Underrated solution: pursue jobs with low traffic (from unpopular job boards, no-name companies, LinkedIn posts with minimal likes/comments, local employers). It’s SO much easier to get into those jobs because you have less candidates to compete against. Then, once you’ve worked there for 6-12 months, you can leverage that experience (potentially inflating it) to find a better job. This is what I did and it worked!

@@michealcoleyoungif freelancing qualities then that might be a viable avenue. My dad works in construction and from that point of view, there's a bunch of construction companies that either have no website presence or their website outdated like from the early 2000's. I did one for an uncle's outdated WordPress construction website and got a reference from that project to do a website for this lady that needed one since she was going to branch away from her property management job and start a consulting business of her own. She was one of the testimonials I had to reach out to for my uncle's website. Also, I did a traversy media ecommerce full stack app and later got to attend a sponsored bootcamp where one of the projects was a reservation app. I plan on using that apps logic for the ecommerce app (using this one's user accounts, authentication, etc.) for a website lodging platform since my sister's trying to have a rental property like an Airbnb. Kinda inflating, since it's not for a company per se (though not you won't be lying), but the experience is still there, even if it's on your own.

I appreciate your quandary but the main "professional" difference is all the unknowns for the sector that you are targeting. For example, take the space business (Denver tech, West coast tech). There may be strict rules coding for something on orbit. Python is out completely. Also having your code scrutinized by professionals in the same field is humbling. It's different than coding at home -- there will be multiple reviewers too before it folds into the main code branch. Are your skills ready to run 24/7 on -orbit for example. Anyway -- is it possible to step back and get some pro experience on the resume then move up the chain?

I hear you for sure. In my own job, I actually applied to 50 internal jobs and all were rejected and then my boss encouraged me to apply to one using him as a referral, again they rejected me. The system right now is so messed up it’s. It even funny. At this point I expect a rejecting, but your absolutely right they can’t take away someone’s skills that you have done on your own time coding and reject you because you didn’t work in a professional setting. Sometimes I think these recruiters try and come up with reasons that make no sense. I was also told at my company to get a mentor, and I searched around found a few people in their program, and none of them responded back to me but they responded back to other workers, so I’m afraid there is horrible favoritism within companies and it’s the same with recruiters they are highly bias. I’ve interviewed, I’ve taken their tests for math, reading comprehension, logic etc passed them and still got rejected for the job. I personally stopped applying for internal jobs because I was jerked around too many times even though my skills, education and profile, fit the ideal candidate, they still rejected 🙅‍♂️ me. I’m afraid at companies that there is extreme favoritism, and nepotism and if your not liked or if your not in their club or clique at work, you won’t get advancement or even a better job. It’s like the lottery, or a roll of the dice 🎲

Hey, I really enjoyed watching your video. I found your take on the market, specifically software engineering, interesting and definitely relatable. However, I think there are more aspects of the situation to consider. Since it's a free market, the influx of software engineering candidates largely determines placement. Companies may have specific criteria for candidates, but they often end up with tens of qualified candidates who meet these. It takes skill and experience to produce an app and showcase your abilities, but when it comes to placement in a big organization, many companies will prefer candidates with direct experience in a corporate setting. There’s a lot that goes into communication, collaboration, etc., within a corporation -- which is somewhat like a skill in itself. And why wouldn't they prefer candidates who meet these additional criteria? Meeting all these stipulations often correlates with a better hire, so of course, most companies are going to screen for them. This is the reality of being competitive for SE jobs in today's market and for the foreseeable future-you need to have it all, and then some. The screening process is just the first step; then come the technical challenges and coding whiteboards.

I think the problem is more the competition than anything. They gets hundreds and sometimes thousands of applicants to job postings - they are able to find someone with the professional background and years of experience within an organization that the client is looking for. When they have found that person, they aren't looking at you anymore. The problem is breaking into any field is extremely difficult now. For me, I had to start off with some less than optimal pay. Now - I am working fully remote and I was hired into current role because I had the exact qualifications the hiring manager wanted based on prior role. It was hard for me to find this match, many rejections happened during this period as well, even WITH the experience I had. That (being the ideal match) or references is how you can get a job. It's a struggle for sure when you do not have any experience - the hardest part IMO for anyone in their career - but it's also a struggle that hundreds of thousands of people go through and just is a byproduct of there being better alternatives available for the employer. Our system sucks. I think there should be better bridge ways into the employment market and maybe the universities need to partner up with companies that are incentivized to hire in their graduates or something along those lines to level the playing field better for those who are early in their careers. And now with AI entering the picture over the next few years, I think there's going to be some very major problems in the job market as if it wasn't bad enough already.

I suggest you to look it this way: 1. Phase: you interviewing to qualify for the position. 2. Phase is the negotiation phase with HR. They are the ones that pay you. Never negotiate with hiring manager about anything. I can tell you 10/10 the hiring manager is less qualified than you.

I have a suggestion: have you considered being more niche in your skill set? Right now, I'm studying the ServiceNow platform and they are growing fast. With your credentials, you can practically start in the enterprise tech industry more than you would with these recruiters. Also I saw in an article recently that Salesforce is hiring sales reps, as they are growing too. With their craving of sales reps, Salesforce is gonna need people to be developers and administrators. It may not be your cup of tea, but it beats sitting in the same tech highway that every other tech person is on right now. Plus, since you are a problem solver, perhaps taking a look into QA work, as it is practically recession proof. Just a suggestion. Thanks for reading my comment.

the biggest issue is most jobs/companies don't change their pay at all or enough for the adjustment of COL - that's the biggest #1 issue. The elephant in the room is the few jobs that DO pay decent/well are higher echelon management jobs that not only require the skillset, which cool, awesome. But they require 8-10+ years of "experience" and in the end, its an hourly rate/salary that should be given in todays inflation rates. But there isn't enough jobs that pay a livable wage compared to that local population. So many are screwed. It's all math, not enough good paying jobs for the masses.

