Absolutely the best repair video for broken rods I have found to date. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I've got a broken rod repair job coming in, so I'm definitely going to put your technique to work. Will let you know how it comes out.

Good video on working with lead. Instead of the C-clamp, have you tried using a Vise Grip clamp instead? You can pour fast and furious with that set up.

"Inserting the connecting piece of blank through the base of the broken rod" Right on!! You will not believe how many videos are out there were the connecting piece is filed down and inserted from the top (ergo does not really fit) and often the same clowns use far too short of a piece....... FAIL!! Your vid is great and you know what you are doing! Well down and keeps on fishing!!

Thanks! By adding the blank through the bottom you maintain the strength of the blank while making the repair easier and much more secure. Doing through the top of the rod is only asking for trouble later on. Thanks again! Steve

I just seen a repair video where the guy used a 4 to 5 inch piece of wood dowel that he sanded down and stuffed through the top to repair the rod. I don't think I would want to even try fishing with that rod after he was done. Might be good for a wall decoration.

Ah. I see. I have a rod that I am going to repair. As I was removing the real seat, I cut too deep and cut the graphite. So I cut it clean and inserted a smaller blank as you did. I am awaiting my 2 part epoxy in the mail from Mudhole. I was wondering if I can use anything from homedepot so I can save some of the epoxy for my handles
@Tiderunner455
@Tiderunner455 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use any good high strength two part epoxy that is made for fiberglass or graphite. Just avoid using any of the cheap 5 minute epoxy (they don't hold up as well) You can use the Loctite brand that sets in 5 minutes and cures in 24 hours make sure they are mixed well.

What does a repair like that cost for a $400.00 custom rod... $100.00 to $150.00... So now he has $500.00 to $550.00 in a broken rod... Right... The best advice is NOT buy custom rods they always break... More than likely that rod broke because the builder did NOT spline the rod before the build...
@Tiderunner455
@Tiderunner455 9 жыл бұрын
+Z71Ranger The cost of the repair for a DIY was about ten to fifteen dollars mostly in expoxy, flexcoat and threading. I stated at the beginning of the video that I built the rod myself and I did spline it correctly. I also stated that the guy who broke the rod fell off a rock when hit by a wave while fishing Montauk Point, NY and stepped on the rod breaking it in two pieces. That had nothing to do with the rod being a custom made rod nor not being splined. It had to do with it being broken by a fall. The video, although not perfect, only explains how to repair it by DIY. I only charged my friend the cost of the repair which as I said was $15.00. As far as using custom fishing rod over factory made rods, that is a matter of opinion but if you ask any hardcore surfcaster fishing in the Northeast, custom is the only way to go. They cast better, hold up better, and handle big fish over 30 pounds much better than most factory rods. Factory rods are rarely splined correctly. I have built probably 30+ surf fishing rods over the last few years, mostly for friends and myself. I don't have a rod building business of my own. It's more of a hobby during the winter doldrums.

+Z71Ranger Most rod failures are human error, its the owner who causes the breakage 9 out of 10 times. Incorrect sinker or lure weight when casting. High sticking the rod. The new lighter thin walled graphite rods must be handled with care, knocking them hard against other objects won't help either.

problem is that even though the repair can look visually perfect, the parabolic arch of the rod has been totally jacked. better to use it for a tomato stake and learn to hop rocks without falling down.
@Tiderunner455
@Tiderunner455 10 жыл бұрын
Yes the parabolic arch does change a bit. It's almost like fishing with a two piece rater than a one piece. I have done this repair on 4 rods. Some rods snapped in half as the one above and others as close to 12 inches from the top. Today all rods are still working well and have caught fish as big as a 48 pound brown shark and held up well. If you can afford a new $350 custom rod then use the broken one as a tomato spike but if you can't then get it repaired. It's a cheap fix for your primary rod or a back up.

Nice work - thanks for posting. I had $400 name-brand 80# graphite trolling rod break like that nearer the butt when a 12 lb skipjack tuna twisted the rod at the boat. The brand new rod was locked into the rod holder and the fish swam under the front of the boat and the bent rod twisted 180 degrees and completely shattered. They replaced it under warranty no questions asked. I'd like to try building a rod someday but the decreasing cost and increasing quality of the import rods makes it hard to justify.
@Tiderunner455
@Tiderunner455 11 жыл бұрын
The imports are geting better and as long as you have a life time warranty its tough to justify building one. In the case of my buddy's broken Lamiglas he knew that Lami wouldn't warranty a rod he stepped on. Even if Lami did warranty the blank they would have charged him about $100.00 for shipping the new blank

Your can repair it using this method. You will need to make sure you have a small sacrifical rod to insert from the bottow of the blank

It depends how long the vertical crack is and does it penetrate the rod. If the crack goes deep into the blank then the outer wall of the blank will be weakened. You could try re-enforcing the blank by wrapping the out wall with "D" thread before flex-coating it. But cracks have a tendency to spread and weaken the rod. If the crack is not too long then I would cut out the bad part and join the rod together. Best of luck! Steve
