I thought it was advised not to give them anything by mouth if they were not conscious or responsive
@FosterTheFelines5 күн бұрын
Well, I've never heard that said, but to be fair, I can see how aspiration can be a concern. That said, I've never had that be an issue, but most importantly, they simply must be treated immediately. You can't wait for them to become conscious again to treat them because they may not ever wake up if you wait. I don't know if you've ever had a kitten crash to have seen it first hand, but they go downhill very quickly. FKS protocol is often your very last chance to save them. Also, keep in mind how little .1ml actually is. You're administering very small doses while they are unconscious.
@claudiafahey13535 күн бұрын
@FosterTheFelines I'm an RN it's dangerous to administer anything orally on an unconscious person yes for obvious reasons of aspiration and choking. I have limited experience with animals, however I understand there can be exceptions made. Maybe a clarification is needed here....is the Karo mixture applied sublingual? Again, choking is a major concern. I know time is of the essence. For unconscious diabetics there is glucagon...I wonder if that's not available for animals.
@FosterTheFelines5 күн бұрын
@claudiafahey1353 I'm sure glucagon would work just fine for animals but in animal rescue, Karo is the go-to. It is very effective, easily obtainable, affordable, and easy to administer. Not many foster families are able to be trained in administering injections. There are glucose gels, of course, that would work well for this purpose but again, Karo is much more affordable. We often have to purchase our own supplies and most of our fosters (nor the shelter/rescue) just can't afford things like that. Another issue is that many of the people I help with this video have very little experience and are trying to save a kitten with what is available. They are not likely to have glucose gel at home. But they might have Karo, honey, or maple syrup. I'm not sure what kind of clarification you are suggesting... It's pretty straightforward; place the kitten in an uptight position, insert the tip of the syringe in the side of the mouth, and slowly push the solution into the mouth. If the kitten has lost his swallowing reflex, the excess solution will just spill back out. This is why I stress the importance of positioning.

Every 3 minutes for how long, 30 min, hour ?
@FosterTheFelines7 күн бұрын
To add, follow the chart in the protocol to start giving fewer doses as you see progress. If the kittrn becomes unresponsive after doing better, you go back to every 3 minutes.
@deeharding56898 күн бұрын
But How do I know if my cats blood sugar is low and if this is necessary or if I should just give her water in syringe ?
@FosterTheFelines8 күн бұрын
It's really hard to know the exact reason a kitten starts going downhill. A lot of vets won't even do anything for young kittens, they just recommend euthanasia. But we do know that hypothermia and hypoglycemia are often involved, so keeping them warm and raising their blood sugar is the best thing you can do. Kittens go downhill fast so it's important to make sure these two things are addressed asap. Unless you have immediate access to a vet that will test the kitten, you won't know for certain. However, it won't hurt to give them the sugar if it is not, in fact, too low. To be completely honest, when a kitten starts crashing, they could be hours or even minutes away from death. I don't say this to scare you but it's the truth. That's why this protocol is so intense; it's often your very last chance to save them. So you just have to watch for all the symptoms I list in the video and do your best to follow the protocol if you feel like your kitten is crashing.

We get kittens on our porch or in the back yard that are abandoned by their mothers, almost all of them die, but we have one that lived, mental, physical and other "invisible" damages made us wonder what was going to happen. She is two years old and has never gone into heat or showed any sign of doing so. The orange "boys" know. The vet said she is definitely a female. The rest are buried in a garden of memory in the front yard. I have one that is failing right now. Refuses to eat, will drink water, but sleeps on my chest or with one of the other cats (cats came in even numbers, right) The other cats seem to know what is going on and take turns with her. Right now, she is resting on a "hot spot", my laptop computer that I am writing this on. I have some maple syrup, I will check the label JUST IN CASE before I get a dosing ( feeding) syringe.

😭, just rescued this little guy outside a hotel here in TX during this nasty weather. He was so skinny, but screaming his little head off. Took him home, bathed him, and he seemed to be doing good. He had his 'milk' teeth, so fed him with a dropper with goats milk I had in the fridge that had defrosted...and he also ate some of the fancy feast infant pate. Even used the litter box. But he started fading last night...gave him water&salt&Karo....went to the store this am for Pedialyte......came back and he was gone. 😢. He was a cutie too....black and white with little "bandit" markings, even a little ❤ on his paw.😭 I love black&whites......my 3 foster fails are gray&tabby. Asked the MOST HIGH 2 welcome him N2 heaven and keep him there 4 me. Along with my dog Rolo, his kitty brother Oreo.....my baby I brought when I moved back from England..."Winston"..Rest N peace little Bandit...😢 I take comfort in knowing rhat at least his last hours here were not trying to stay alive in a storm....that he did have food and cuddles..he even purred a little the night before last.....😢

