I wish I could have done more to save two baby kittens because my mom was too late to bring the supplies, nor could we have afforded the proper supplies needed. Same with another two where my cousins and auntie ruined the scent of two healthy kittens by feeding them replacement milk which caused the mother and other cats to reject them and attack them. Had to bury all four (happened at seperate times). Thank you for this information. 😭💝

i found 5 of them in bad weather with their mother laying dead beside them. they’re around 1 month and i took them to the vet for deworming and a checkup (i wish i could’ve taken them sooner i didn’t know it was this immediate) because it looked like they had fleas but they apparently had ringworm. they all passed away back to back except one that seems to be doing better than the other ones but i’m scared now because another 2 that seemed to be doing well passed away. i’m quarantining him inside a cage because of the ringworm, giving milk replacer every 4-5 hours, vitamin syrup 2 times a day and alcleaning him with a spray for the ringworm 2 times a day as well. he has lesions because of the ringworm of course (and its recovering takes long) but he plays and is active and seems to be doing well (apart from the fact that his stomach is swollen too at the moment and stool is becoming liquid-y but the vet said that’s okay and because of the vitamins and deworming) but i’m scared if his passing away is inevitable because of the other ones. what steps should i take to ensure he makes it? should i still wrap him up in a blanket if his temperature seems fine? (and my country’s climate is fairly warm as well) does he need to be wrapped in the blanket all the time? is there such a thing as overheating the kitten? what should i do about the stool too. does he need electrolytes in this situation?
@FosterTheFelinesАй бұрын
They will wiggle out of the swaddle if they get hot. If you're not seeing any of the symptoms that he is fading, there's no need to keep him swaddled all the time. Just watch gor these symptoms and act as quickly as you can if you see them. You can put a heating pad under a blanket in his cage if it's worrying you. I aways keep heated bedding for the at this age, on a continuous low heat. I know how scary it is after seeing the others pass away but truly, it sounds as if you're doing everything right at the moment. You try adding a tiny bit of pumpkin puree (not pie filling, just pumpkin) to his formula and mix it up really well. You want it thin enough to still pass through the nipple on his bottle. The pumpkin can help firm up the diarrhea.

It's not necessary to have all of these supplies. As I say in the pinned comment, it's okay to make substitutions. The most important things are raising their body temperature and blood sugar. You can use any source of sugar you have on hand that isn't toxic to cats. I helped one person who used a blanket on top of their PS5 to keep the kitten warm. If you are a foster and you foster neonates regularly, you end up having most of these things on hand. But I don't expect the average person to have all this.

@fosterthefelines Thank you for this! I followed this for my 2.5 weeks old kitten and he’s made a lot of progress in the last 24 hrs. He went from being weak, emaciated and unable to open his eyes or even swallow his doses to now walking around and demanding his bottle feed every few hours. Although, he seems to be doing fine he’s having some watery stool (but energy levels and appetite is getting better) is that to be expected with this protocol? Note: I am giving him couple antibiotics too that vets prescribed but only started it once he gained some energy, before that I was just following the parker protocol, still am- on step 7 now with normal feeding.
@FosterTheFelinesАй бұрын
I'm so glad it's helping! I'm sorry for the delay. You can get some pureed pumpkin and mix a bit into his formula. Not a ton, you still want it soupy enough to go through the nipple/syringe. If this doesn't help, try to get a stool sample to the vet to rule out things like coccidia. The protocol itself shouldn't cause diarrhea but depending on what the kitten is going through, and how long you had to do only fluid/electrolytes, their stool might change.

I will ask this, then continue reading comments to see if the questions been asked. What if they wont eat? I have a 2 week old. Give or take a couple of days. He is fighting, but struggling. I cant get him to eat. He pushes it away after maybe .5 ml I can "force hime". I dont mean hurtful or aggressive. But you just have to hold their heads and get hte bottle in their mouths. If I didnt do this, he wouldn't eat. But how long should I "make him" eat? He would never do 4-5 ml. Hes about 1/2 pound :( Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!
@voss_homestead.oh.chapter2 ай бұрын
Would it be helpful (or maybe 2 week olds can't digest well enough yet) to add some homemade bone broth instead water when mixing the KMR? I am just trying to think of things htat might make him drink.
@FosterTheFelines2 ай бұрын
This can be tricky. Is he lethargic? It can help to give them some Karo, not the electrolytes solution, just straight Karo, a few minutes before you try to feed him. This can sometimes give them the energy boost they need to eat a bit more. There's a technique I call "reverse weaning". I had to create it for some 2ish week old kittens that just refused to take milk. I tried 3 different nipples, different syringes... they would not take it. I blended up some pate with formula and forced them to try that. The taste of meat did it for them. Once I got them eating again, I slowly added more and more milk to their mixture until I was able to remove the wet food completely until they were at a more respectful weaning age. This is obviously not something I recommend on the daily but for those that have tried everything else and you're out of options. When you get to this point, it's about keeping them alive
@voss_homestead.oh.chapter2 ай бұрын
@@FosterTheFelines he would never wake up to eat if I didn’t try to feed him, but with that said, when I do try to feed him, he does sometimes make noise, try to push it away. But I would consider lethargic at this point. Mama abandoned him and two siblings. The other two are doing great!! He was wet, cold. Honestly, I think he was dead. He was so limp. But something told me to work with him, I did. Long and short, he start breathing again. And for about a day, he seem to be doing better. And then the last two days have just been a progression of going down hill. I came across your video a little bit ago and it just gives me hope! I have been giving him the electrolyte solution. And there’s been a couple times that seems like he’s a little perkier. He opened one eye lol that’s huge because he just has not really given much effort. But yet I can tell he’s fighting. I don’t know maybe that’s hopeful thinking.

