Joan Baez modified "Before The Deluge" into a special kind of peace song that is capable of softening the bitterness of a tyrant. When you heard of the cease fire in Gaza did you feel like singing alleluia? Joan has occasionally made songs that heal and teach. We need music and song to move past the wasteful toxic psychology of tyrants To read more about this job for music I have a blog titled Let the great arts heal and teach peace. The modern political scene needs more music, more softening the hearts of tyrants.

Both sides now..? * The faith and class of 'Joan in the big picture expressed back in the 60s in folk. Was like an air supply to the psychedelic undersea. I recall my dear sweet mother saying to me, "Son, "You're a damn smart ass! And always will be." " Don't ever try to please everyone." They'll just pile more on." So I took my love, -a record player. Out on the roof, where I could look down at Eugene... But the 'outsider was about to be "in' baby... Joan was part of my life till the Tipi had no plug in.. DARN! I'm pretty sure wars have rules but in peacetime people take strips off echoer. Non violent Gandhi 🤔 Mom never saw that I was the thorn in the side of bureaucrats. The straight people tried invisible but they wore it on their face. The left wagging its tongue in the face of authority. We, the waifs who lost too much to ever get back to Oz. All the years sleeping on the ground. We had to stretch our humanity in ways that could cover the boys in country and the soldiers they spit on/ A generation literally lost, Void of its innocence on the first TV used as a babysitter..

Biblically when men gain power they will violate their own stated aims. David, Solomon, many Israeli/Judah kings, Kennedys, Nixon, Biden. Not all become corrupt to as great an extent.

Well denialism is a huge problem or they want to pretend segregation ended and everything has been equal since but even before this more organized BLM movement there were the LA riots about Rodney King and other instances before the term "woke" could be applied in a derogatory sense. Some of its racism some of it is multiple barriers economics living in some ghetto you don't have the opportunities as a wealthy black family Obama was a lawyer too the black targetted community of Baltimore are not in the same league and a woman like Sonya Massey has three strikes against her black and poor and female and still some will side with murderous cops. Women have civil rights issues too.

"Why do you believe Donald Trump is in the pocket of Vladimir Putin and how did he end up there? That's a very good question, indeed, Malcolm. Especially since it's been unequivocally proven to be a false contrivance of Hillary Clinton, certain members of DOJ, FBI and "the intelligence community." The first of which you voted for, and the remainder of which you interviewed. Talk about a lead balloon. Yet, though you know all this, you still peddle this nonsense in 2025.

What a pity the interviewer was so bloody selfish and boring! A golden opportunity missed to have fun with the wonderful one and only Joan Baez. Except he made it about himself and his agenda. When you have brilliance your job is to unleash it. He tried to lasoo it and bring it into his barn. Bloody wasted opportunity.

Where the f was I when he was in his prime or even close to his death. A divorce. Yes. Young kids. Yes. I feel deprived to have found him after his death. I'd rather see him at a debate than any musical concert you can imagine.

Unbelievable how the dude wanted to go on and on about the great, legendary Bob Dylan. And he wouldn't stop even when she repeatedly objected. Thank God the audience finally shut him down. He didn't show a whole lot of respect. Chauvinist, like Bob Dylan and the way he treated JB!

Thank you for this program. I have been trying to follow The Dig's intensive history of Iran. Learning about Iranian history from the perspective of contexts that I'm more familiar with, like American Christian evangelicalism, is helpful to me in this endeavor. I'm better able to grasp a whole new timeline of events by anchoring it to people and places within my experience.

P.s. as the host says, your book reading like a Robert Louis Stevenson novel, would make a great musical along the rousing lines of Les Miserables. I'm sure there are many indigenous revolutionaries more worthy of credit for their contributions, but the significance of Baskerville is as you said a bridge to the western imagination. It could help more of us at the metropoles of empire take note and learn more deeply about the context of Iran. Reza Aslan, please consider a consult/collab with Lin Manuel Miranda. 😊

In the sixties we were young. Well actually I was very young. And we didn't know what was going on. So things were probably much worse than we realized...except in the mind of someone like Dylan when he wrote "A Hard Rain's a'gonna fall" or in the mind of MLK and in the mind of frightened children and in the prayers of the faithful. I am learning how to worry. I want to feel what others feel. I am starting to realize that I don't and I don't know how much time I have got left in order to be human. I also would like to know what my parents felt, above all.

Humble? Joan Baez? Nah, she's never been that. Feisty? Definitely. I admire how she's striven to lead a life of meaning and purpose. I was 15, had never heard of her, and a friend got us tickets to hear her at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in late '66 or early '67. It woke me up about the Vietnam War and turned me into a lifelong "lefty." Disappointing that she supported Kamala Harris and never condemned the genocide. She said she couldn't take sides. Weak.

As a teenager in the 70's, my admiration for Joan Baez's music was overshadowed by my astonishment at her sheer bravery in facing the violence-loving social forces, media, etc. with her activism. She could have enjoyed being a beloved singer and songwriter, but she took on so very much more. Thank you, Joan. A lifetime of thank-you's.
