The RPM surprised me!

Suzuki GSX-R1000 sport bike motors typically make the best power at around 12,200 but have a factory RPM limiter set at 13,200-13,400.

The first two minutes of this video shows the variety of purpose built formula cars and sports racers that compete in the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association series. These cars are generally former road race vehicles that have been built or re-purposed for hillclimbing. The first car to leave the starting line is a former Tui Super Vee powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engine. It also has Formula 1 style DRS (Drag Reduction System) on both the front and rear wings. The green and white sports racer is a Stohr WF-1 with modified aero and powered by a turbocharged Suzuki GSX-R 1000 super bike engine. The black sports racer is a former DSR Cheetah. The Cheetah is powered by a 3 cylinder snowmobile racing engine. The video is aboard a Stohr F-1000 formula car. This car is powered by a stock Suzuki GSX-R 1000 bike engine. All of these vehicles have a very good power to weight ratio and run the 2.25-mile Duryea course in well under two minutes from a standing start.

How much power can you realistically put through these with out vaporizing the transmission, or blowing the engine?
@davecutchins77233 жыл бұрын
This car has a stock fuel injected generation II 6-port RX-8 engine making 225 HP and 164ft.lbs. of torque through a 5-speed Hewland transaxle. The rotary will spin to 10k and the transaxle is good up to 250Hp.

@@davecutchins7723 thanks I've been looking at different formula cars for hill climbing so far these look like the best option. Have a good day.

@@davecutchins7723 How much modification are you permitted to make to the suspension from the stock setup? I drove F-Mazdas in the SCCA and they tended to understeer badly, which would be deadly on a hillclimb.
@davecutchins77233 жыл бұрын
@@epistte I never had excessive understeer with this car. Wing angles, wickers and anti-roll bar settings along with extremely soft tire compounds probably helped The engine in this car is a stock 6-port Renesis Gen ll (the factory installed engine was a 4-port Renesis) which in itself makes it a non-stock car. Also, the factory gear sets are not optimal for hill climbs, so non stock ratios are needed depending on how long the straight sections of road are and top speed expected. With the engine and gearing change the car is not legal for SCCA FM or FX classing. it currently runs in Regional Class FS.

Thanks for posting Dave. I see there's not much chance of falling too far down the mountain there. You know unlike Pikes Peak. :)

Stan, my laptop's internal clock was wrong and I could not find the data log until yesterday. It showed top speed was 142 and at some point showed 9800 rpm. Must have been on one of them ragged shifts.You gotta love a rotary engine!
