SOME TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: WERE TWO EMULSIONS, (ONE ON EACH SIDE OF THE FILM) USED? WERE TINTED FILTERS USED IN SHOOTING AND OR PROJECTION? WERE THE CAMERAS HAND CRANKED? IF SO, THEN WHAT WAS / WERE THE CRITERIA FOR THE CRANKING RATE? COMPARABLE QUESTIONS APPLY IF THE CAMERAS WERE ELECTRICALLY POWERED. AND OR, GIVEN CONTEMPORARY (WHEN TRANSFERRED TO VIDEO) SERVO TECHNOLOGY WHY DID DIFFERENT SPEEDS RESULT IN THIS VERSION? IN WHAT FILM FORMAT ie. 35MM) WAS IT SHOT? HOW DID THE COLOR ACCURACY OF THIS STAGE OF TECHNICOLOR COMPARE WITH "KINEMACOLOR"? I ASSUME THAT THE EMULSION'S (EMULSIONS?) REQUIRED MUCH BRIGHTER LIGHT SOURCES THAN DID CONVENTIONAL MONOCHROME IN 1922. IF SO, THEN HOW DID THEY CONTEND WITH THAT FACTOR?

Friends kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2fVm3mrfb6NjaM... The Toll of the Sea, Anna May Wong Edward Boensnes 265 subscribers Madame Butterfly story set in China using early technicolor. Music composed and copyrighted by Edward Rolf Boensnes. The First Two-Color Hollywood Feature Despite its success and wide acceptance in Europe, Kinemacolor struggled to break into the US film industry. This was largely thanks to the Motion Picture Patent Company - an organization established by Thomas Edison to ensure control of the motion picture industry and force movie producers to only use the technology of MPCC members. Mediavine This created space for a new color system to become the favorite of Hollywood producers and directors - Technicolor. The Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation was formed in Boston in 1914 by Herbert Kalmus, Daniel Comstock, and W. Burton Wescott, who drew their inspiration for their company name from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where Kalmus and Comstock studied. Just like Kinemacolor, Technicolor was a two-color system, but instead of using alternating red and green filters, it used a prism inside the camera to split the incoming image into two streams filtered through both red and green lenses, which were then imprinted onto the black and white film strip simultaneously. The first Hollywood two-color movie was filmed in 1917 titled The Gulf Between. Unfortunately, the film was destroyed in a fire on March 25, 1961, with only small fragments of footage surviving. Luckily, the second Hollywood feature film shot in the two-color Technicolor system survived. You can watch it in full here: The Toll of the Sea, 1922 - The second Hollywood feature-length film shot in color. Mediavine I cannot vouch for the quality of the movie though, as it’s rated on 6.6/10 on IMDB - only 0.2 points higher than the 22-second, plotless, hand-colored clip of Annabelle Serpentine Dance. Good work IMDB. The Toll of the Sea, Anna May Wong youtube.com The Toll of the Sea, Anna May Wong Madame Butterfly story set in China using early technicolor. Music co

