I was there in 1989-1991, also learned Ada, thanks and best wishes to Brian Rudling. 2:59 - Frank Bott. 3:33 - I know the tutor's face, can you name him? 6:06 - Nigel Hardy. I did the robotics course, sadly, we never saw the robot arm move. 7:00 - Dave Price. 9:40 - I know the face, but don't remember his name. 11:30 - I can't remember the name of the person at the terminal. Where's Mike Tedd? Piercarlo Grandi? Good days! Thanks, Richard, for prompting some memories.

Interesting video. Is the eventual aim to reach Machynlleth?
@markhardy7833

Perhaps if the river was dredged properly, as in the old days.
@RichardShipman
@RichardShipman 10 ай бұрын
Dredging is usually done to allow navigation, and as far as I know, navigation only reached as far as Gladyfi/Derwenlas on the river Dyfi, and that ceased in about 1863 when the Cambrian railway came to Machynlleth. Not sure what evidence you have for dredging in this river valley.

While the new bridge / flyover is needed, we must also look at softer (and far cheaper) solutions to slow the flow and hold more water on the land, especially as more extreme rainfall and drought become more regular events. This has to include more trees in catchment areas, and beavers on our rivers.

What an eyesore in the middle of beautiful countryside!
@RichardShipman
@RichardShipman Жыл бұрын
For those of us that live here, being able to get to the other side of the valley when the road gets closed on a regular basis, it's worth the small sacrifice. And the site will be a lot less messy when the construction is closed down. If the road is closed, then emergency vehicles can't get through and the alternative route is 15-20 minutes longer. Hopefully this will actually save lives.

Is there a plan to deal with flooding where the road goes under the railway? All very well having a nice causeway to keep out of the floods if you can't drive through the low point under the railway.
@RichardShipman
@RichardShipman Жыл бұрын
As mentioned in the commentary,there is a bund constructed and a pumping scheme going in to keep the road under the bridge clear.

What the actual ......?????? A high speed, mega expensive raised road, heading smack into the middle of a little town? Why not have a slip road off it, but give the town a bypass???
@RichardShipman
@RichardShipman Жыл бұрын
Because the old bridge used to get hit by HGVs on a regular basis, and the road to it gets closed by flooding pretty regularly too. It enables the traffic to keep flowing. The town didn't want a bypass, as that tends to kill stopping traffic in small towns.

So the old bridge stays on .... downgraded to pedestrian and psychopath only. You've gotta love CC subtitles! 😂 I've been wondering about reinstating Platform 13 too. TBH, that Ind Est looks a bigger obstacle than the new bridge. Is there any passive provision for the Corris alongside the new road, north of the Dyfi?

That seems to have killed off any chance of reopening the Corris Railway back to Mac. Another shining testament to progress.
@RichardShipman
@RichardShipman Жыл бұрын
Not at all, but it will be a number of decades before getting back to Mach, unless someone comes up with several million pounds. There's 7km still to get to here, with public road crossings and lots of other things in the way.

I am still questioning of why did the Corris Railway built the same engine that looks like Edward Thomas. To be honest, this is also my favorite loco
@RichardShipman
@RichardShipman 2 жыл бұрын
Corris Railway No.4 (Edward Thomas) was used as the design for No 7, as the drawings were in existence for this loco, it was more powerful and judged to be easier to build than a loco built on the design of Corris 1,2 or 3. No 10, which we are building at the moment, is based on the design of Number 3, but one of the first things that we had to do was produce drawings to be able to build from. I hope that this explains the choice that was made at the time.

Hi David, things have been rather busy here, and my day job has rather taken over, plus the fact that we'e been in lockdown for a couple of weeks here in Wales. I hope that we will have a bit of nice weather over the next couple of weekends, and I can get out and make a roundup video showing where we got to. In the meantime, David has done a nice video on the deviation project which I have just uploaded to the official channel.

I spent about four family holidays in the caravan site on the opposite bank of the river just over fifty years ago before the road improvement and was always fascinated by the abandoned trackbed, last time I visited was about 35 years ago when there was just a museum and the plans to reopen the railway seemed a long way off. I now live in France but will have to consider a visit when this COVID crisis dies down.
