It's just a stupid decision they made because they didn't have much female protagonist
@assassinscreedislife76363 күн бұрын
Alexios was the intended protagonist for Odyssey and fits way better for that story for so many reasons. How sexist Greek culture was is just one of them. Like so many people would not have even TALKED to Kassandra let alone invited her to political events with her social position. Alexios should be canon That being said, Eivor being a woman is also the only way Valhalla makes sense as a story is should stay the canon choice.

The fact that she was supposed to be the only playable character and yet they didn't put any effort into making her actually fit in just disappointed me. assassin's creed has lots of potential, but they just don't care.

Let's not pretend there's any "artistic" reason for why from Origins to Valhalla, the female option is treated as the _main/canon/relevant_ one. It's crystal clear that it all's just for forced diversity's sake and pandering. Layla is the proof of this and no doubt she coincidentally is diving into the memories of characters, that canonically have the same gender as her, even though Bayek and Leonidas break that rule. Displaying exclusively the male option in promotional art, in the expectation of selling more copies, is the only thing they're honest about.

Im glad im playing Alexios on my 1st playthrough. The most fun character in the series. "He's screaming but not in agony". This is the most hilarious 😂

The funny thing no one mentions is that even if Ubisoft’s goal wasn’t historical accuracy, making Kassandra canon still doesn’t make sense, even in the context of the story and setting of the game itself. Everyone always mentions the Olympic part, but what’s more egregious is there’s a side quest where you help a woman escape a death sentence for sneaking into the Olympics to watch her son compete, thereby acknowledging that women were indeed barred from being in the Olympics in any regard, even in this fictional depiction of Greece during this period. They even went out of their way to have a historically accurate depiction of how women were executed for this crime by bringing her to the top of a mountain where she would then be tossed off. This then begs the question of why Kassandra would then subsequently be allowed to compete in the Olympics if she is in fact the canonical character who’s story involves competing in Pankration. This is something that never gets followed up on even in passing or brief dialogue, it just happens. However, if you play as Alexios all these narrative issues instantly vanish.

Most importantly, women weren't trained as soldiers in sparta or anywhere in greece, so the flashbacks with nikolaos don't make sense

Imo I prefer Kassandra as the main character and Alexios as Deimos, but I can understand totally why people prefer Alexios. I think it's annoying that some people believe that it is so mindboggling that Ubisoft would make a female character canon and that it was supposed to be Alexios, but there was a last-minute change to appear "woke". Especially since the novel came out around the game's release and in that Kassandra was canon. Great video and commentary!

I dont hate Kassandra but the problem with making a 'canon character' is telling the player they made the right or wrong choice. They could've easily programmed Valhalla to have a functuon which checks your previous game progress (if you have one) and insert either alexios or Kassandra. But what makes it worse is the fans who berate you for liking alexios or even just picking him over Kassandra One of my favourite voice lines from alexios is this - "i have fought in so many wars", now while i wont deny Kassandras VA tried to make it sound emotional, alexios VA made it hit so hard

Or instead, make both of them appear depending on the gender that you choose for Eivor. Ex: Kassandra will appear if Eivor is male, Alexios will appear if Eivor is female.

It's so obvious to anyone with functional Braincells that Alexios was always intended to be the true protagonist of the game. Yeah, I know Ubisoft says otherwise. People forget that it was during this game's development cycle that Ubisoft "fell to the dark side". This was when the MeToo era was building up steam. When the politicization of videogames and the open promotion of social and political agendas in gaming was starting to become normal. This was when the Karens in Ubisoft's HR department essentially took over the company and anyone who dared contradict them would(and still will today) get MeToo'd and blacklisted. In addition to your point about women not being allowed in the Olympics, it's so much worse than that. In Ancient Greece a woman could not even approach a man to talk to him without a male escort unless she was at least one or two rungs ABOVE him on the social ladder. Grecian armies would rather DIE ON THE BATTLEFIELD than sit around waiting for a woman to come and lead them from the vanguard...the most glorious and honored position for a soldier...to victory. They'd be the laughing stocks of the greek world for letting a woman do all the heavy lifting on the battlefield for them. The losers would get less shade for that.

One more fun fact about gaming history here....this game was the last time any game to my knowledge released their analytic data regarding player choice of protagonist gender. Games will release all sorts of stupid analytic data...how many Foxes get petted in Ghost of Tsushima. How many play Fetch with scratch in Baldurs Gate 3. And they USED to release data on how many players chose a male or female main character. Very few games talk about that last analytic data after it came out that the MASSIVE and overwhelming majority of Odyssey players all chose Alexios despite Ubisoft pounding their "Cassandra is Canon" drums.

because he is a man and its believable i know its fiction but still. i hiate this agenda, trend that females can be warriors leaders etc. a very small minority of women can but not all and everywhere. they have to be exceptional to be like that.
@nickm124228 күн бұрын
For one he actually fits with the theme of Greece. Women ancient Greece didn't go around adventuring, fighting in wars, captaining ships, and competing in the MEN ONLY Olympics. That should be Alexios. On the flip side, Kassandra would be much better off as Deimos, the much more secretive and under the radar enforcer for this evil organization that wants to control the world.
@Joseph-wh5of28 күн бұрын
The only reason Kassandra is canon is because the devs felt the need to force a female character to be the protagonist. Kassandra does not fit the protagonist in this game at all, and it shows.

Meh- I think the last point is kind of weak. Assassin’s Creed has always been about rebelling against oppressive forces such as racial inequality, class inequality, dogmatic beliefs, and gender norms fits in there. There are a few ways I could see it written off why Kassandra could have been in the Olympics. But I think the rest is valid, Alexios seems like they were blessed with a better voice and/or mocap actor.
@Pix3lBАй бұрын
assassins creed was always been about assassins. don't bring western politics into it.
@richserver1019Ай бұрын
@@Pix3lB multiple things can be true at the same time. It’s not western politics, yes it’s always been a franchise about the assassin and Templar conflict, but in every game the game always tackles themes of this nature. AC1 explores the rebellion of a dogmatic set of tenants that are abused by the leaders of such. AC2 tackles the battle between those of the lower class vs those of the higher class. Brotherhood follows that as well, but also tackles the detail of religion getting involved. I’m not saying your wrong, but I’m not either. I just surmised that claiming that a women couldn’t be apart of the Olympics seems very easy to write off within the world that they are in with all the mystical stuff going on anyways. It’s the same argument that a lot of people are having with AC: Shadows, just because Yasuke wasn’t officially deemed a Samurai, doesn’t mean that the writers can’t take some creative liberties, it can even enhance the story. A black man who arrives in a foreign land and learns the culture and customs and chooses to understand and rebel against what is clearly wrong. Same thing could be with Kassandra, a women in a man dominated region learning the customs and culture of the Olympics, but choosing to rebel against them because they think they can do better. I’ve still never played Odyssey and I don’t plan on it from what I’ve heard about it, and myself not enjoying Origins anyways. So for all gameplay reasons I still agree with the video, I just think that if the writers were good, which I know they really aren’t, it could’ve been a cool moment that explores the themes of the Creed. Yknow killing those who are corrupt for the betterment of mankind and all that good stuff.
