Thanks. However, how does a PARENT find a Merit Badge counselor?? My son has picked several merit badges he would like to work on and we cannot find a Counselor for any of them for him. The 2 responses we've received from the Troop is "we'll find him, someone." (been 4-5mos now) or "he can do that at camp." A) he wants to do it NOW not at camp. B. we aren't going to camp this year apparently. C Even if we were, if he completed the requirements at home he shouldn't have to spend his time at camp running around trying to find a merit badge counselor that will sign off..after the fact. Bit frustrating trying to help him along, and I don't want to be a burden to volunteers that are doing so much already that seem as stumped as I am.

To keep your unit's Scoutmaster or designated Assistant Scoutmaster involved, most councils make that list available only to them, either through Scoutbook or a council website. Please have your son contact their Scoutmaster to announce his intent and ask him or her for the list of counselors for the merit badges.

You can also contact your District Executive for assistance, but it would be even better to facilitate your Scout making that contact.

This is a common problem. Lists of merit badge counselors are often not up to date at the council level. Even if you were able to find an individual willing to be the MB counselor, this person would have to register with the BSA, take YPT, and register with Scoutbook. This makes it difficult for a scout to work on a merit badge that he is interested in. As a former scout master, this was the biggest challenge I faced. I am sorry that I couldn't be more helpful. Please volunteer to be a counselor in areas that you can help, especially if you are willing to jump through all the hoops.

@@brianbarney4435 Brian, when I have a counselor that is not part of Scoutbook but is registered and YPT I will use an electronic blue card. Some counselors just don't want to be involved in Scoutbook because they are not involved except for merit badges.

Thanks for all your thoughts. I think due to covid set backs my boys have kinda lost interest. Also the district offers an online merit badge session over a couple day in the summer. I barley even mentioned this to my boys as I wanted them outside as much as possible. Not sitting at a computer like they did all spring with remote schooling. When my son watched a couple of his friends collect their merit badges from this two day event I think he pretty much lost all faith i the system. One boy earned 13 merit badges. Another earned 10. I think the second boy only did the one day online program. I know folks were trying to be helpful and accommodating to the boys during the pandemic. But. Kinda destroyed the whole credibility of the merit badge system.

Great information! one suggestion would be to slow down when you are going through the screens so we can see what you are clicking on. Especially when you were going through the chrome extension. Are you going to do more of these? A good one would be on the Advancement process, updating Scoutbook, creating PO's, etc. Another one or could be included with the Advancement would be BOR's updating.

Thank you for the feedback! I am working on additional videos and hope to have a few done before the end on the school year.

This is so helpful. I have a Question - the Scoutmaster's Initial Signature on Scoutbook is not addressed. When/how does that happen? Thanks.

I am please to read that it has been helpful. That is a great question and I will be sure to include that information in future videos. Unfortunately I can't post screen captures here but maybe I can explain well enough. I'll give it a try... While watching the video, go to time stamp 2:12 right before I click on Invite Counselor, and pause the video. In the middle of the screen right before listing the Merit Badge Requirements there is "Initial Unit Leader Signature" and "Print Blue Cards". Any Registered Unit Leader can click on "No" next to "Initial Unit Leader Signature" and enter the date of the Scoutmaster signature that would normally be written on the Blue Card when initially handed to the Scout (another reason why it is helpful for the unit leaders to be using Scoutbook). A parent cannot enter this date unless they are a Unit Leader registered with that Scout's unit. If an unregistered parent tries to click on the "No" they will get a pop-up message quoting "Guide to Advancement" explaining how the process is supposed to work. I hope that helps.
