I have a 2013 ford fiesta and it’s really reliable has 113k for miles

We have a well cared for 2016 Fiesta 1.25 with 60k on it which knocks like crazy from cold and for the first mile. Have done 2 years of troubleshooting, tried different oils and friction reducing additives but nothing works. However engine is smooth and economical with no ,measurable oil consumption so piston slap must be the reason. Its been like it now for 30K+ miles. This engine doesnt have hydraulic tappets and I suspect most of the other variants of this engine do not...

Cylinders has a slight oval aging. It's totally normal when it's used. Mine has 300k km in it, same noise. One of the Ford Garage lead technician said: "- Don't care about it. It's noisy when cold, disaapering when warming up, it will run smooth further 200k km with this", he said.

Ebben nincs ilyen ez nem dízel. Ebbe a dugatyúknak van ilyen kopogó hangja de csak hidegen csinálja. Alu henger és alu dugatyú és egy kis illesztési hézag miatt tud kicsit a dugattyú mozogni ami magasabb alapjárati fordulaton hallható. Ezzel is elmehet 300ezret vígan.

I took sump of mine and had a look also changed the conros bearings while I was at it. It turns out it is side to side play in the conrod connecting bearings. Most normal engines have no play at all side to side however, these engines do and there is nothing you cam do about it. The bearing caps look like they are supposed to handle the gaping on this side to side motion. Furthermore no one knows what the tolerances are for this nor how to correct it ford just supplies a shortblock making it too expensive to fix. The conrod bearing caps have a wide machined face larger the the conrod width which handles the side to side rod motion. That's what the knocking is

This is the ti engine. It does not have intake flaps however the noise echos through the engine so it is hard to find. There is several noises here first is the fast ticking which are injectors then you have the flapping sound, the smooth flipper kind of noise, this is a combination of cam belt, vct noise and the cams sliding over the valve caps. Then you have that knocking which is annoying on all the ti series engines and I believe it is conrod piston related due to the way the timing works on this engine. The fuel trims flick from rich to lean every second or so and the sensors manage cylinder 1 and 4 separately from 2 and 3 so you have 2 oxygen sensors for 1 and 4 bank 1 then another 2 sensors for 2 and 3 Bank 2 much as if it was a v8 but it is a straight 4 split into 2 banks. When the timing lags and it does the banks 1 and 2 cause this noise which quietens down as it goes into closed loop but any variation in timing data to the PCM will throw this all off and make even more strange noises and engine behaviour. Most missed part to test on this engine I the crankshaft sensor, it is a 2 wire magnetic type and can output allot of noise to the PCM making it hard for the computer to adjust timing correctly. Worst yet sensors runs on the flywheel on clutch housing 3 inches from the radiator so it is constantly blasted with hot air from it. Yes it is plastic housed oh the best combination heat, plastic, magnetic and thin wires exposed to all the elements coming through the radiator.

Hello, I'm having a similar problem. I replaced the eccentric pulleys and solenoids. But I couldn't get rid of this sound. It is very loud when cold, but after 2 minutes the sound decreases but continues. It comes out softer. The car is running very well, there are no problems, but this noise at first start-up bothers me a lot. What exactly would you recommend to get rid of this noise? Thank you

By the way I forgot to add. When I temporarily remove the intake manifold hoses, the sound stops.

It's the type of piston used they use a hyoereutectic piston alloy and if the engine was reved high when cold it expands to fast before the cylinder heats up and tares the piston skirt up. It makes this noise until you get up to temp and then meet about 2500rpm to maintain that heat for the piston and rings to expand to the perfect seal. Don't rag a cold engine is the key as it tares out the piston to wall clerence. 1:40

Tappets. Have the same "issue" on my old Fiesta mk4 1.3 endura. I bought a set of gap tweezers and checkers and fixed it a bit.

I have a hard time hearing it. Is it the knocking sound like "takatakataka" or is that normal? Or is it the low and subtle humming/whirring?

@@fdu6 takatakataka should be as quiet as possible. I think that 50 000km is the tappet check interval, by the books (fiesta)

A hagyományos chiptuning műhelyek nem foglalkoznak hideg-meleg alapjárat optimalizálással. Gazdaságilag nem üzlet.

