Thank you so much, I'm very happy you love it! Omg I think the Ben deep dive is what I'll personally consider my most 'important' video-- but I've been putting it off because it'll be a lot, and I think I need to re-watch Lost first just to make sure I'm not misremembering any details 😭 It will get done sooner or later though, I promise!

This is amazing!!! Like a lot of work put into it. I’m glad people are still as obsessed with lost as I am. I’ve ranted for years your same rant at the beginning of the video. You’re really creative, I loved how all of this you made just for fun, but by all means it was not so simple to make. You’re really sweet, such a nerd, passionate, creative, fun. Now I’m afraid I have to watch the whole series again!!! I wish this park was real

Thank you so much! Lost is a fantastic show and it had a renaissance in recent years, I think. Omg I almost didn't include that rant because I didn't think it fit the video...but those misconceptions bother me so much, so I couldn't bring myself to cut it, and I'm happy that you've ranted about the same things hahaha! Yeah, I had a lot of time in my hands when I came up with the concept and did most of the visuals (it was THAT time of 2020) but it was all really fun to make. Aww thanks for all the compliments, very sweet of you to say that! Ha, enjoy your re-watch! And yeah it would be a lot of fun if the park was real!

What a nice video! There are some good ideas in there, I love your attention to detail! I like the visuals you made 😀 (Shout-out to "You and the Black Smoke" at 20:28 that made me laugh.) And thank you for the little section at the beginning where you talk about some story misconceptions, ugh 😖

Thank you! Glad you like the ideas, details and visuals! Ahahaha that Black Smoke moment was begging for an illustration, I had to do it! Omg I almost didn't include the part with the misconceptions because I felt that it didn't fit the video😭And it doesn't really fit tbh, but I couldn't bring myself to cut it, the Lost misconceptions bother me so much! So thank you for appreciating that, now I'm happy that I included it!

Thank you for creating this video! I never realized how many things I had missed or overlooked about Leland’s character. I especially loved you bringing up how he was mocking the sacraments and all his interpersonal relationships outside of Kristen and Sheryl. Ohh also I loved that you highlighted the jake stuff, that Kristen threw in his face in season 1, he took to subverting those things so he’s in control of the outcomes now. It’s all very as above so below, and just adds another layer. Just a fantastic video, thank you for all the effort you put into this. Running to follow you on Twitter now to hear your season 4 takes!

You're so welcome omg, thanks for the lovely comment! Yeah, one of my main reasons for wanting to make a video essay about Leland was that I noticed there were people missing a lot of really interesting things about the character-- so I'm very glad I was able to talk about some things you had overlooked! Oh the mocking of the sacraments is one of my favorite things about the character, filming that section was so much fun! So I'm happy you loved it! The Jake stuff is very important to me too, I think it's fascinating how he subverts all of that (although I question if the writers are aware of some of it or it's all a freaky coincidence). Ohhh the concept of "as above, so below" definitely fits this, that never occurred to me! Great observation! Thank you for enjoying the video so much! Omg I haven't really followed anyone on Twitter, I'm sorry, but I hope you liked my season 4 takes! They were...not the most positive of takes lol but Leland is always fantastic.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you found it so well done! Yeah the volume matching is a pretty easy thing to fix in the future, tbh I just didn't think anyone would mind since the interview bits are so short hahaha but yes definitely an easy fix going forward!

4:30h Wow! Its always impressive to watch a video essay that complete and with so much effort. All the more on a character from a less popular show like this. A nice gift to the Evil community! What an interesting and insightful exploration of Lelands mind! Your analysis is on point imo It was a good idea to incorporate things that Michael Emerson said in interviews, I find he usually has an accurate understanding of the characters he plays so it's always nice to hear what he has to say. I also liked that you put some trivia throughout the video (like at 2:51:38 for example) and that you talked about deleted scenes and how they fit/don't fit the characters. The meta commentary about fandom,etc was a nice touch too. I'm sorry I wish I could talk more about specific things from the video but I forgot what I wanted to say (Also yeah he def chose the pig avatar on because of his sigil) I just have little unsollicited advice, If I may suggest something for future videos pay attention to the sound volume normalization. Your voice was kinda low so I had to turn my sound volume all the way up and sometimes when clips from interviews came up I got jumpscared because it was louder lol.

