Really hard to say. Often it's better to go for some simple construction work gloves. Not a fan myself. But getting wool gloves from the military surplus and some simple leather gloves are a good option. Main reason is the chance to dry them easily by being able to take them apart. Pig leather is obviously pretty weak, but if you rip through more expensive leather too. Might as well go for cheaper but more.

I know it's an old video but I really am surpised. My trail break has never left my side in about 6 years of guiding. Of course I am working in different contexts. I have the non silicone version. It's been beat up, I have never had an issue of contents being cold. I feel like maybe in some very specific cases it might not work, but that is the same with any product. I find the cup to hold temperature well enough as even a fully insulated cup will get cold winter camping, I tend to drink smaller cups of fluid in general. I prefer this over the stanleys I have used in the past. I find the shape is perfect to get into backpack, side pockets and car cup holders. The 500ml version also can nestle with an MSR titan cup perfectly. Which is great so that I can have two cups for a friend and I. The amount of guides I have shared a cup of tea with is countless. Of course there are tons of issues with anything right. I don't like how you can't replace gaskets and Primus won't send you any. You need to replace the whole topper and shipping is crazy. I don't love the sippy cup top, it broke after 2 years use. I really wish there was an after market something to be able to clip a carabiner to this thermos. Especially when around camp or canoeing it's nice to have it secured. Due to it being tapered in some extreme situation like bailing while skiing I have found it to fly out. Kinda also with they had at least one straight edge on this so it would be less prone to rolling. I wish they were more available. I have tried new thermoses since and honestly I am now shopping for the 1l version to use while trapping, doing search& rescue and xc skiing

Hej man. Great input. Sounds like you're doing some cool stuff. Interesting to hear that they won't shit gaskets. Especially since it's easy to get replacement parts for the cookers. Where you at? Great video and production quality. I loved the frigid landscapes! ;) I noticed that my generic 1L stainless steel flask from a supermarket gets surprisingly quickly luke warm, especially after I start drinking from it. It is slightly warm to touch, so I suspected either poor quality or perhaps lost vacuum. Generic 0.5L is very functional and seems to hold better on average. Swell 0.75L narrow bottle keeps hot water for 24h and is my best one. It was a gift at a work place. I consider upgrading, but not sure about the sizes of Stanley bottles. I noticed 1L can be more expensive than 1.4L and 1.9L ones on popular marketplace, and the 1.9L is often the cheapest one of the three. I guess it is demand/supply thing. I will take the bigger one, for use in the workshop or car, I think. They are too heavy for hiking anyway. I have solar, so can boil water whenever I want, but it is handy to have some hot water. I am trying to learn how quickly they lose heat once the liquid is being used. It is an interesting phenomenon!

Hej Pavel. Thanks for the input. Yeah, its interesting. You could take a thin old sleeping pad or something similar to improve the insulation value of your smaller ones and see if it's enough. Especially for your hikes. Even for the shop. Cause then they can fall off the bench and they'll still be fine.

Interesting video, the idea of taking a dump in the vestibule (if you have two) was new to me 😁. I use the Nallo GT on winter trips and I disagree about wind resistance - a quality tunnel tent like the Nallo can easily take storm winds if you pitch it along the wind direction. The problem is if the wind turns and comes from the side, that's one advantage of dome tents. Regarding the extended vestibule (absid) I could never live without it. It allows me to dig a pit in the snow so you can sit (like in a chair) and cook food and do other stuff - fantastic if the weather is bad. Regarding no snowflaps, I follow Hilleberg's advice and dig the tent down a bit if it's windy.

Although I swap the light to Aclimas Woolnet. But if you want to increase the warmth of your sleeping bag, maybe check Sea to Summit Reactor inner liners. Always wanted to buy one. Otherwise in terms of pure heat to weight you might be better off with polarfleece sweatpants. And they will do that, since polyester doesn't breathe as well 😜

Hi Philipp, I've enjoyed watching and reading your contents a lot, thanks for sharing your lifestyle, as well as gear reviews. I'm curious whether you will normally wear waterproof socks in such weather and trail condition shown in this video? Never been to Europe, so I couldn't tell the temp you hiked through in this trip watching you went through fog, muds and snow with light clothes in the middle of summer😂. I wonder whether you still feel comfortable to have a day hike with the trail runner plus waterproof socks setup under a 5 degree C temperature and wet condition onto a partial gravel partial paved route with mild ups and downs? I am now living in Singapore, avg daytime temp here is over 30 deg C throughout a year, along with a pouring rain every other day during a rain season. I've tested it's ok to cycle into a heavy rain with a thin pair of non-waterproof socks, because the rain will stop in an hour most of the time and the sun will torch again to make my synthetic socks mild wet until I arrive home. However, I'm still interested to try thin waterproof socks on the bike in tropical weather for the preparation of a multi-day cycling trip in Malaysia :D
@philippbergau5868
@philippbergau5868 7 ай бұрын
Hej there, thanks for asking. Yeahhhh. Synthetic socks are no go. Always wool in the winter and wool mix on hikes. The thing is, waterproof socks don't hold up that well and if you're out on a run they will be soaked inside from your sweat. At least for me. BUT. Liner sock and hiking sock over, so you'll not have any shaving. Or, "fingersocks" actually started loving those. Stay well and no rubbing between the toes in wet conditions.

