I bought a 2002 gt spyder convertible last november from the son of the original owner. Picked it up for 400 dollars from under a tree. Gave myself a budget of 3k to restore it. I have all the parts i need to finish and i have only driven it once and i love this thing. I also have a 99 mustang gt convertible and it saddens me but once this eclipse is done im gonna have to decide which to sell. The mustang has an almost identical story having been bought for 350 dollars from the original owners son. I have driven that to Tx several times and it is currently my baby but the closer i get to finish the spyder the more im convinced that its not going to be easy to decide which to sell.

would you recommend this as a first car/ daily driver? i’m currently looking at a 2003 GT with 130k miles but seems like pretty good maintenance
@TeamGun3 ай бұрын
@@brandonn5408 I would, but you really need to find out when the timing belt / water pump were changed. The belts good for 100k miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. Its an interference engine so if it breaks, you’re breaking valves etc in the engine. You need to be comfortable either doing that job, or paying for it. Outside of that, yes very good. Common issue with these cars is the iac: idle air control valve, that’s about it. And that’s super easy to replace like 10min.
@brandonn54083 ай бұрын
@@TeamGun he sent receipts for both of them being changed about two years ago at 100k, at a mechanic shop as well along with front struts, tie rods, some kind of ball joints ( i’m not super knowledgeable) and he’s asking 3k which sounds pretty decent for me. it’s a manual as well so hopefully no tranny issues

What year is this though? I have an early 01 spyder gt that is throwing the p0183 code. From my understanding, there is no fuel temp sensor for this year?!?
@TeamGun5 ай бұрын
From my understanding talking to a few other forum members, they may included this starting in 01. My particular car is a 03.
@halfbak3d5 ай бұрын
@@TeamGun Okay, I've mainly been told it was late 01 and up that had it, but mine was manufactured in November of 2000. So I guess my best bet would be to just pull the sending unit and check? When searching the sensor on rockauto, it looks just like a coolant temp sensor, is that correct?
@TeamGun5 ай бұрын
@@halfbak3d No bro they come as part of the fuel sending unit, you can't buy the sensor and you can't buy the sending unit. Your only options are to buy a fuel pump assembly complete, or do as I did and get one from a Eclipse, Lancer, Galant, etc fuel pump from the wreckers and add it. A lot of after market fuel pumps don't include it, OEM will (Denso) and I know Carter will as I ended up replacing this fuel pump anyways (it was a ultrapower that the previous owner installed, cheap garbage pump). The Carter has been great for me and does include the temp sensor. You'll want to get it asap, as your mpg will really suffer with that code bro.

Thanks bro, I think its such a cool thing driving something underappreciated. It's so bland when everyone has the same taste, the same usual suspects pop up in car conversations, etc. Keep the car nice man, I have a feeling in the US the same thing will happen as it has in Canada, where prices for them have done nothing but go up. There are not many around here anymore, a nice GT Spyder is listing for $10,000.

Also, It really seems Mitsubishi put some money into the paint too. I have titanium pearl. Yours has the red, which is one of the nicer reds out there of any brand. The catalpa black & the blue are good. That frost green is nice (for a green). Of course, southern & western cars that have been baking in the sun for 20-25 years don't have a chance.

No, but what I'd do in the mean while is maybe pick up some kind of natural rubber sealant. I remember on my last spyder I was dumb enough to take it through an auto car wash a few times and it got water in the car the first time. I'd used a product that was all natural and made for boots and safe for rubber, I'd coated all the rubber trim and when I went through the next time it didn't get water in. I can't remember the name of the product. Another thing you can do for the canvas is get a water proofing spray that is waxed based and mean for tents, you can use that for the top. Lastly any kind if rips or tears, sewing with fishing line works really well because its very strong and transparent. Good luck bro.

Keep closing and trying, and eventually it'll take you to a French site with a count down. Once the count down is done, the file can be downloaded (rom will be in English).
