Best coaster in the UK, always hit it at least twice on every visit to Alton Towers. It's called the Smiler for good reason!

I remember going on this a few times when it first opened, the best time was during Halloween, it was late and when we reached the top we could see all the stars in the night sky 🌌 definitely visit at night if you can because it’s a whole new experience

Is the smiler actually bad like extreme cause this video makes it seem like nothing
@Celatra
@Celatra 8 ай бұрын
of course it isn't extreme. but it can make you dizzy since it has 14 inversions. that and it can have that gertslauer jank to it at times

The fact that you can actually hear people laughing is kinda concerning
@Celatra
@Celatra 8 ай бұрын
it's not. it's because of the constant gforce changes. riders experience quite heavy positives both when going up and down the inversions, and at the top of each inversions they also experience some airtime. the constant g force changes is what causes the laughing. this ride is designed to force people to smile with its rapid force changes

Love to get over my fear of roller coasters. I got a weak stomach and the drops just give me awful anxiety but this is one I'd like to force myself to go on as it looks hella fun and it is more spinning than massive drops.

I used to be the same up until two years ago I forced myself to get on a coaster again as an adult not going to lie i was TERRIFIED! I am the same, the drip feeling gives me major anxiety however I can say now I have ridden every single coaster at Alton towers and overcome my fears. I’ve learnt it’s the build up rather than the ride that is the most scary and anxiety ridden! I now look at it as hey I’m strapped in now, I can’t be that person that says wait take me off and have to stop the train! So once I’m buckled in I just think to myself to go with it whatever happens. Turns out they aren’t nearly as scary as I kept remembering them and actually I now LOVE quite a lot of the coasters I’ve been on! I did have to work my way up to it though so first visit I did wickerman was ok then went on nemesis which in hindsight was maybe a bad idea as it’s very intense for a second coaster! That one gave me a panic attack and ruined my day so I ended it there on that trip. Second trip I did wickerman first again as I already knew that one so way less anxiety when you already know what it’s going to be like! Then I went on galactice which I absolutely loved because I felt like a bird flying! Then I tried Rita and yes I was nervous but ended up loving it! Then thirteen which the first drop scared me I looked down and went OH FFFF haha but I survived and actually didn’t hate it! I couldn’t quite bring myself for smoker or oblivion that trip though. Third trip I did all the same as last time again then absolutely had a freak out watching the smiler and thought no way could I do that but I studied it for 15 mins and went you know what, just get on and do it! So I was a ball of nerves walking through the queue, sat in my seat regretting my life choices but went with it and you know what it wasn’t even THAT BAD!!! Smiler is mostly loops and twists hardly any drop feeling at all so actually I now LOVE this one! I wasn’t brave enough for oblivion that trip though. So oblivion was the big one for me as it was all about the drop and THAT is what I hate about coasters. Yesterday however, I actually got in and sat down and went with it! I find the trick is get it done first so you don’t keep panicking, keep your eyes open, get a fast pass so you don’t have to watch it go past you 500 times and make you more anxious! Either way, as a previous roller coaster scaredy cat, I have now been converted and tried them all at my local TP! It feels like such an accomplishment def start small and build yourself up you can get there if you want it!!

In case the incident has tainted your view of this ride, I'd like to tell you the operators ignored the warning to stop the train (cart/car/carriage.) The crash was their fault, and everyone on the ride suffered minor injuries. The ride does not kill people and it never has.

A graze or bruise is a minor injury, not amputation. Two children in the front row had to be amputated, including a ballet dancer.
