Is it dangerous *_before_* it grows ginormous? If so, it would be useful to tell us how to identify the small plants.

When I was little we found this hogweed in our forest while hiking with my father. He played with a non-toxic variety when he was young and didn’t know that the toxic kind was introduced to Ukraine. So I had his hand print burned on my forearm for quite some time 😅

Just get some of the small Dextet cattle... They eat them and gnaw this horrible plant down so far, that it can never grow back! No planticides, just hungry cttle!😀👍🔥

This is a joke video right? because I'm pretty sure the younger generation has zero common sense, they're probably making you tube video's of themselves jumping around and taking baths in that stuff .

I remember discovering this around where I grew up on a trail, and didn't realize it wasn't native and considered invasive. I watched them from a distance remove it, and they were dressed almost in full hazmat gear to get rid of it.

We have cow parsnip growing locally which is a near identical double for hogweed except it's smaller and isnt blotchy purple on the stem. It does contain lower concentrations of the same toxic compounds as hogweed though. The crazy part is that early in the season when the cow parsnips are still young, it is collected as an edible!

When i was 12 i had legs and arms full blisters because of it. Took almost 10 years before all scars were gone. It's painfull and dangerous. You can dehydrate rather fast. In Dutch it's called "reuze berenklauw" or "giant bear claw" translated.

I was once left with blisters on my arms that took months to heal properly. It was caused by native common hogweed. The sap reacted with sunlight in a similar way. I was using a strimmer whilst wearing a T-shirt on a summer day. Another guy I was with, was bare chested so was sprayed worse. Cover up when you're cutting and strimming.

Do not touch or ingest or inhale! I've heard that you need professional eradicators, because its sap can remain active for a long time in the surrounding area if not removed well. Pretty much need to use a throwaway hazmat suit for its eradication.

This may sound odd but the treatment my mom used when we came into contact with this kind of stuff and poison Ivy is to pour bleach on a rag, scrub the affected area, then immediately wash off the same area with soap and water. The bleach will breakdown and neutralize the oils from the plant.

It's a miracle, with the number of poisonous species of plants, and the amount of time I spent in the woods and fields as a kid, that I survived mostly unscathed. (poison ivy was the only bane of my early years)

A less well known fact is that Cow Parsnip/Common Hogweed, Heracleum sphodylium, has very much the same effect on skin and eyes as Giant Hogweed and is much more common in the UK. The symptoms are l bit less harsh, but the healing time is very long [months] and will often lead to permanent skin discoloration. I found this out the hard way... with a strimmer, shirt off, on a sunny day ! Please do not repeat my mistake
@BoltonNewt
@BoltonNewt Жыл бұрын
Cow Parsley and native hogweed are two seperate species of the same family. It was most likely native hogweed that brushed against you, I've also had it on my skin and it caused a bright red rash for a day, I was lucky that it was just the leaves that brushed against me and not the sap.

@@BoltonNewt That is the trouble with 'common names, they vary around the country' Cow Parsley' and 'Cow Parsnip' are very different plants though their names are often confused, hence the Latin name. I suspect your native hogweed is my cow parsnip. The results were pretty ghastly with blistered weeping sores for several months. Since that time, I have been trying to keep this plant in check [about 20 years now], and in that time it has become much more widespread in the countryside around, I suspect in large part to far less trimming of roadside verges. Luckily we are relatively free of Giant Hogweed round here, but there are a few local areas where it is a problem.

I still have a scar on my neck from 8 years ago from the skin bubbling. I almost died too, definitely inhaled some particles because my lungs were absolutely shredded. Being in the sun was like having a car lighter on my skin for weeks. It was all less than a bottlecap amount of sap too
