Lovely warm vibrato. Well played, Sir! The principal cornet of my old brass band used to solo with this, and I always enjoyed it (though I think it sounds better on flugelhorn than on cornet). I would like to know more about the tune. Is it a Salvation Army hymn? And who was the smart lady pictured at the end of the video? Was that Joyce Webb? Was she an SA composer?

I used to listen the c.d of Jim Davies playing this in the 90's (best version ever, on youtube too), and l used to think how your unique style of vibrato would also suit this melody. Imagine my surprise when l saw you playing this 27 years later. Not really that surprised though, we like many of the same cornet melodies, so it was only a matter of time before you played this. Loved it, thankyou....you are the Jim Davies of Australia.

This was the era when the Kew soloists all had beautiful sounds and made their instruments sing, and this alone made this band very special, and it is why we won everything. Geoff on solo eupho, wow, what an amazing sound, as good as it gets. Ross on solo horn, such a pretty sound. Glen on cornet...the sound, the style, and the right type of vibrato, just awesome. Matt on baritone, the best baritone there ever was. Darren on trom, can match the best of them when in form. 6:26 - Beth on 2nd cornet stands up and knocks it out of the park with this giant fat sound with perfect vibrato...shows how good this band really was when back row players do things like that. And of course we had some great basses. Thanks for posting this Mark, l have wanted to hear this for the past 28 years. 😮 You make my dream come true today.

A great performance apart from a few mishaps. Would have been first place without them. How the band standard in Victoria has dropped since those days. A real shame.
@TheSproutarian
@TheSproutarian 7 ай бұрын
Yep, would have been a winning performance if it was a bit tighter in places and without the slips. Kew had two golden era, and their strengths were completely different. The later golden era Kew were stronger and tighter, but they didn't have the sound and musicality of the early golden era Kew.

Perhaps the best performance by Kew Band l have ever heard. That march was just WOW. When a band plays this at a certain standard, the magic comes out, and we were lucky enough to have reached the level where we got to hear it. Not many aussie bands play marches well, but we nailed it that day.
