I absolutely love Pure Magnetik's plugins and have long wanted something from them in hardware form. It's just that at the current price point, I have to choose between them and Strymon, and that's a choice I don't want to have to make. Sounds exactly like I'd expect something from them to sound though so I need to turn this video off before my GAS flares up again 🤣

Maybe a noob-question: It's possible to update the Torso S-4 also via an iPad or only with an Apple/Windows-computer, and works the S-4 as an audio-interface with a iPad. Thanks!

Nice work! Love the images too :) I do have a question regarding the S4, I'm considering it as my sample 'tool' for my dawless setup. I think it is equipped quite well for that with all the sample mangling tools / modes and great FX. But I'm not sure how well the S4 can 'reproduce' what it created yesterday. I usually work on multiple dawless projects at the same time, so I 'need' something that is able to switch between projects where I can continue with what I created the last time. This rules out a lot of the nice pedals out there (mood mk2 for example), where you have to sample what you just created to be able to use it again. How is the S4 working in this regard? Can you easily work on multiple projects and continue where you left the other day? Thanks on forehand!
@wholeheartedsongs2 ай бұрын
Hi thank you for watching and your question. I wouldn't say the S4 is necessarily great as an effects box because it only really has distortion delay in reverb which is definitely plenty but something like the SP404 would be better in that regard. as far as working on multiple projects, it's extremely easy because all the projects are saved and you can just load them really quickly and they're still gonna be some development on this so it may become even more useful
@tricks-and-tips2 ай бұрын
@@wholeheartedsongs Thanks! Yeah, the 404 is on my list too, but the S4 seems a bit more 'experimental' on the sample mangling side with the granular stuff and I think I want that :) Not sure yet though, but I guess there is only one way to find out. Watching tons of youtube videos hahahahahahahahahaha. Or just buying one, but it's out of stock again and quite expensive to 'just give it a try'.
@wholeheartedsongs2 ай бұрын
@@tricks-and-tips it's kind of advertised more as a granular sample mangler but I find it best used as a four track tape generative looper/mixer. And I'm not saying it's bad at those other things, but that part hasn't captured my imagination yet mainly because there's so many less expensive effects pedals that can handle that. In other words, I find it best used as something to quickly grab ideas with the built-in mic or line in sampler and generate loops, then say using it as an effects box or sample manipulator.
@tricks-and-tips2 ай бұрын
@@wholeheartedsongs Thanks for that insight! I miss a sampling device / player / magler box that I can use to add some texture to my jams. Right now I create those textures in the DAW and then just play them on my jams, but I don't find that a very inspiring workflow. I would like to be able to capture something (a bit of synth or piano playing) and then mangle it in the box and loop it while jamming. I would probably need to have multiple loops for various sections of the jam, so I thought the 4 tracks (tapes) could work for that. But I also want to be able to generate (mangle) the samples inside this box, probably (hopefully) using tempo sync so the FX are in sync with my project tempo. Well, that is my idea anyways. The SP-404 looks like it could do something like that, but I'm not sure if I like the many many many button combinations it uses. And I am quite sure I don't like its sequencer. And it does not have granular (not that I 'need' that per sé, but in my mind I need that) Another option I looked into is an MPC, but yeah, that is an ecosystem on its own and I had the Live 2 for a while, but returned it because it did not work well for live jamming. Long story short, I'm investigating my options and value the insight you are giving with your content and this conversation 🙂

Absolutely stunning. That’s the kind of stuff that can really take you somewhere mentally, and I enjoyed the journey. Could you explain the signal path you have here; what’s going into what? Who is looping, who is generating? I actually recently bought, a SP-404mkii, and have not really found it that intuitive compared to the other types of sequencing groove boxes I am used to. And I just ordered an S-4, which I am really excited for. Do you think they each have their roles? Or does having the S-4 kind of negate the need for the SP? I’m trying to decide if I’ll keep the SP after the S-4 arrives.
@wholeheartedsongs2 ай бұрын
thanks for listening. All of the audio is going through the SP404 which I use as an fx box and sample player. But the torso S4 is used to generate the main tracks of the piece so essentially I have the tape from the cassette player going into the 404 and the torso S4 going into the 404 so they're playing simultaneously, generating their own unique timing from loops. Enjoy the S4.
@g3cd3 ай бұрын
How did you line up the different tracks and make sure they start at the right time and the length fits? Feels very random and uncontrollable when I use my S-4.
@wholeheartedsongs3 ай бұрын
They don't lineup that's part of the fun. In essence, it's like generative looping because each time it's cycles through. It sounds a little bit different and the timing between the different tracks changes, and you can spontaneously change the timing of those relationships by adjusting things like tape, speed, sample length, pitch, etc. which is why I love it and feels very organic.
