In 1949 our battered nation was recovering from the Second World War and some rationing was still in place including probably the biscuits being handed out at the grandparents’ house. The National Health Service and the Welfare State was but a year old. Those children would, in all likelihood, never seen a television set.

I cannot count the number of happy days I've spent there. First with my parents, late 40s early 50s. All the way through to the 90s with my grandkids.

Actually not quite a traditional song but one written by Geordie Ridley - but you knew that already, I know. Re-imagined s-l-o-w-l-y as if in a dream-like experience.

Hi Kerry. Wonderful to hear from you. As the lyricist for The Exiles, I have a real soft spot for this one as it's about a family story and a Newcastle fan from back in the day when my Dad and members of his family would have been in the crowd. They lived on Monkchester from 1930 to 1950. So stories of life in Walker were very much part of my own education. Cheers. Alan

I was about 14 and saw Newcastle play Bolton at St James and Jackie scored in a 4 nil victory, crushed into the Gallowgate end near the ten minute flag it would be around 1958. Unlike todays prima donas Jackie lived a modest life in his home at the Four Lane Ends at Benton. He later worked at the John Jacobs driving range in Gosforth and one day I was there thrashing balls up the range when Jackie stopped behind me and said, with a smile, you've got a canny swing there lad stick with it, I was so chuffed that he spoke to me. Many years later I came across Alan Shearer at Goswick golf club when he was finishing his round and politely said how was your round, a sullen grunt was all I got from him. Jackie and his fellow players were very poorly paid although at the time their wages were above average this meant they never lost their connection with the working man.

Thanks for sharing your memories of Wor Jackie. I tried to capture that "man of the people" aspect of his personality in the lyrics to the song. This one continues to be our most popular track on KZbin. Best regards.

My Great Uncle was Hughie Gallacher. Thanks for posting this up. Very much appreciated.
@beatlecorner Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Thanks for your comment. My introduction to Hughie came via my Geordie grandad and his memory of seeing Hughie in action. He also taught me the song "D'ye ken Hughie Gallacher, the wee Scots lad, the best centre-forward Newcastle ever had". The Exiles are dedicated to creating songs about the fan experience across the club's history. It's a special moment for us to hear back from one of Hughie's descendants.

Thanks for being the first person to comment on KZbin about the song. Making the video was great fun. We're hoping to reach as many Leaf fans as possible with this, so feel free to share it far and wide. If it somehow found its way to the ears of anyone connected with any of the players mentioned or pictured, that would be about as cool as scoring in an overtime playoff game.
