using a tube tester, not after the first initial run. This, coupled with giving a throbbing value of over 100 on the test, indicated that the tube was malfunctioning. After swapping it out with a fresh 5Y3GT, the amp has been running strong ever since uploading this video. Again, thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment!

@@gaijean Suggest you check out Mr.Carlson's Lab before you blow up amps. He has a lot of knowledge. Even though those capacitors tested ok, they are leaking voltage. Paper caps that old ALWAYS need to be changed to more modern ones, otherwise you risk destroying your power and/or speaker transformers. Good luck finding replacements for those.

If you attached this to any pedal that has a knob for "mids" you can sweep back and forth, you have essentially created a wah wah.

Wow, that's pretty slick. If you had 3 of them with long cables you could do the Neil Young whizzer thing with a Tweed Deluxe.