Thank you so much for such an in-depth comment! I'm very glad you found the video essay so complete and that you agree with my analysis of Leland! I think sometimes people miss details about him or they're not too insightful about him, so I had a lot I wanted to say haha! I agree, I find that Michael Emerson has excellent understanding of his own characters, so he's one of those actors whose thoughts hold weight imo. Hahaha I happened to have a lot of trivia in my head, and this show has some great deleted scenes and an interesting fandom, so I'm happy you liked that aspect of the essay too! That's alright, thanks for watching and commenting! (Omg yes! I never hear anyone talk about the connection between the avatar and the sigil, but I feel that it has to be an intentional choice!) Unsolicited advice is totally fine! Hahaha I noticed that the interviews were louder, but tbh since they take up maybe 5 minutes of a 4 and a half hours video (and the loudest one is like a minute maybe), I didn't think anyone would mind; I assumed they would just...turn down the volume a bit if they found it too too loud, because that's what I would've done. Didn't mean to jumpscare you lol, my bad! It's definitely an easy thing to fix in the future, though, so thanks!

A more detailed breakdown of each section [Leland Townsend: when evil is empowering and charming, a deep dive into and character analysis]: Intro - How one might describe Leland Townsend, why he’s a crucial part of the show, how we rely on him to move the plot forward and be our window into the psychology of the other characters plus our guide to the demonic world, and how he charmed the audience into becoming a fan favorite. Also, this section sets up what this deep dive will cover. 1 - I explore Leland’s personality, the way each of his many traits combine to shape the character as a whole, and the role that each trait plays in his professional success, as well as the traits that resonate the most with the audience. 2 - An in-depth look at who Leland was growing up as Jake Perry, how he had done nothing wrong back then, and why the cruelty of the world led him to seek out the path of evil to empower himself. Also how his current personality and schemes are direct responses to traumas he suffered as Jake. 2.1 - How the anger and trauma of a past that belittled him led him to seek out demons: but why demons, specifically? That’s what we explore here. I also talk about two theories of when he might have changed his life/name from Jake to Leland, and why one theory claims it was three years ago and the other eleven. 3 - The whole lore of The Sixty with their mission statement and rituals, why they exist and how their hierarchy works, everything we know about Anatas, plus a few musing on how Leland might have joined the team and what, exactly, his original deal with the devil was. I also explore the idea of demons having spheres of influences and why Leland fits Anatas’ House well, and unravel the clues as to why he’s probably the Head of his House. 3.1 - I talk about how much The 60 improved Leland’s life, and so the logical leap is that he sees joining them as a good thing because it is empowering to all. And I touch on the idea of why he might genuinely think that the world will improve if Lucifer wins, and that people are at their best when they’re evil. 4 -- An in-depth look into Le’s job and all of his many professional responsibilities: recruiter, therapist, forensic psychologist, company boss etc, and how all of these intertwine with his overarching mission of making the world an eviler place. I also take a look at some of his most corrupting schemes. 4.1 -- I explore the different techniques and manipulation tactics that he employs to corrupt each individual, highlighting how he uses someone’s personality as a way in, twists that personality and encourages specific bad behavior to corrupt them, and how he tailors his technique depending on who the target is. We’ll look at LeRoux, Malindaz, Kurt, Sebastian, Father Mullhevil, cann1bal kid, main characters David, Sheryl, Kristen and the four Ls. 5 -- I do my best to answer this question (“does he have true faith in the devil?”) by comparing the stereotypical Satanism that Leland portrays to others when he’s performing, versus how he speaks about Lucifer with his allies, to gauge how he actually feels about the devil and his endgame. Because there’s a difference between selling your soul for power and going through the motions, and selling your soul and then being actually invested in the demonic mission. So I take a look at whether Leland has true faith in the devil, in a religious sense, or he’s just in it for the perks and power. And I analyze his offended and angry reaction to the New Ministry of Satan (from psychological and religious standpoints) and why he had such a visceral dislike to Satan’s name being appropriated-- it is very telling of where his real beliefs lie. Finally, I quickly compare his religious views to some of the real life “devil-based” religions and practices. 6 - I take a look at what is the ultimate Christian endgame (heaven on Earth) and how The Sixty’s plan is to bring about the same endgame, except that tailored to their devilish side, drawing a parallel of hell on Earth. What were the clues in the show that told us that an apocalyptic demonic revolution is their desired endgame? 7 -- This is probably my favorite section! Leland has a habit of always subverting or inverting Catholic rituals and sacraments, so here we take a look at why he does that, why opposite rituals can be unholy, and I deep-dive into which sacraments he has subverted and how. I compare the original Catholic rites to Leland’s twisted version, explaining why he made the changes and what each of them mean in his theology. 8 - Leland is human, but sometimes he exhibits characteristics that appear to be supernatural. I take a look into each, and attempt to offer an explanation by filling in the blanks with theories based on real life occult lore and practices. Could Le have an extra magical boon? From glamours to astral projecting, to glitching technology and maybe even healing. Then I talk about his exorcism. From preparing his apartment to turning the entire process into a cheeky comedy that he didn’t take seriously. Finally, I do my best to explain how he was not classically possessed and what was up with that blood bath undoing the exorcism, by exploring the theories of demonic energies lingering and being around/in a body that is not actually possessed. Plus I touch on the idea of the devil having a literal mark on his soul as an energetic thing, like a facet of traditional witchcraft. 9 - I try to take a look at aspects of Leland’s interpersonal relationships that are not always as obvious to the audience (though perhaps most of them should be), plus I talk about some dynamic ideas that I think would be interesting if explored in upcoming seasons. Also, there’s the idea that Le is the Satan to other characters, in the sense that “Satan” originally meant “the adversary”. 10 -- A discussion on why redemption is highly unlikely but not impossible for Le. I dissect this by taking a look into the rare moments where Leland expresses vulnerability and a desire for human connection. And, a talk on Catholic forgiveness, some apocryphal and biblical texts (of Mary visiting hell, and that one time Jesus went to hell and released everyone) and how that relates to Leland’s possible redemption. Plus how the repentance tenet applies to the universe of “Evil”. 11 - I discuss some of the writing inconsistencies in the show, some more impactful loose threads (ie the plan with the Demon Goat Therapist that disappeared) and some fun ones (like the mystery of the Star Wars boxers or the person in the burlap sack). Also I slowly lose my mind over retcons; some smaller and some big ones, at least in the way that I interpreted them. 12 - A look into why Leland can’t fail on an individual scale and on his overall mission. On an individual scale, how does one stop him without getting their hands dirty, when dirtying their hands is Leland’s goal to begin with? And, for the overarching mission, I discuss how the apocalypse is God’s biblical endgame, therefore it must be fated to happen someday in the universe of ‘Evil’. 13 - Theorizing on how Leland’s baby son will play a role in the grand scheme of things, with some antichrist and ‘Lexis the ambassador’ ideas thrown in. Also brief speculation on how Le will feel about the baby, plus making a case as to why the baby should be a normal human unless we get a good explanation as to why he’s exhibiting demonic characteristics. (also-I forgot to say this but I am hoping so hard that the baby’s name will start with an L!) 14 -- What does Le think will happen to him in the afterlife? We don’t know his thoughts, but I have my own theory! And, based on real life lore/the idea of spirit helpers, I discuss why I’m sure Leland will have a place of honor in hell after he d1es. 15 -- A dive into different fan responses to Leland. We touch back on a few previously discussed topics, but this time from the perspective of how the audience reacts to them. Why Le’s humor lands or doesn’t, why he feels more consistent than other characters, why he has dedicated and loyal stans, possible criticism of the character, how the show capitalizes on his fan fav status, and what are the most popular Leland ships within the Evil fandom. I may not take a single breath this entire section, and sorry that some of it was said while I was moving around a bit, it’s because I was so desperate to finish filming! Final thoughts - Some musings on the nature of good and evil, and free will. Plus I pitch you my The 60 spin-off, briefly discuss a possible ending for the show, and reiterate some of my main points. Sorry about whatever happened with the lighting here! Hope you enjoyed this slightly unhinged deep dive into our charming Dr. Leland Townsend and his empowering brand of evil!