@@felattila Nem tudom ennél a motornál van-e az "örvénycsappantyú" vagy mi a fene a neve vagy csak a nagyobbaknál. Azok a kis vákuummal vezérelt műanyag terelőlapocskák. Egyre több külföldi helyen olvasom, hogy ezeknek az a baja. Minden szerviz azt mondja, hogy lóg a dugattyú szoknya, de ez valahogy sehogy sem akar műszakilag összeállni a fejemben. Főleg úgy, hogy 1 csepp olajfogyasztás sincs és benzinnel sem hígul észrevehető mértékben. De ez a dízelhang egy benzinestől nagyon durva.

@@legyes Nincs örvénylap, viszont van Ti-VCT vezérlés (sigma motor) ezt is cserélni kell bizonyos futásteljesítmény után.

Enyémnek is ilyen hangja van, meg az összes ti-vct-nek amit néztem youtube-on. Nem lehet, hogy ez az olaj adagoló szelepek hangja ami az okoskerékbe nyomja az olajat? Mivel ha megnézed a ford tech talk viceóját a ti-vct-ről, ott van, hogy tesztelik külön, hogy működik-e a szelep és elég hangosan kattan működés közben.

Hi we had a 2007 mk4 Ford mondeo with this exact same 1.6TI-vct engine,it had the very same noise and it's not worn rockers/tappets or piston slap or anything of that nature, belive it or not it was the intake manifold swirl flaps,that have worn and come a little loose and is causing this rattle,, we acually tought it was the VCT pullys on the cams that's was rattling,but it wasent,and the funny thing a mechanic told us it was them and we got them replaced with new timing belt kit all for OEM PARTS! and still the same only to find out that someone told us it was swirl flaps in the intake manifold, hope this helps,,

This engine has no swirl flaps. Only the 1.8 and 2.0

Strange becouse ours was 1.6 aswell same exact motor, there is something in that manifold! that makes that noise,we acually drilled a small hole in the manifold to see if it would make any difference and it did, the noise went away,so we replaced the manifold and it was running smooth and quiet,

That's interesting. I have the same issue on my 1.6 tivct fiesta. One garage says it's tappets, another says it's piston slap. Mine does it mostly at cold idle but would stop as long as I put load on the engine when driving. It would then do it again if I stopped or also on overrun when slowing down. Also it would be quiet once warm but would come back again briefly if I stopped for a short while i.e. petrol fill up. Can you confirm if yours made this noise in the same circumstances. Many thanks.

@@cavman543 Same here on my 2009 focus mk2.5 noisy when cold and especially when the engine is under no load like changing gears its really irritating but as soon as it warms up it goes away mostly it can be heard but very lightly. The engine runs really lovely though with lots of power so I don't think this is a problem, it might get fixed with a valve adjustment but there's no need to open the engine for this.

Nekem is volt ilyenem, ugyanezzel a hideghanggal; mindegyik ilyen. Jól ment, nem evett olajat. Ha menet közben levettem a gázról a lábam, akkor is ezt hallottam, terhelésen viszont nem. Cseréltem VCT kerekeket, hiába. Valakitől azt hallottam, hogy a dugattyúk hangja ez, de szerintem egyáltalán nem biztos.

Jó az észrevételed! Az enyémnek is ilyen hangja van. Szerintem gyújtásvezérlő programhiba. Túl nagy előgyújtást állít be az ECU. Lehet a CHIPTUNING megoldaná a problémát.

Normal sound !!it's cold start ..the sound is strong because of the hydraulic lifters when the oil and the engine come in the opereting temperature..it's Normal!!

@@mariosdolas6907 These do not have hydraulic lifters. It is just a flat tappet between the cam lobe and valve spring. Using the wrong weight of oil can do weird things with these.

@@giwrgostzi1895 ειμακ μηχαβικος αυτοκηνητων μεχρι τωρα δεβ εχω καταφερει να το σταματησω θα κανω μια τελευταια προσπαθεια με καθαριστικο γιω ωστιρια αλλα αυτι που βρηκα στην πορεια ειναι οτι χτυπσει και ο μεταβλητος και κανει σαν diesel στο ρελαντι
