These are so cool! How did you figure out the design?
@BrettiMusicalInstruments5 күн бұрын
@@andreafeelsfantastic thank you! And there are a lot of factors that go into the design. For example, the physical shape was inspired by my xun work, as I didn't want a typical boxy inline, and had originally toyed with the idea of a kind of xun/ocarina hybrid a while back. The mouthpiece was a significant development of trial and error, as well as taking inspiration from other instruments such as the recorder. Physical construction is a result of what I find works best for me and what tools and woods are available. Voicing was also a massive trial and error effort, and things like finger hole layout is based on experience with other ocarinas and what I personally prefer. So many, many prototypes and failed attempts to get to a final design! And there are still a few new ideas coming for new batches as well!

I like the sound and your playing. I am interested that there seems to be a ringing sound in addition to the melody notes.
@BrettiMusicalInstruments16 күн бұрын
Thank you! Actually that kind of overtone you hear seems to be a result of the very sharp and polished blowing edge coupled with the tight airstream needed to play. I also find that the very dense hardwoods also have more of a noticeable whistling type harmonic as well.

I haven't tried playing xun yet. They seem fun. I think I should make one soon.
@BrettiMusicalInstruments16 күн бұрын
@@MabInstruments out of all the end blown flutes I have tried (shakuhachi, danso, quena, etc) I definitely think xun are one of the more challenging ones, but they are a lot of fun when you get the technique and embrochure down!
@MabInstruments16 күн бұрын
@BrettiMusicalInstruments, I'm tempted to make something that I can cheat on by using Arabic ney embouchure with xun-type resonant chamber. The xun embouchure seems more like transverse flute, which I find very difficult.
@MabInstruments16 күн бұрын
@@BrettiMusicalInstruments, perhaps xun embouchure is more like panpipes.
@BrettiMusicalInstruments16 күн бұрын
@@MabInstruments I have a set of panpipes myself, I think the xun is definitely a bit more challenging on the high notes, and still requires a bit more focused embrochure.

Celtic melody played on an obscure chinese instrument by a New Yorker (i guess) What a time to be alive in history Wish the cover was longer Whats that decoration on your wall? Some sort of tie-dye?
@BrettiMusicalInstruments3 ай бұрын
@@Naito31 it's definitely an exciting time for sure to have such access to so much information and resources and be able to put it all together in unique ways! As far as I'm aware, I'm also the only one making high end custom wooden xun, as 99% percent out there are clay (and many seem to be more cheaper decorations than serious Instruments.) I'd like to do some longer covers, though I have been mainly just sharing short songs to demonstrate each xun I make. As for the decoration in the background, that is some suminagashi that I did, which is a Japanese marbling art form in which ink is floated on water and transferred to paper. That's only one of a couple hundred I've done, maybe it's time to try switching it up a bit!

@@BrettiMusicalInstruments I got it recommended to me on my home feed. Prior to this I've never seen or heard a Xun. The sound is so mesmerizing. I can feel a cold wind breeze just by hearing you play. What does a Mango Xun mean? Because of its shape like a mango or made from the mango seed? I hope to see you cover more songs with the Xun.
@BrettiMusicalInstruments3 ай бұрын
@@Naito31 awesome, that's cool to hear it got recommended! I'm glad you enjoy it, and it's nice to help get others exposed to new instruments like this! I only stumbled across it by chance myself and started dabbling with making them from wood, and became hooked on it. It's kind of a nice cross between the ocarina and shakuhachi (which I also enjoy as well.) This xun is actually made from figured mango wood, which was a custom commission for a musician/instrument collector, which ended up matching his mango guitarlele and native american style flute. Mango is a medium hardness wood with some very unique natural mottling and colors, and gives a nice warm tone. I'm also in the process of making a bass mango for my own personal collection.
