This movie is a masterpiece and it only gets better with time like wine. I watch it every year for 27 years and its always different. I found VHS at an age of 10 and I still feel like there is a lot more to learn. You pick your character from the movie and you make him grow inside of you and sometimes dark side overcomes what Lincoln called better angels of our nature. Good is not always trying but life is confusing messing up good and evil. Thank you and I split now.

The other great Hopper performace is as the vengeful Texas Ranger chasing the cannibalistic Sawyer clan in the criminally underappreciated Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Looking at a grotesque pile of carnage he utters the classic line "boys, you never shoulda been doing this"..But NOTHING beats "You're looking at the heads." That to me is the best line ever

You’ll notice that as much as the crew gets on each other’s nerves, they do gravitate towards each other. In the mess hall scene after they have finally departed the alien planet, they are not snacking as far apart as possible as you would expect. They’re all tucked into a side niche for company.

I don't know where I read this, but supposedly their was a summary of WW2 vs. Vietnam that claimed that on average a WW2 combat vet spent appr. 2 months out of a year in actual battle, while the VN vet did the opposite and spent all BUT 2 months per year in combat situations. Might be an exaggeration, but personally I wouldn't be too surprised if this was close to being accurate for a lot of those guys. I joined up right after the war ended, at 17 yrs old, and met a number of guys on their way out of the military who had very obviously been deeply FU by their experiences "in country." Nothing much would shock me anymore about that war.

Regarding PLATOON's portrayal of the My Lai massacre, while the violent actions of the soldiers in that scene are not to be condoned, it is strongly implied that the village WAS collaborating with the enemy. The platoon received orders to burn the village down as they departed, not to detonate it. However, as they traversed the fields adjacent to the village, explosions could be seen and heard. These are presumably the result of fires they set detonating hidden caches of ammunition, RPG's, etc. It has been speculated that the platoon might have planted explosives, but this seems unlikely as they found no contraband to destroy, and their sole directive was to only incinerate the village.

I think it was a blessing in disguise that this scene was cut from the original theatrical release, because anyone that watched Redux would appreciate it and it is now open to discussion in our time.

I literally feel like almost everything made after the 80's is just missing a certain hard to describe feel and quality. Like the world was just better then and it bleeds into the films.

for me, the movie never really made sense, until I saw the lengthy ''Redux'' version with both the French plantation and 'USO brothel' sequences. The French thing and its twilight meal are the fading of empire and a warning that the US is in their same position, now.

@CinemaTyler at 8:50 you mention Coppola's notes in reference to Kurtz "cutting ties with the south Vietnamese in favor of the north Vietnamese". It sounds like you're saying Kurtz joined the NVA, which he didn't, although he does start fighting like the NVA. It's a nitpick but you put out The Best film docs and they'll be used by history nerds 50 years from now so they need to be perfect.

I’ve got all the versions of the film. I just got the “Final Cut” I like Redux the best I was 1-H draft classification “student deferment” I think this is the worst movie and the best movie. I read heart of Darkness story in college. It’s so well written it’s humbling

I totally disagree about this scene having no impact on the movie . It's a shame it's not in the final movie because what it does most importantly is it allows you to identify with The Human Side of Sheen and the crew . This scene is pivotal and absolutely necessary in pacing and flow the movie . Ever since I watched this as a teenager when it came out I knew there was something missing. Now I know what it was. Another extremely important aspect of this scene is it allows the viewer to take a deep breath and relax in what is otherwise an entirely stressful thought-provoking movie

Best part is the end of version 2 early 80s and Redux which is not in the original. Slow mo explosions of the B52 strike. Hendix and Kali Yuga dance riff was always mesmeric. Never really liked the French part but hey it was their own.

Willers is not an observer really he is a human plain and simple.’he does not talk much because the people in the boat do not have a right to know. He needs to get his job done and will do whatever he needs to do it. Talking he does not really need to do much if. His job is to wait in a hotel room drinking and getting hookers waiting for that call. The. He is tasked with Killing someone’s. Is it legal no but he is just following orders and he is a good killer. The higher ups send him out there and if he is caught they will just say he went rouge.

Yes the war was faught by children but Willard was Ann officer and one that had been doing wet work for a while.!Sheen was 36 at the time while Redford and Nicholson was maybe 39 so not much of a difference. McQueen was 46 so I understand him maybe bei ng too old.

In a way the French scene reminds me of the hobbits time with Tom Bombadil. It's an intriguing side story that while not absolutely necessary to the plot, adds a richness to the overall story.
