Gene were Gene ,a brilliant indie band....The Smiths were a great band who had Morrisey as their lead singer but imo the band were bigger than the lead singer... But Gene were the sum of all their parts...thats what made them so good

I know that Longpigs were signed to U2's now defunct Mother label. Do i detect the backing vocals of a certain Mr Paul Heaton?

Oh man, the lead singer is the image of a guy I dated when I was 18. He used me and dumped me! Love this song though.

This is absolutely live and a white knuckle ride at the front of the rollercoaster. The lift at around 2 mins does me in and then his voice and then them all the way to the end is ferocious - this is the nuts.

Where they really compared to The Smiths? I've only heard this of theirs but it sounds nothing like The Smiths, the guitar overdrive, there's no Marr-like riff... The only thing that's like them its his voice, which sound incredibly alike yo Morrissey's. If anything they sound way more like Morrissey's solo stuff than The Smiths.

A corker. The lyrics are brilliant - "you walk me down to the hall/You're cart-wheeling too fast/And it's making me fall/But my legs are the chains to the floor/Now that you've stopped me dancing". They outshone everyone on that show

Phil and Beard. Twin lead guitars are reminscent of The Rolling Stones and The Smashing Pumpkins. I wouldn't describe Marion as Britpop though.

I think they would have been more successful if they had good marketing & had worked with a stylist. Martin especially (but the band's look overall) doesn't reflect the songs. It's hard to reconcile that. I bought the CDs when they came out, but I didn't know what they looked like. If I had seen him in flannel with yuppie trousers in an ad on NME or something, I'd be unimpressed. Compare that to Brett Anderson, Jarvis Cocker, etc.. There's your answer.

Time has been very kind to this band like many have mentioned I still too listen to their two albums . The Smile is an incredible stadium anthem that never was, scrap that , Marion were the great stadium band that never was As years gone by you can see how at odds they were in regards to being termed “ britpop “ they different in ambition , scope etc To me they could have been part of the classic British band lineage would never equate them with Sleeper or echobelly I have soft spot for Menswear lol but their music was unashamedly of the moment frivolous where Marion had that depth Harding whether in a chippy or drinking a shandy is a rock star regardless of units shifted I don’t know if part of their legacy , narrative is that they squandered their talent burning fast and in a way has worked leaving it to those old records to do the talking . God I am forty and remember watching this at fifteen 😂says a lot that so many years later there are us on here still saying great tune

I don’t know everything about the Longpigs but after such a promising first album, I mean what a few great tracks like On And On, there were still moments of promise on Mobile Home.... but they seemed to self destruct and not be able to quite handle or mange taking the next step. Mobile Home itself almost summed their career up in that regard, promising opening but tailed off quickly....sad really 😰