I will tell you why you have such experience with recruiters. The reason for this is because recruiters source their own candidates. They usually have about 46 days to fill a role and even though it sounds like a long enough time to do so, a recruiter will simply never fill-in a role by waiting for the "perfect" candidate to apply for the role. Within the first 1-2 weeks the recruiter needs 5 candidates for the hiring manager to review and eventually do interviews with them. Most of the time, a recruiter and a hiring manager already know someone who they want to hire and it's highly possible that this person is not any of these 5 candidates or any candidate that applied specifically for the role. The interviewing part is just a courtesy.

@michealcoleyoung
@michealcoleyoung Ай бұрын
No offense taken. You are correct in a few of your observations. You mentioned that I come off very snarky and entitled and I can see exactly why you would think that given my attitude in the video. What you are seeing is my frustration with the process of finding employment in todays job market because it would seem I've made no progress at all despite ANY of the efforts I've made and experience I've gained in the past 6 years. When it comes to submitting applications, I will admit that I have applied for jobs where the role may have been a little out of my league but not so out of my league that I wasn't willing to at least take a chance on the basis of realizing that I checked off a few boxes in terms of what they were looking for. For example, for the jobs that might be a little out of my league my take is this, if I am able to get at least 70% or more of what is required in the job description, I'm still going to apply even if there is a crucial 30% that their looking for that carries the most weight among those requirements. This is to say that despite the fact that they really want me to have that 30% I'm still going to apply anyway because I have 70% of the other things they are looking for. Now, for any job that I apply to whether it be within my league or out of it, do I believe I am entitled to it? Absolutely not. And as far as senior roles go I never ever apply to those because I know I am a long way from that. I am a Junior Developer at best and I am honest and upfront about that fact with employers and anyone else for that matter. On the topic of honesty, we often hear people say "fake it until you make it" and I have always despised that saying because I've taken it literally for so many years. Because I know that if I claim to be an opera singer when I am really just a rock singer someone is going to find out real quick and then I'm going to be exposed. Instead, I've adopted the saying "know it and then show it" because if I truly know how to do something I should be able to prove this by showing or teaching someone how to do the thing I claim I know how to do. The catch is to have an opportunity to be able to show it and that is where most of my frustration lies. Regarding finding work. Is there a good possibility that the reason why I am not able to find work in my field is simply because of me? You bet, but so far in an effort to solve the issue of what I think I might be doing wrong I have found that it's been a fruitless endeavor. This comes with taking into consideration what I think I am doing wrong along with what others in the field have suggested I might be doing wrong as well. But what it boils down to is this. There is always a perceived problem and then there is the real problem. What I am looking for is the real problem. I would love nothing more than for someone to rain absolute hellfire criticism down on me to account for exactly what I am doing wrong so I can improve and make progress. However, this hasn't happened yet and that ties into some of my frustration. What makes this even more interesting now vs a few years ago is now I see an abundance of people on LinkedIn every other day sharing similar stories like mine to the point where I can't help but acknowledge that the landscape has totally changed and not for the better. I see folks who are way above me in terms of qualifications sharing stories about how they are on day 320 (just giving a random high number to illustrate my point here) of trying to find employment in the same field but still no luck. Now sure, I run through the same round of questions like anyone else when it comes to wanting to know why they haven't landed a job yet. But to see this massive group of folks sharing similar stories to mine only confirms that there is more than meets the eye to this issue.

I think it’s the worsening of the job market. People that I knew from 2010+ up until 2015 would find jobs (they’d bitch sometimes about how it took them 6 months or a year but it’s wasn’t nearly how it is now). These people have careers now and seem comfortable where they are. I started my journey in 2015, and while at the time I wasn’t prepared for the job market, as I was developing, I still wouldn’t get anywhere, and now it’s like 9 years of experience of everything - from skill, to resume writing, to tailoring to interview skills to softskills to volunteering and doing free work, and also internships that I’ve done a few, and still am approached sometimes to do an unpaid internship. Like I just know at this point that it’s not me I think a lot of times people don’t understand. In 2017 I was doing an internship at a place and I was complaining about the job market (which wasn’t nearly as bad as it is now) and I’d been told that this is the way it is, and that I need credentials and formal education , and that “I’m not suffering”, or whatever. Or I’d say that I’d applied to 1500 job ads and people would say that it’s my resume or something like that. Right now I do seasonal work, so I get jobs but I never know when my next one is going to be, and I was talking about it with my roommate that I’m done applying to corporations because of how it’s not worth it (literally), and she was like “well, what if you have to/have no other option” I’m like it doesn’t matter if I have no options. Like i don’t think people understand that applying just to feel better about yourself doesn’t solve the issue. Also I was talking (I have 2 therapists, from a different country), about my employment situation, and one of them was like “well you’ve figured it out, you are able to support yourself. You’ll be able to do it again if something happens in the industry/the world” and id be like “I wouldn’t be so sure about it”. Another one said straight to my face “well what are you going to do when your parents die”. It just pissed me off. Like this is literally what I go to therapy for. Like she just doesn’t want to understand. Like having no options doesn’t solve the problem. Just because you’ve exhausted all options doesn’t mean that you’ll magically come up with insights . There’s a lot of projection of laziness and lacking accountability
