Have you ever used the MEC Slogg deluxe? Ive been trying to decide which one i want, this one or slogg
@mattbalcombe648 Жыл бұрын
yep, I've used the MEC as well. Its a good bag, but I find the material not quite as tough. I think the best bags I've used having tried 5 or 6 brands have been Sealline. They're as close to bombproof as you can get
@peterhrkal8165 Жыл бұрын
I would say you did a pretty decent job with the baiting. Check prevailing winds also of that area and make sure they are going to carry your bait scent into bear territory not into a highway and civilization. Also spray scents up high into trees I'm spray bottles.... vanilla etc... get the scents going high and wide.

Hey Matt, Followed over from Northern Scavengers and your epic adventure with them. Looked like you were carrying a Earthpak dry bag, how did it hold up and were you happy with its performance? Thanks and keep the great content coming!!
@mattbalcombe6482 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, thanks for following along! I've been highly impressed by that Earthpak. I bought it for moose guiding where it spends most of its time floating in a few inches of water at the bottom of an aluminum boat, it comes on almost all my weekend trips as well as the Cote Nord trip and is still in great shape. No leaks or broken straps. I think it goes for $60, or at least it did when I bought it and its served me very well

@@mattbalcombe648 yep I’ve got a 35/55/80 bags from Earthpak, I’ve only taken them on 1 BWCA trip and I liked them a lot. Really appreciate your opinion as you’ve put them through more abuse than I have. Keep up the great work!

Dude the world is calling me to do this I just spent the past 6 months learning about poling and trying to find one, it’s not popular here in Ontario I guess. I ended up buying a 2x6x14 and ripped it with a hand saw, just about to oil it and hoping to take it out this weekend! You’re a huge inspiration, great video.

What precautions do you take in walking up on your bait site? A couple of times doing early season scouting for whitetails I have walked up on some one's bear bait site, kind of creepy.
@mattbalcombe6482 жыл бұрын
I make sure to make lots of noise so they know I'm coming. The way my site is arranged I am quite close to the barrel by the time I can see it so I don't want to catch a bear by surprise. I also carry a can of bear spray as a precaution.

How big did you make portions and how much water to rehydrate? I wanted to try something like this for freezer bag cooking on longer backpacking trips
@mattbalcombe6482 жыл бұрын
Each portion when cooked is a bit more than a pound of food, about 1000 calories per serving. It’s a big meal but this was a test for the expedition we did this past summer. Far as water goes, I kind of go by feel. Generally enough to cover the food in the pot, continuing to keep it on the heat and simmer it while it’s rehydrating is key to getting all that water absorbed.

It was taken early July. If you get to the right spots I've found you can get cod fairly consistently throughout the year. The most important thing is to find structure on the bottom. Hope that helps!
