I saw this movie in the theater when it came out . I was 11. I even have the 45rpm ! With John Saxon, Sal Mineo, and Rod McKuen and a very young Shelley Fabares.

I knew Terry Jacks version wasn’t original, but never knew Rod McKuen also did it.

One of my favorite musicians. An era of real creativity. Went to his concert at Durban city hall in 1978. Have never forgotten his rendition of " Ballard of the black eagle" RIP Rod

This is so powerful and emotional. I just read the Google translation of Jacques Brel lyrics and this adaptation of the translation is so good. And then the evolution of Kingston Trio to Terry Jacks life additions to the lyrics make all the versions so cool and important to note as a group, NOT comparing them separately as which is better! The best part is that each version is very good in it's own way.

Imagine Terry Jacks keeping the Adieu, Emil, and cheating Françoise? The song would’ve never gone mainstream. It had to be Americanized first with a more conservative approach. That’s the American music business!

Per a Tennessean article from February 1, 1970 this was the final take recorded almost at midnight of this episode of the Johnny Cash Show featuring Rod McKuen. The Ryman Auditorium balcony was jammed with McKuen fans.
