That's interesting about the effect on sleep during the summer months. I haven't thought about that, like you say it's something to get used to and find ways to blackout the room. I went skiing in Åre last year and it was strange to feel tired and ready for bed at 5pm because of it getting dark earlier than I was used to. Looking forward to hear more about your experience in sweden, your take on things is very insightful and thank you for taking the time to do so. In the uk, pretty much all our structural timber comes from sweden, over the last few years prices have really hiked up. Are building material quite affordable there? It crossed my mind from looking at the price of houses and how they are very affordable. Especially compared to the uk! Where £200k only gets you a 1 up 1 down, no parking or garden house now. Another thought, did you bring your power tools from the uk? If so with adapters for the chargers and mains tools have they all worked the same?

Hey, I'm currently living in the uk (south west) and have done my whole life. I've been in the building industry for 7 years now. My partner and I are planning to move to Sweden next year and as much as I am excited about our future there, I am anxious about how it is to work there. Would it be possible for you to do another simple video like cleaning your workshop, but shed some light on when you moved to Sweden, why you chose further north, (we have been looking around östersund area) how you found it starting work in sweden,the differences between uk and swedish carpentry/construction, getting around with the language. I'd really appreciate your insight as an English man, and a fellow english carpenter, and I think many others would also appriciate this and probably bring more light to your hopefully ever growing channel. I hope you see this and again, it would mean a lot to learn your experiences, thankyou.
@Workshop23Workshop2312 күн бұрын
Hi, Thanks for the comment and the interest. I will make that video and talk about my experience of moving and living here. It may be a couple of weeks before I get the time to do it. In the meantime: Moving here has been a great choice for me. I am familiar with the Ostersund area and I like it. The construction industry and Swedish culture in general is way less "lively" than English culture can be, by this I mean my experience on building sites in England was lots of friendly insults and abuse towards your fellow workers, here the atmosphere is more sensitive and polite. To be honest sometimes I miss the banter. One thing that I am still getting used to is that in Sweden being a carpenter is viewed as quite a prestigious job, way higher in societal terms than in England, again that's just my experience. Taxes are high. Healthcare is exceptional. Traffic is non existent outside of the main cities. I can't think to give advice on the right thing to do but my thinking when we were moving here was that if it didn't work out then we would just return to England and at least we would have tried. I will make that video soon, thanks for this interaction, it has been a pleasant thought process for me 🙏

I am only just coming across you, and looked at a few videos, but have you done voiceovers at all? Or little ones here and there to explain what is going on. Personally when i watch video on creative topics like this, a bit of vocal explaination really helps with viewer retention, since for me, I understand, but im mainly watching youtube videos while doing something else, so the little voice over things help me to continue understanding what is happening and allow me to look away every once in a while because otherwise, i dont really have time for youtube if i have to give it 100% attention. Just something im noticing, and know i should have done back when i thought it would be fun to make some videos.:)
@Workshop23Workshop23Ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. They are good points, I have been thinking it would be good to do some voice overs just as you suggested, I have been busy with site work lately so I kept on editing the videos and I didn't want to wait until I had the time to record the voiceover so I have been uploading without it so far. One thing I am stuck on, is should I make content that I think people will like or just do what I want to do ? anyway thanks again for the feedback and the comments 👍

@Workshop23Workshop23 that's awesome. And yes I know it's difficult, but you got this! And that's a tricky balance, but you don't want to burn yourself out by doing things you don't enjoy as much. Thanks. That is my hope. I have plans for some larger projects and builds as the channel grows. My ideal situation is that I can at some stage work on projects solely for the purpose of interest on this channel and I can move away from paid customer work because when I am doing a project for a customer it limits the amount of time and effort I can put into the filming and content. Thank you for the "well done" and the comment 👍🙏

Great video 👌 How did you pay for your first house and renovation it?
@Workshop23Workshop23Ай бұрын
Thanks 👍, I was very fortunate and had a family member with a successful business, they loaned me the deposit and I had been working an industrial job for a couple of years so was able to get a mortgage. I used credit cards to buy the material for the renovation, it was only a small renovation, mainly painting and sanding wooden floors that kind of stuff. Your question stirs up emotion in me because of how hard it is to get started and buy a property, without the help I got I honestly don’t know how I would have ever got started. Your question has made me think about making some content about my own journey of property development, it’s not the biggest success of all time but maybe there is a few things that might help other people to get into it. Thanks for the question 🙏👍

