Excellent, excellent, excellent breakdown of the mythical component known as TRIAC. I have a notoriously evil power switch (ALPS disc wafer rotary DP?T w/ the speaker selaction tied into it). And the TRIAC is a blessing as it saves time, money and countless hours obsolete part tracking. Relays are an alternative but it would seem the TRIAC is the simpler of the two methods. I have yet to hear a benefit of the relay over the TRIAC when it comes to my specific matter. Thanks FixIt. Great content spoken like a regular guy instead of the nerds up in here that make me feel dumb.

I'm really hoping I didn't mess up. I looked which wire was on which and marked s for silver and b for brass. Then hearing two videos.. mine is opposite. I got my lamp at a garage sale years ago. Very antique. It's working. What would happen if the wires were mixed incorrectly? Would it still light?

QUESTION: I dropped a lamp I like very much from the 1990s that is touch sensitive with three levels of brightness. Originally, the bulb would screw in 100% of the way until it stopped and was very firm. The bulb did not wiggle or wobble at all after being screwed in. However, after being dropped, the bulb screws in about 99% of the way and "almost" feels firm. However, the bulb never screws in 100% of the way now. The bulb will always continue to rotate. Once this point of 99% has been reached, the bulb wiggles and wobbles back and form. The bulb does still work, and the lamp still turns on and off with three different levels of brightness. But, I'm concerned there would be a potential electrical problem or fire problem if the lamp has a wiggly bulb plugged in like that. What are your thoughts? Is this lamp safe to use in such a way? And also is this something that can be repaired? It looks like there are places online far from my home that repair lamps. But, touch sensitive lamps like this have not been common for a long time. Any help would be appreciated.

In the UK .. a VERY simple way to test your EHT 1μF capacitor ... is to put it in series with a 25 Watt , 230 Volt ( old skool ) Tungsten filament light bulb , apply mains ! ... an orange glow ( similar to a 1940's tube [ valve ] radio ) , should indicate a working capacitor ... BTW .. this setup makes an excellent night light ( try it out ! ) .............. DAVE™🛑

Some EHT diodes need slightly more than 9 Volts to conduct .... easy ! .... just clip together two batteries to make 18 Volts available ... this will test all microwave oven diodes available .... DAVE™🛑

Definitely extremely stupid wiring and if truth to be known I bet some of the wiring is too be available to sale more as the content power drown should be as a like battery sleep mode after so long of not used and the resistor should have heat sink to cool as in operation but you did a fine job I did the same first one hehehe and I bet many other people has done the same

I used my Wavetek DM27XT once I found out that my new Kaiweets HT118E only has 2 AA which is only 3VDC and not enough to get through a high voltage diode, but my Wavetek DM27XT has a 9VDC battery inside! Then I put the DM27XT in resistance modes high enough like 200Mohm or higher and I got over 200Mohm one way and 48Mohm the other way as a diode should.

I reset the bios and ram a bunch, 15 sec power cycled the laptop a bunch fn key to check brightness and it randomly came back on

My lamp has a plastic socket base which I am unable to remove to switch out socket. What do you suggest for removal of socket base?

Thank you for your video! I found two beautiful lamps in the trash and they didn't work. Bought sockets, watched this video as I went, made some mistakes, and a few hours later, they both work! I will say my lamps wires were in a plastic base thing and you need to use a paperclip to dislodge the wire. My bases didn't pop off. They are not perfect but I am proud of myself.

Yeah the video cuts out with the screwdriver being used to separate the socket from socket shell which is where I'm stuck. Mine is in so tight I'm afraid the metal will bend or break from prying
