This first aired on September 10, 1955 AD. I was four months & four days from being born. And, 16 years, one month, and 12 days before I was saved from God's righteous wrath.

Gunsmoke was television at its finest. The only show that is as good or better was MASH. Both of these shows were CBS television productions. Gunsmoke took quite few concepts from western history. Lawmen didn't want shootings or gunplay because people always got killed. Lots of the characters in Gunsmoke are women and men you can see in a C.M. Russell painting or read about in a history book. People who shot others for little or no reason often got guilty verdicts and a date with the hangman. Gunsmoke was a popular radio show. So the television show had lots written scripts to work from ready made for television adaptation. MASH worked because it's stories and scripts were taken directly from the experiences of interviews of Korean veterans.

Love when a overconfident gunslinger tries to get the drop on Marshal Dillon. Not as much as the undertaker, but close.

series got off to such a good start with this episode...Matt has flesh and blood human being...for much of the series he was simply the fastest, toughest marshal out there, no gun fight ever in doubt...

Someone claimed that in the 300+-some episodes of Gunsmoke, that Matt killed over 380+ bad guys. That was 21 years of episodes.

This was a great series. I’ve only seen a few episodes, but I noticed that the episodes placed a good deal of emphasis on the guest cast members and their stories. That was a smart move. I suspect that it kept the series fresh. My hat’s off to the stars of the show. I had watched a documentary in which Bruce Dern had mentioned that the main cast was very supportive of the guest stars. That shows a lot of class. That must have been a huge boost when James Arness said you’re doing a great job.