I thought it was advised not to give them anything by mouth if they were not conscious or responsive
@FosterTheFelines3 ай бұрын
Well, I've never heard that said, but to be fair, I can see how aspiration can be a concern. That said, I've never had that be an issue, but most importantly, they simply must be treated immediately. You can't wait for them to become conscious again to treat them because they may not ever wake up if you wait. I don't know if you've ever had a kitten crash to have seen it first hand, but they go downhill very quickly. FKS protocol is often your very last chance to save them. Also, keep in mind how little .1ml actually is. You're administering very small doses while they are unconscious.
@claudiafahey13533 ай бұрын
@FosterTheFelines I'm an RN it's dangerous to administer anything orally on an unconscious person yes for obvious reasons of aspiration and choking. I have limited experience with animals, however I understand there can be exceptions made. Maybe a clarification is needed here....is the Karo mixture applied sublingual? Again, choking is a major concern. I know time is of the essence. For unconscious diabetics there is glucagon...I wonder if that's not available for animals.
@FosterTheFelines3 ай бұрын
@claudiafahey1353 I'm sure glucagon would work just fine for animals but in animal rescue, Karo is the go-to. It is very effective, easily obtainable, affordable, and easy to administer. Not many foster families are able to be trained in administering injections. There are glucose gels, of course, that would work well for this purpose but again, Karo is much more affordable. We often have to purchase our own supplies and most of our fosters (nor the shelter/rescue) just can't afford things like that. Another issue is that many of the people I help with this video have very little experience and are trying to save a kitten with what is available. They are not likely to have glucose gel at home. But they might have Karo, honey, or maple syrup. I'm not sure what kind of clarification you are suggesting... It's pretty straightforward; place the kitten in an uptight position, insert the tip of the syringe in the side of the mouth, and slowly push the solution into the mouth. If the kitten has lost his swallowing reflex, the excess solution will just spill back out. This is why I stress the importance of positioning.
@tinkerton78563 ай бұрын
Every 3 minutes for how long, 30 min, hour ?
@FosterTheFelines3 ай бұрын
To add, follow the chart in the protocol to start giving fewer doses as you see progress. If the kittrn becomes unresponsive after doing better, you go back to every 3 minutes.
@deeharding56893 ай бұрын
But How do I know if my cats blood sugar is low and if this is necessary or if I should just give her water in syringe ?
@FosterTheFelines3 ай бұрын
It's really hard to know the exact reason a kitten starts going downhill. A lot of vets won't even do anything for young kittens, they just recommend euthanasia. But we do know that hypothermia and hypoglycemia are often involved, so keeping them warm and raising their blood sugar is the best thing you can do. Kittens go downhill fast so it's important to make sure these two things are addressed asap. Unless you have immediate access to a vet that will test the kitten, you won't know for certain. However, it won't hurt to give them the sugar if it is not, in fact, too low. To be completely honest, when a kitten starts crashing, they could be hours or even minutes away from death. I don't say this to scare you but it's the truth. That's why this protocol is so intense; it's often your very last chance to save them. So you just have to watch for all the symptoms I list in the video and do your best to follow the protocol if you feel like your kitten is crashing.

We get kittens on our porch or in the back yard that are abandoned by their mothers, almost all of them die, but we have one that lived, mental, physical and other "invisible" damages made us wonder what was going to happen. She is two years old and has never gone into heat or showed any sign of doing so. The orange "boys" know. The vet said she is definitely a female. The rest are buried in a garden of memory in the front yard. I have one that is failing right now. Refuses to eat, will drink water, but sleeps on my chest or with one of the other cats (cats came in even numbers, right) The other cats seem to know what is going on and take turns with her. Right now, she is resting on a "hot spot", my laptop computer that I am writing this on. I have some maple syrup, I will check the label JUST IN CASE before I get a dosing ( feeding) syringe.

Sadly, she passed away a little over a month ago. She was getting convenia injections every couple of weeks. I also gave her a short cycle of tobramycin drops for her eyes. I think she had progressed to an advanced stage rather quickly. I had her tested about 3 months prior, and she had been borderline stage 3. I last had her retested her for anemia after weeks of varenzin treatment, and those levels were still within normal range. I have learned that CKD is the most common disease with cats. Some cats can live for years on a subcutaneous fluid and renal diet. I think it depends on genetics and age. I wish you and your cat all the best. Cherish every moment you have together.
