So, about the clubs Cruzeiro and Atlético from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (MG) the mascots were given during the 40s. One can easily overlook how the rivals mascots can be set in the Greek dichotomy of Intelect (Fox) vs Force (Rooster). Also, that is a preying fight there. I think you treated their part too fast, especially compared to the clubs of Rio and São Paulo, so here more info: 7:19 Cruzeiro was given the Fox (Raposa) as a mascot (and therefore its nickname) by the cartoonist because its president was at the time clever and cunning as a fox. Cruzeiro also has two nicknames, "Zêro", the way "Zeiro" sounds in Minas Gerais accent, and Cabuloso, that means something/someone that imposes fear and dread on people. In everyday life, Cruzeiro fans use Cruzeiro and Cabuloso to refer to the club, while Fox is the visual representation and "Zêro" is more lyrical, used in chants for example. 6:52 Alt-MG* has its nickname "rooster" (galo) given by the cartoonist in 1945 because its president at the time he had a very combative manner, like a fighting cock (cockfighting is not a completely legal practice in Brazil "the spirit of the club". One can for sure say that "Rooster" is the name most of its supporters use when they refer to their team in day to day talks but also visually/imagetically and lyrically (in chants).

Very cool video. Just so you know... Clube Atlético Mineiro was named Galo because of its fighting ability and determination. This reason led to comparisons with the cockfights that existed at the time. One of the most notable players in the history of Galo was called Zé do Monte and had the habit of always entering with the team mascot under his arm.

In Portuguese, the term "Timão" refers to the device used to steer a ship, which is known in English as "helm." The "timão" controls the rudder, and by adjusting it, the ship's course is changed. So, "Timão" is the Portuguese word for what is called the "helm" in English.

Coritiba is a big club here in the south of the country, but in recent years it has been oscillating between the first and second division. The team is known as "coxa" which means thigh, this is due to the fact that the club came from Germany, and there were many white people in the club and the fans of the rival team "athetico paranaese" were responsible for maliciously nicknamed the players, however the club embraced it as a nickname and is currently the biggest champion of Paraná with 39 titles , 2 series B and 1 series A (and also 2 runners-up in the Copa do Brasil) not to mention the club's great tradition, which has the largest fan base in the state of Paraná, and the Olympic-shaped stadium, unlike many other trendy arenas. Even though it is in the second division of the Brazilian championship, Coritiba will host Brazilian national team games because of the high level of the "Couto Pereira" stadium. Since 1909, bringing strength, determination and tradition even though it is currently an average team, but with a lot of history. 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬💚💚💚

@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS Some people end up getting confused, because the city is written with a "U" Curitiba, while the team, as it has been since 1909, has not changed the spelling and has continued to use the old name of the city with an "O" Coritiba.

It was a good presentation of the twelve greats, but I found the part that refers to GREMIO to be very short! The club that won the 1983 World Cup, three times the American Cup and that, among other stars, trained and launched Ronaldinho Gaúcho. One hundred and twenty-one years of history, always among the top teams in the rankings. All this, based in a medium-sized city far from the largest economic centers in Brazil.

Some more São Paulo nicknames for you: Soberano: translated to "Sovereign", after being the best team in Brazil for some time (around 2003 to 2008, maybe), the media and their own fans started to call the team like this. Jason: the iconic slasher terror character was an nickname for São Paulo for some time, when people thought São Paulo was not a threat anymore or dead, they usually bounced back, hence the nickname (Grêmio also has an nickname like this, but their fans call them "Imortal")

I can see by Gerrard face that you don´t care! If São Paulo played Premier League he would have won more then 10 times. There are only 3 Teams in England, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man. Unit. If Liverpool can´t win even the Premier League how could he think he would be the best of the World? To be the best of a country is easy, I want to see to win from the hole World. It´s not that you don´t care, is that you´re not able to win and is easier to disqualify then to recognize.
@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS3 ай бұрын
Players and fans want to win because it's a football match. Fans want their team to win every match. 3 out of the last 5 winners have been from the Premier League but fans and the pundits in England rarely talk about it. Lifting the trophy wasn't even shown on TV in the coverage. Saying Sao Paulo would win the Premier League 10 times is a big claim when they haven't come close to winning the Brasileirao for over 15 years. You're right that it's a difficult competition to win - mainly because you need to win the Champions League to qualify.