Yeah, simple cheap ones don't cut it. Depending on your foot size 8liter might cut it. But I believe those are 15l. Predictable is getting the whole foot in the bottom of the bag, but that's me.

I don't have any that new but have a small collection of vintage vacuum bottles from Thermos, Stanley, Uno-Vac going back to 1911 I think. Those old ones have fired porcelain linings. This was before stainless steel existed. The stoppers were corks. Almost all of them are still great at holding temperatures. Some have lost their vacuum and don't work. The old ones hold heat better, but the trade off is the neck is very small compared to the newer ones, so they are much harder to clean. The wide mouth food models, no matter the era just lose too much heat through the large stopper/lid/cap. So you'll only get about 4 hrs of soup in normal climates. In yours? It will certainly be worse. You can make them last longer by not letting them lay on their sides, and wrapping them up with other good insulating materials. To get the maximum out of them, you must fill them with boiling water and let them set for a few minutes prior to filling them with your hot contents. It makes a huge difference. If you can handle the size and weight, Stanley makes a thermal cooker that would allow you to cook multiple courses and keep them hot while cooking the next part of the meal. I have some Japanese Thermos brand "Cook and Carry" or "Shuttle Chef" thermal cookers that have an internal cooking pot the you use as normal on any stove, then when you get to a boil, you put it in the vacuum insulated carrier. As you mentioned, get the size you need, as any insulated vessel performs best when full.
@philippbergau5868
@philippbergau5868 9 ай бұрын
Thank you, Mike, for sharing. Couldn't agree more. I'll take a look at those Japanese options you're talking about. When you're out on a tour, certain methods are impractical, like preheating the bottle. You can get around it by filling them up in the evening and then refilling them in the morning with the same water, but boiled up. I often do that in the winter when melting snow since it's going a lot faster. Insulating the bottles, absolutely. Thin old sleeping mat, or yoga mat and some tape is all you need. I once wrapped a primus food flask in my sweater and that piece of plastic shit blew up. Needless to say that sweater was useless for my winter trip 😜

@@philippbergau5868 I understand that "filling" a bottle with boiling water isn't going to be workable in the field most times. But if you slosh around a few ounces a couple of times in stages, it will give you a remarkable performance increase. You can get really close to the same results. The same can be said for bathing. I tried to explain to my daughter that 30 minute showers were a waste of water and energy by explaining how, in the Army, I would perform daily field baths with about a half liter of water. Mind you we got pretty dirty too! Haha! Shocking as it may seem, she wasn't impressed........

The old canteen cup whore bath. I did 21 years in field artillery, MLRS. It's amazing how presentable you can make yourself with a half canteen of water, a little soap and a wash cloth. My trusty Coleman 550B sure made it more enjoyable and effective. Understand and agree with you on using a few ounces vs filling. Perfect world vs reality of field conditions. I used the same "stages" when rinsing off. Haha. A couple tablespoons in the palm a few times and your rinsed pretty well. Now, with hanging bags with valved hoses, it's a breeze when it warm. You can take a pretty good shower under a fast drip.... In winter, though, it's still the old fashioned way unless you like freezing your ass off.

The issue with storing hot food is probably 1) a different design of container, harder to insulate, larger volume (easy eating), and 2) the fact that food had less water than drinks and water has high thermal capacity.

As to the holes. I'm wearing Aclima, Devold and Woolpower. All fall apart. Whether they are woven tight, or lose. They all do. Sweaters usually hold up longer. But everything underneath has a shelf life of 2 years max, cause I wear them in small rotation every day working. Warmth. Well... as I said, the 600 doesn't do much, as it is heavy and doesn't trap air well. But 200 in particular works well. So I'd be curious to know what you would call a better product for warmth.

The issue with the "shitty attachment" of the pump is fairly normal. The gaskets around the pump connector dry out and wear out. You can replace/maintain them by opening the little screw and lifting up the silver locking tab. Then you can pull out the connector, and either re-grease the gasket with silicone grease or change it and grease it. It should recover its tightness. Just remember the screw is in plastic, so try to find the old thread before screwing it in, and "easy does it". On really early ergo-pumps (with black top and bottom), the locking tab was held by a pin behind the connector rather than a screw, and could not be dismantled. These older models had 2 gaskets and when they did wear, leaving your pump leaky. You can McGyver the repair, but it's not easy (best being to drill the pin out with a column drill and replace it with something removable. I made a clip from piano wire) As for the pump's leather cup, if you wipe (I use a baby wipe) and re-lube it regularly, you may almost never need to change it (my Omnifuel, while not seeing as regular use as yours, has the same one for 20 years now...) Finaly, your remark about lack of power when bottle nears empty: liquid fuel is nearly incompressible, while air is VERY compressible. That means that you need to pump in increasingly large amount of air when the fuel level reduce. It's not linear. Lack of power just means you did not build enough pressure in the bottle, so get pumping. Having to pump 50x, 70x or more in a nearly empty bottle is perfectly normal. :)