"THE JAZZ SINGER" WAS NOT THE FIRST TALKIE" IT WASN'T EVEN JOLSON'S FIRST SOUND FILM. IN 1926, (ONE YEAR BEFORE) JOLSON WAS FEATURED IN A TWO REEL 'SHORT'. ITS TITLE WAS "PLANTATION ACT REVUE". ITS PRESENTATION WAS PART OF A THEATRICALLY (COMMERCIALLY) PRODUCED BY WARNERS. OTHER STUDIOS SOON LICENSED (FROM WESTERN ELECTRIC) THE PROCESS, BUT COULD NOT USE "VITAPHONE" AS THEIR TRADEMARKS. THE AUDIO WAS ELECTRONICALLY (VIA MICROPHONES, AMP,LIFIERS, ETC. ON 33.33 RPM DISKS. THE DIAMETERS OF MOST WERE 16". SOME WERE 12". FOR SHOOTING, THE DISK RECORDING LATHES WERE ELECTROMAGNETICALLY INTERLOCKED TO THE CAMERAS. FOR PLAYBACK, THE TURNTABLES WERE MECHANICALLY LINKED TO THE PROJECTORS. MAINTAINING THE SYNCHRONIZATION WAS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PROJECTIONIST: PLACING THE PLAYBACK NEEDLE AT AN UNAMBIGUOUSLY MARKED "START" (ARROW) AND REPLACING MISSING & OR DAMAGED FRAMES OF FILM HAVING PREFERABLY BLACK EMULSION. AS FOR VITAPHONE BEING THE FIRST "TALKIE" PROCESS, RESEARCH "KINETOPHONE" (DEBUTED 1913) ---ACOUSTICALLY (NOT VIA MICROPHONES, BUT HORNS AND MECHANICAL AMPLIFIERS), LINKED TO ELECTRONICALLY POWERED (NOT HAND CRANKED) CAMERAS. AS WAS "VITAPHONE", PRECISE OPERATION BY THE OPERATORS WERE KEY TO PRECISE SYNCHRONIZATION. IN 1922 "PHONOFILM" COMMERCIALLY DEBUTED AT THE CAPITOL THEATER IN NEW YORK CITY. BY 1929, 'WESTERN' ALSO HAD A VARIABLE AREA SOUND - ON - FILM 35MM PROCESS. AN ENTERTAINING ONE REEL EXPLANATION OF IT IS ENTITLED "FINDING HIS VOICE" THE ABOVE DOESN'T EVEN INCLUDE ANALOGOUS PROCESSES AND MARKETING IN EUROPE. SYSTEMS AND EUROPE. PATHE WAS HEAVILY INVOLVED. ONE EXAMPLE IS "FILM PARLANT" (SAME COMPANY? SPELLING CORRECT?) A HALF CENTURY HAS PASSED SINCE I LAST SAT IN FRENCH CLASSES @ QUEENS COLLEGE, CUNY. A FINAL CHALLENGE: FIND OUT WHY "RPM" AS APPLIED TO DISKS SUCH AS 33, 45 AND 78 IS NEITHER A SPEED NOR VELOCITY

Very good movie. She should have kept the child and lived happily ever after. The end was sad. Lotus Flower should not have laid with him out of wedlock. He should have been a much more decent man and much more responsible. This situation is a lot like the G. I.'s in WW1 with them doing the same thing with the women at the time of the war. Many children were born over there without the soldiers ever knowing. Some did know some did not

Consider it this way: what would you say if a blonde homecoming queen fell in love with a short Japanese business man? He treats her cruelly, then goes home for three years, during which time she prays to his picture and turns down marriage from a young Kennedy. Then, when she learns he has remarried, she kills herself. Now, I believe you would consider this girl to be a deranged idiot, correct? But because it’s an Oriental who kills herself for a Westerner-ah!-you find it beautiful.

11:43 very difficult to watch - it’s certainly of its time. If you consider the history of the anti-miscegenation laws in the US and the history of ‘yellowface’ in cinema, it’s quite real and disturbing. Anna May Wong’s being ‘different’ really limited her choice of roles and career - even missing out on the ‘Chinese’ lead role in ‘The Good Earth’ (1937). She was awesome ❤️

Mr.Boensnes, your music is sensational. I cried many times watching the unfortunate orphan in her plight, but your music accentuated the drama and the pathos. You are a very talented musician. Your critics are ignoramuses who would not know the difference between Bach and heavy metal.

So did Lotus just straight-up steal someone's kid? 😕 Also was kinda hoping Lotus and Elsie would ditch the guy and run off with each other. "The sympathy and understanding between good women the world over" indeed. 👩‍👩‍👦 Quite a gem from ages past. Deranged in a warm-hearted way. A bit of magic that won't be forgotten after all. 👍🏻 The music was surprisingly good too; sounds like something from a 90s RPG, and was nice to listen to rather than just being there to have something to put in the audio channels.

It’s a tragedy beautifully done, most likely reflecting the sentiments toward interracial at that time. However, as an asian woman, I do find the story a bit racist. A chinese Woman manipulated by an American man and shamed again when he returned to showcase his wife. Then she still forgave and gave the couple her son and killed herself. Then off the happy couple sailed Home. I actually don’t get why people don’t find it a bit racist. That said, the film has its artistic value.

I would expect any and all film from this era to depict any other race than white, in a racist way. That's an unfortunate byproduct of its time. Remember, this is an era that also created "The Birth of a Nation", a movie that was adapted from an extremely racist book by Dixon.

This movie is, if I remember right, based on the story in "Madame Butterfly", a turn-of-the century short story turned opera. Each incarnation of the story seemed to get more racist, giving the Asian protagonist less and less agency. And believe me, there were a lot of incarnations. This was a really popular story.