The names of Capitol citizens are all of Latin origin and names ending in anus are very common. Sejanus is pronounced Suh-jay-nus, so the same way as Coriolanus.
@loreandlight
@loreandlight Жыл бұрын
That's interesting about the pronunciation, because my first language is actually latin-based and we would say it as Suh-jAH-nus/CorioLAHnus, both in our own language and in Latin. 'A' in Latin is 'ah' for us. I think the letter 'a' sounding like 'ay' is the more English reading of even the original Latin tbh; because, if I'm not mistaken, in English speaking countries there was a change from how Latin was originally pronounced. Or something like that fkashash. But that's actually so cool to know that Latin names with the anus ending are common, it definitely explains a lot, so thank you! I appreciate finding out about this! <3

@@loreandlight I guess that is how you would pronounce it in a Latin-based language, so the pronounciationthat sounds correct to me is based on an Anglicised version of Latin. Nobody knows how Latin was actually pronounced though, so I guess either way is fine.

So I planned to debut this channel with some kind of well-researched video essay on a character or show I love-- but instead we get this improvised, last minute messy trailer breakdown with poor lighting while I was super sick ahahahaskfhasa. Honestly, I just really needed to speak about "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" because I was excited about Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray, so hopefully you'll enjoy this trailer breakdown even under the less-than-ideal circumstances! Future videos will improve! <3
