Hello, I sadly don't know enough about IELTS to have any tips for you. But generally whenever you have an exam the best is to solve as many excercises and old exams as possible. Also, as what you will be tested on is a language, make sure to talk a lot and listen a lot to that language:) I hope I could still help you a little!

Hei! First of all thank you for commenting & asking :) So I honestly don't quite know how the procedure is to get to the ETHZ or what you need to achieve in order to enter, as it works differently if you enter directly from Switzerland. For the extracurriculars... you mean like something that you can do like a "hobby" to achieve some skills that might help you? If you haven't already I'd suggest to do some german classes. I am not sure how it is for the mechanical engineering BSc but for the food science one we do have quite a lot in german. A few lectures are in english and a few reports have to be written in english as well but there are still a lot of lectures (specially in the beginning) in german and also a lot of report writing in german. Even if mechanical engineering were to be completely in english (which I doubt) I think you would still benefit a lot from knowing german, already just to move around the city and talk to others. I mean most people do talk english in Switzerland but maybe the experience might by different knowing at least a basis of german. Other than that if you really want to do something extra I would recommend to look at the lectures you would have in your first year and maybe prepare for some you think you might need to work on. E.g. if there is something you've never heard about maybe just reading something about it or sth. Also read/inform yourself about the requirements to enter ETHZ from abroad and maybe you find out there is something you mght need to do still. Oh and personally I would have loved to know more about time management.. It's hard to balance having your own household, studying, working and finding time for everything you enjoy doing. So maybe that yould be something I would have liked to know more about before starting. But other than that try to enjoy this time before ETH and don't overload yourself already, ETHZ is hard and you won't have a lot of vacay ;) I hope I could help you somehow!