My cats eyes are red and oozing. I think it’s conjunctivitis. Can I use coconut oil at this stage? And do I put it in eye or eyelid?
@FosterTheFelines2 ай бұрын
Yes, you can try the coconut oil and it can go in the eye. I smear it on the eye and open and close the lid several times to try to get it inside. I know I have a vid somewhere demonstrating this, and if I can remember which one it is, I will come back with a link for you. Conjunctivitis can get serious very quickly so if I am see seeing an improvement in several hours (like overnight) I will get them to the vet to get some antibiotic ointment.

I was the only one there for my kitten who was the last born in the litter. The mama cat isn't even doing anything to try to help their baby. The baby is weak. Wobbly, struggling to breath, dehydrated, cold. I tried to keep the baby warm. Doing what I can to help. I don't have almost all of the things that was mentioned in the video sadly. Only surger and water which I mixed well and did small finger drops to the baby's mouth. The baby is still alive and struggling and my own mother wouldn't let me try to save it even more. Just told me to leave it to the mama cat. All I know is the baby isn't gonna live until the next day. Thanks to my mom. I was crying when I held it for the last time. I did everything I can for him.

my newborn cat is fading because of infection, can i still try this?
@FosterTheFelines3 ай бұрын
It's worth a try. I obviously can't guarantee it will work, but it could buy enough time to allow antibiotics or other treatment to work. If you're able to pull him through, since there is an active infection, you'll need to plan on continuing a super vigilant watch for any signs that he's fading again and restart the protocol. Good luck ❤️🙏🏻

My cat has a pretty serious abcess that keeps getting reinfected. We've been treating it with antibiotic injection. She's got CKD so she can't go under anasthesia. Between trying to keep her hydrated with subcutaneous fluids and getting her to eat with anti nausea and appetite stimulant medication and monitor her recurring abcess infection from getting worse it's been a difficult journey. She's strong though. She looks like your kitty. ❤ shoutout to Tuxedo cats!

What stage CKD is she in? How long on antibiotics and what is the antibiotic you are using? Our cat is going through this right now.😥
@lindseycassella3015Ай бұрын
Sadly, she passed away a little over a month ago. She was getting convenia injections every couple of weeks. I also gave her a short cycle of tobramycin drops for her eyes. I think she had progressed to an advanced stage rather quickly. I had her tested about 3 months prior, and she had been borderline stage 3. I last had her retested her for anemia after weeks of varenzin treatment, and those levels were still within normal range. I have learned that CKD is the most common disease with cats. Some cats can live for years on a subcutaneous fluid and renal diet. I think it depends on genetics and age. I wish you and your cat all the best. Cherish every moment you have together.

I dont know why it's happening. I try to feed it, and it doesn't want to feed. It's simultaneous feeling of joy and sadness. Joy because healthy kitten is thriving. And. Sad because fading kitten isn't. I like my fading kitten because it looks like a gremlin. I want it to survive.

You DID get it in his eye!!! starting at 49 second of the video you wipe your hand completely over his face, starting at second 52, you can see him squinting and blinking with discomfort and you are completely oblivious to his discomfort. You should never wipe your sulphur covered gloves over a cat or kitten's face but use a small sponge squeezed out to carefully apply the dip to his head, by dabbing it, being very careful to NOT get any in his eyes, by applying too much and letting it run down into his eyes. I always rub a small cloth upward above the eyes catch any sulphur. Be sure to have an eye wash saline solution to rinse should you happen to get any in the cats eye. There are many good videos on sulphur dipping. This is not one of them.
@FosterTheFelines9 ай бұрын
The hand did not touch his whole face. The hand only made contact with the side of his face and forehead. The only reason that was done was to make sure there would be no Sulphur dripping into his eyes because kittens shake the liquid off of themselves and the mist can go everywhere. I just rewarched the video 4 times. We did not spray or wipe his eyes. Any Sulphur you see near the eyes at all was carefully applied off camera as I could not do this and film at the same time. And yes, I keep saline on hand for any accidents. I don't know what kind of Sulphur you used but the kind our vet gave us absolutely burned our eyes just being in the same room. It must be amazing to know everything about situations you weren't present for.