How did you go about learning construction carpentry and home renovation, what's the best way to get into it in your opinion?
@Workshop23Workshop23Ай бұрын
around the age of 19 I started working for a painting and decorating company, it was renovating rental properties for local councils. The work was kind of fast and rough but it was lots of hands on experience. After that I worked for a small local builder who was doing home extensions and loft conversions. I was earning low money as a labourer but I knew I wanted to learn the process of building so it was good exposure to that. Also at this time I watched every episode of property ladder and grand designs ! Those things combined just started to get into my mind so I could understand how buildings stitch together. The physical skills came a bit slower and I just progressed from labourer to plasterboarder, then I started to do some woodwork and so on. When I look back the early work I did was not great, maybe not even good, but it was good enough and I was motivated to get better so I just kept wanting to do the next job better than the last. My thoughts on how to get started would be try to work for a small local builder, take the low wage, that way there is no expectations on you and tell them that you have a lack of skills but you want to learn, most people (me included) like to give advice so they will probably be happy to tell you how to do things. The physical skills just take lots of repetition so try to be on site using tools, loading out bricks, cleaning up, it all counts. I think classroom training for building is very slow, it can be good but real site experience is the quickest way, in my opinion. Thank you for the question and good luck 👍

Thanks for the video! I have two questions: (1) Did you remove a piece of drywall and replace it with plywood, behind the upper cabinets? Is it a common practice to do it like that? (2) The plywood strip that the cabinets rest on, is it temporary and only used to make the installation easier?
@Workshop23Workshop23Ай бұрын
1: I did remove a piece of drywall and replace it with 15mm plywood, it is the first time I have done this, the reason was, I needed a good material to fix to for the wall cabinets and the budget did not allow for the whole wall to be removed and lined with plywood so this was a cheaper alternative. I am not sure if it is common but it worked out great so I plan to do this again in the future. 2: The plywood strip was only temporary to make the installation easier because I was working alone, this was the first time I had done this and it also worked well so I will be using this technique again. Thank you very much for the questions 👍🙏

I hoped that it would increase activity on this channel and also give some value to people who watched it. Thanks for the comment 👍

The kitchen was designed to cover the complete section so I was able to fix directly to the plywood. If any of the wall was going to be visible I would usually cover the wall with plasterboards. Thanks for the question, I hope to upload part 2 on this coming Saturday 👍

Won't there be a filler piece left of the top cabinet you replaced?
@Workshop23Workshop23Ай бұрын
There will be, I think I filmed that in the next episode of the install. Those thin filler pieces take lots of time for such small pieces but I think they are what take the kitchen fit to a higher standard if they are done well. Thanks for the comment 👍🙏

Does the drill have a level on it? I am curious how you keep the post plumb without pausing to put a level up to it every few rotations. Thank you.
@Workshop23Workshop232 ай бұрын
Yeah the drill machine has a bubble level built in, also by pre drilling the hole with the hammer drill it creates a guide for the screw, if you hit a stone it rocks it can send the screw off course, thanks for the question 👍
@yurihuta84872 ай бұрын
Can you reverse the ground screw if you hit a very large rock? Pull the ground screw out by reversing the motor? If so, do you have to place the diagonal pipe on the other side of a fixed anchor? Thank you for sharing these videos!
@Workshop23Workshop232 ай бұрын
No worries 👍, that’s correct you can switch into reverse and remove the screw, if it is tight in the ground you can do as you say and flip the diagonal pipe, I don’t know if it is in the video but once you have one screw in the ground you can then use the previous screw as your anchor for the diagonal brace, that worked pretty good
@yurihuta84872 ай бұрын
It looks like there is some flexibility in terms of alignment with other posts. Is the requirement only three screws on one side and then how many screws on the other side to secure the vertical post? Thank you for sharing these videos of your work.
@Workshop23Workshop232 ай бұрын
You are welcome for the videos 👍, thank you for the questions I think it helps with the channel growth🙏. There was some variation with the alignment I corrected this by moving the posts forward or back in the screw bracket. I used 3 screws on each side of the bracket, I do not know if there is an industry standard but this was what I agreed with the customer and it seems to be a good level of strength. Thanks again for the comments and questions 👍

@Workshop23Workshop232 ай бұрын
Thank you for the compliment and the enthusiasm👍. I actually don’t know the type of wood. It’s what the suppliers offer for outside work such as decking projects and fences, One thing with the wood is the posts are glued beams which means they are made up of separate pieces of wood that are glued together, this type of posts was preferable because it tends to stay straighter over time, thanks for the comment 🙏

@Workshop23Workshop232 ай бұрын
Thank you for your compliment on the channel. You are correct in your thoughts about being knocked out of plumb. Stones were not much of an issue in this particular ground but there were some tree roots that did exactly that. I found I could tackle this issue somewhat by doing a thorough job with the pilot drill. I imagine if you were to do this work regularly you would pick up some tricks and techniques that would improve the overall result.
