I felt like the first game was much easier to follow as it went, because the chronology was obvious and the characters quickly became familiar. You weren't so much asking "What's happening in the continuity?" as you were asking "How will this all come together in the end?" and the big unanswered questions were subtle enough that you might not even think to ask them until the epilogue asks you to put it all together. You're watching people fight over possession of a powerful artifact and rise to power. In this one, seeing a familiar character usually means you've gone back in time, and the timeline is usually part of the puzzle. You don't even really see a thread of the ultimate plot until the final chapter, and even then, I doubt anyone will see the epilogue coming. The grand takeaway from each chapter is minor even in the broader story - the dance and apartment scenes were part of a chapter whose message was "They're using the device to move memories around." And to be honest, I STILL have no idea why Isaac's body got dumped where it did. The best theory I've got makes little sense. I'm hoping the DLC cases will flesh out the story further, but if it's anything like the first game, the connections will be pretty loose.

I think what made it easier to follow too was you were mostly following the idol around so it was a very clear continuity. Even when the characters changed they had some relation to the prior characters. I also didn’t pick up on any hints to suggest Jack wasn’t just following the corporation. DShmoo figured that one out and I’m not even sure how. It seemed like process of elimination at that point. I still enjoyed it but I almost feel I need a recap because the scope of it was so so broad and we met so many characters and factions along the way. I’d love to hear your theory on Novak’s body. I also expected to hear more about Bagman’s son but maybe just missed it. -JShmoo

@@ShmoosPlay Honestly, I blazed through most of the game in a day, but that final story segment utterly baffled me until I'd slept on it. And even then, none of my ideas panned out until I gave up and went to do something else. Then it suddenly hit me: Hunter Wolf is the alias. I was trying to figure out whose body he'd put himself in, and I was convinced it was Marie. There are definitely hints, and replaying the game helped a lot. When we first see Jack, he's assuring Elizabeth that Isaac's legacy will live on. The thing that didn't make sense to me about Isaac Nowak was that Jack dumped his body, red eyes and all, where it could easily be found, and then pressured his cousin Elizabeth to cover it up. But I think that was the point. With all the experiments he'd been doing on the homeless men, the red-eyed bodies were starting to pile up, and Detective Roy was working the case. We know he went looking for Hunter Wolf at least once. So I think Jack intentionally left Isaac's body to be found so that his daughter would be forced to use her money to make the case, and the related "Red Curse" case, disappear so he could escape notice. The Bagmans were incidental to the whole thing - anyone who'd found the body would have been bribed, and they just happened to have a convenient need for a generous benefactor that worked out well.

For what it's worth, my intuition on the true identity of Hunter Wolf was largely predicated on his relationship to Isaac and the eagerness to cover up his death. As the game went on, you can see Jack also has more altruistic ideas for what to do with I.D.O.L and that he wasn't directly involved with the conspiracy to undermine the O-Range campaign. He's the only one with enough access to the I.D.O.L., knowledge of how it works and motive to use it for something other than profit. He also was the one to discover how using the lenses together compounded the effect, something that it's unclear he shared with the others (we know Oriel ended up in an asylum but we don't know how his condition was explained to OPIG folks). I love the insight about using his aunt to facilitate a cover-up, but I think ultimately his motivation comes down to creating a plausible death scenario for his uncle to cover up the theft of his memories. - DShmoo

Incidentally the biggest plot hole for me is how he expected the millions of other Isaacs to view his apology message that he apparently recorded and replayed only for his own body to have access to. - DShmoo

Can’t wait for the last episode! The timeline was tricky, as another commenter said - there’s a lot of moving parts involved. I found the dwelling rankings to be overly vague as well. Even though I understood the criteria well enough, that “warm” meant “has protection from the cold outside air” and that a metal bar is more secure than a plank etc, it still felt more like guesswork than deduction. (I guess it helps coming from somewhat the same latitude as the developers when it comes to questions of winter cold.)

The timeline is certainly tricky, but it does need to be filled in with precisely the six names in Hunter Wolf's list of homeless people. The order of the shelters gives a relative ordering for the four men living in them, and Harry's journal mentions that Scrawny Marvin died and he got to move into his place. As for where Luke fits, he was there when Orion arrived, according to Orion's journal, but it's William who's going to move into Harry's place, so he's ahead of Luke.

You sorted out the models impressively fast. I didn’t think the profile pictures were accurate enough for identification, so I had to cross-reference heights, cigarettes, lipsticks and birthmarks until I found the only collection of three models that fit the bill - after several wrong guesses.

It was a lot of fun! I think the developers have a great start here. The character of Dan is unique and full of heart, plus it's great to see representation in games! The setting is perfect for a murder mystery, and the point-and-click interface works nicely.

Thank you so much for playing, and it's awesome to hear you enjoyed it! Like you guessed, this demo takes place at the *end* of Part 1 - the full game will have you finding all seven ingredients for the manuscript (the demo only mentions five, but the Kickstarter meant we could add two more!) - and that's just one of the five parts the full game will have. We do have double click to fast-walk (in addition to double-click on exits to teleport), but we're adding in a jog animation to make that a little faster and more obvious. There's also a 'jump to map' button if you hover over the cog at the top-right (along with a hotspot highlighter and goals/hints screen) - or you can just tap M on your keyboard :)

Thanks for posting this! I recently bought this game, but I’m thinking it might turn out to be too “puzzle-y” for me (vs. the typical PnC adventure games I play), so I’ll probably just watch this instead and play alongside you guys. I love that you play these games together-it’s a lot more interesting that way & makes me feel like I’m right there with you both as a part of the team. 😂 👍🏼

A great solve, as usual! As someone who has played through the DLC and seen several others play through it, I would say that you actually did really well! This DLC has a lot more happening in the background, away from the thinking panel, than the main game; so unless you make good notes or have an extremely detailed memory, you’ll often end up uncertain why you make the connections you make - even when they are actually based on something concrete in the level. Figuring out the stationery was a great catch, which a lot of people overlook. The stationery could have lead you to the fact that every character used different coloured ink, which is consistent throughout the three levels. The areas of the map of the third level that you felt you didn’t use are mostly all about narrowing down the identity of the spider. The alchemist is too heavy for the rope, the widower is afraid of heights (and has a meeting with the spider), the footprints eliminate the one-legged Ruben, and Cloudsley cannot read or write Lemurian. The first page of the comic more or less guarantees that the spider is Oberon, though, so they end up a bit superfluous. I think it is a very fair criticism of the third level that too many plot points are revealed through the limited word placement options on the thinking panel. Can’t wait to see the next DLC!

We certainly appreciate seeing the things we missed after a solve! I think there's a lot of great detail. Going back we certainly realized all the times we took the long way around. Like in the early one where the Pear brother gets poached, the knives were engraved and we didn't need to use the work schedule. Or in identifying Koch and Turner in the ascension ritual we were just way off and lucky the game's system was forgiving - Keene obviously left the footprints to bring back the idol to Lazarus and we were meant to identify the doctor by the seven seas company stamp. It's a testament to the game designers that there are so few cases where they've undermined themselves but yeah the whole escape route felt superfluous. Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe if you haven't!
