Excellent presentation! Thank you very much for this insight, we women have and continue to be seen as mere objects, property of the deeply ingrained patriarchy, and history as you wisely said, has always been seen and written through the eyes and ideology of men. Hers is indeed a sad story, of a brave child who was sold by her own mother, who learned to adapt to the circumstances pushed on her through no fault of her own in order to survive. It's easy to assume that she was, as it has always been portrayed, besotted by this white man, that she gave herself to him of her own free will and loved him; just as easy as it is nowadays to say that a woman who is raped 'asked for it', or 'liked it', or 'brought it upon herself', as always that narrative is held up and continuously supported by men, the misogyny runs deep even in history.

Her reasoning is because Cortes was a man, womanizer, disobeyed orders from Diego, gave King Carlos first person accounts we can't believe him. She went into a bizarre series of questions about why certain things would happen. In any event, those contemporary writings by him hold far more weight than her research 400+ years after the fact. The professors arguments are weak. Our understanding her as a traitor is justified.

Your counterargument is weak, so I wouldn't throw stones in a glass house.
@CatherineGordon-n6z3 ай бұрын
You've also misrepresented Dr. Arjona's points in your comment. She didn't say that those were reasons to discount Cortés. She actually said that the only information we have on La Malinche comes from the conquistadors since she was silenced by them and thus was unable to speak for herself. The reason we shouldn't believe Cortés is that he enslaved and sexually assaulted countless women, among his other atrocities. Why should we believe that she loved him when he stole her freedom and kept her from using her voice in any ways that didn't directly benefit him? Why should we call her a traitor and not a victim? Dr. Arjona defended her stance, so now it's time for you to defend yours.
@beforeyourimmigrants84713 ай бұрын
@@CatherineGordon-n6zI did no such thing. History is what is written, not conjecture. The contemporary writings and primary sources of people, like Cortez, during the actual time these events occurred are far more accurate than the research of a PhD student born in the 1960s. Something I didn't bring up is that she claims that it was other Indians, not a few hundred Spainards, who defeated the Aztecs. However, somehow Malinche was not one of those traitors? Everyone misunderstood Malinche for the past few centuries? This whole revisionist history of Malinche is something that modern academics in the United States is pushing. Also Cortes was not transferring responsibility to Malinche making her a scapegoat in the eyes of the King of Carlos. That's absurd. It demonstrates a lack of understanding of the Kingdoms military. Our understanding of Malinche as a traitor is on point.

Oooh Mario, I bet ur Mom loved ur Papel Picado!. I am making one in 1:12 scale for my miniature Mexican Cantina diorama which will include an Altarcito display w/ Ofrindas. I found ur vid 1st on Grace Museum website. Watched ur vid- switched to KZbin, tracked ur tutorial down so I could enlarge it, & paused & started it a bunch of times to learn. I began w/ 8"x8". Now that I learned - I'm ready to try my teeny tiny 1:12 scale version. Would send u a pic, but not sure where to send. Thanks for walking us slowly & diligently thru this. Do u have other classes? I'd love🧡to learn to make paper Flor de Muertos for my diorama too. Thanks & u need to wear white linen all the time- suits u well ! 🙂(wish me Blessings on my teeny Papel Pacado attempts).

I must be running on Chicana time because I'm barely catching this. Congratulations to Mark Torres for 25 years of breaking down the brown sound barriers placed on our community. Travel Tips for Aztlan offered countless talent the opportunity to be heard loud and clear. I thank you for your support as a member of the Chicano/a/x poetry scene of the 90's/2000's. The guest spots were always a blast. The short-term intern gig I had will always be a highlight and a check off my bucket list. Your friendship is always treasured. Bravo to Abelardo as well for the decades of support and for getting the information on shows, performances, exhibitions within the Chicano/a/x Latino community out into the hands of the masses.

Thank you Milena for hosting Steve DeBro to discuss the making of 18th and Grand and how it came to be. So many fond memories came flooding back when I watched the documentary! I grew up on the CA Central Coast 2 1/2 hours from LA, but thanks to early cable TV, was able to watch boxing, wrestling, and roller derby from the Olympic Auditorium on KCOP and KTLA in the mid 1960’s to mid 1970’s. The Olympic to me at the time was a mystical place, I never got an opportunity to attend an event there, but Steve’s documentary tells the amazing story of the place, the people, and it made me as a viewer feel like I was there during that incredible era. I’m so thankful 18th and Grand forever preserves the rich history of the Olympic and those times in Los Angeles.
