What about the zinc weights do those melt down with the lead?
@FishQuest
@FishQuest Ай бұрын
The zinc has a higher melting temp than the lead so they are easily scooped off with the steel scrap however they can melt and “poison” the lead batch.

There is a knot used (esp) in the UK called the knotless knot. Which is the same as this right up to the final wraps you put in to secure the knot. This knot is such an improvement imo.
@FishQuest
@FishQuest 4 ай бұрын
I’ve used the knotless knot before when I was trying pva bait bags for carp fishing, haven’t really used it since. What I like about the egg loop knot is that it has the ability to open up and receive soft baits and hold them firmly. Where legal, we will find and shuck large freshwater mussels and put the meat through the loop of the knot. Thanks for the comment!

Excellent video. I notice you don't seperate the soft lead into a seperate batch. Also you need to address the ZINC weights that are always in the mix, and the importance of seperating them out. I know that you know this but just didn't mention it. ZINC melts at a higher temp so if you DON'T let your batch get too hot they will get scraped out with the steel clips. BUT, if you let your batch get above 667 degrees, any stray zinc weights will melt and destroy the entire batch. ZINC will melt into the lead but will not alloy with it. ZINC contamination forms a gloopy ugly mess that is useless. Again great video, thanx.
@FishQuest
@FishQuest 4 ай бұрын
great comment and info. looking back, I wish I would have gone over the need to sort out the zinc wheel weights from the mix or make mention of the need to babysit the melting pot to spot any stray zinc weights. Looking back I don't believe I have ever actually melted zinc weights on my lead because I'm constantly watching and waiting for the lead to melt so the zinc didn't have the chance to melt at a higher temp. From what I understand only a percentage of the zinc will mix yet it will "poison" the batch which will result in inferior casts. I do have one question for you and that is lead melts at 621 °F and zinc at 786 °F, you mentioned 667°F, what does that temp pertain to? Again thanks for the comment and helping others learn.
@ITZGR82BFREE

@@FishQuest Sorry i popped that number off the top of my head. Your number is correct for the melting point of ZINC. I have wrecked a few batches of lead and it doesnt take much zinc to do it. The noun ammunition can be countable or uncountable. In more general, commonly used, contexts, the plural form will also be ammunition. However, in more specific contexts, the plural form can also be ammunitions e.g. in reference to various types of ammunitions or a collection of ammunitions. Constitutions referring to the potential that the viewers of this particular video are not of the same nationality, but rather scattered in various countries in which “constitutions” would be proper. Thanks for the comment and keeping me honest on my 3rd grade grammar.

Here is a link for the grill: amzn.to/47HZPiI. The sheaths/wallets I make I haven’t sold anywhere, I typically just make what I need out of the tails for myself, perhaps one day I’ll market my tail products I have another video called “Beaver Tail Bait How To” that video shows how I skin a beaver tail for bark tanning. Back in the 70s and 80s my father and l enjoyed trapping together. We made decent side money at it too. Not only from the pelts. But also the contract bounty from farmers to rid their properties of problem beaver,otter and occasional fox. Beaver can cause a lot of damage by flooding low lying cropland. A family of otters will empty a good catfish pond before you can say "Where'd all my fish go"? And foxes can wipe out your chickens. We ate beaver a few times. I guess deliciousness is in the mouth of the beholder. It's fairly edible. But l can't say l prefer it to a good Whitetail backstrap.
@FishQuest
@FishQuest 6 ай бұрын
To each his own I guess, I honestly have only eaten mule deer that have lived primarily in sage. Everyone says that acorn fed whitetail is where it’s at, one day I suppose. I agree entirely with you. Many animals can quickly do thousands of dollars in damage when left unchecked. Everyone points their fingers at trappers until their cat/poodle gets hauled off by a coyote or their canal flooded because muskrats moved in. I bet you wouldn’t trade the memories trapping with your dad for anything. My trapping memories are some that I hold close. Thanks for the comment.
