Not to mention, the bar bands and venue bands are frankly opposites. Bars what you to play songs everyone knows. Stuff that has mass appeal. Original music should be sprinkled in, not the main focus. Becoming a touring band off of a "bar set" is almost impossible. Venue bands need to be focused on original music. Yes, you can go the tribute band route, but theres a limit to how far that can take you. However, getting off the ground with just original music is really tough too. Basically, cover band/bar sets make it easy to get started but make it very hard to grow. Venue bands are super hard to get started, but once you get rolling, it's not so bad.

Important note: Keep the “real” job while doing your first dozen or so gigs so you can gauge how consistent it will be, and judge your own habits to ensure you’re not actually spending MORE money at the gig. (drinks, food, travel, whatever it happens to be) I love the idea that it’s within reach, but you should always chase your dreams with a safety net beneath you 😊

I had a friend who used to make $900/day playing bass in a CO resort town… 3 gigs a day… the only problem was the down seasons when tourism slowed. He was an excellent player though- he could’ve made it anywhere.

Luthier here. don’t loosen your strings when flying. it’s a complete BS myth, that can sometimes cause issues. instead, fly with a humidipak. i service many guitars from people who fly consistently, and them having their strings at tension when flying causes no issues, it actually PREVENTS issues. what DOES cause issues though, is when you loosen the strings, arrive at your destination, and then realize your neck is all wonky because you loosened your strings like a nimrod and then forgot your truss rod adjustment key, and now have to play your gig with your messed up guitar. the neck is held in position by two forces, the string tension, and the truss rod; mess with one, it tends to mess up the other. the only people who perpetuate this myth are old head luthiers/techs who don’t listen to modern science and research. a basic google search will tell you, this is useless. remember kids, just because someone says something, doesn’t mean it’s true; trust science. sick guitar case though !

Thanks for this info! I just slack the strings in case a TSA agent or baggage handler w too much free time decides to pull my guitar out for a jam… I want it to be 0% fun to play when they open the case. Probably overkill… 😂

@@jemmermusic i’ve ordered $4000+ acoustic guitars personally for myself, and everytime, without fail, they come in E standard and nothing is wrong, and it actually prevents the wrongs. if Santa Cruz, Bourgeois, Atkins, and Collings all ship out in E standard, and those boutique companies advise against detuning the guitar for shipment, i would heavily take that advice. even without being a student and knowing the science.
