Misleading title - not a tutorial. Just an introduction to a 29$ course. I bet it is good and well worth it but you should change the title.

I just bought a standy as a return to riding equestrian. I know there’s a hill ahead of us, but I’m really excited to learn about my new boy and standies in general. Grateful I have some help from seasoned equestrians.

Haven't started the ridden career of my Standardbred. I call him Beau. You called him Diesel or Dinosaur 🦕 Horse. He looks great and has a home for life.

Hi Nic, I have been riding my Standy for 4 years. I have recently upped his dressage training. We can canter quite happily on the left rein, correct lead. I can’t get the correct lead on the right rein. He can do it on the lunge though but is still quite unbalanced. In fact, in the beginning on the lunge his hind right foot would slip out and he would stumble onto his front knees. He is slightly better in the pasoa and side reins. Do you think your course will help? He is quite fit and strong as we do a lot of trail riding. Thanks!

Don't know if you still need help, but sounds like your horse needs an osteopath. My standardbred had mastered canter on the lunge line, but since this activates different muscles and parts of their body, it can cause a lot of physical tension and pain (as well as mental of course)

Thanks for another inspiring video, Nic. I’ve learned so much in your group. Probably the most important thing I’ve learned is to take my time,to really give my boys & girls the space to just be horses, to listen to what they are trying to tell me, & stop putting pressure on myself - & my horses.

OMG I had no idea what I was getting into with this - pretty new to horses and definitely new to Standardbreds :) My first event I went to a few years ago was a 20km endurance training ride about 3.5 hours in the float. What I didn't realise at the time was my horse had previously been trucked and not floated - was an awful trip!!! My poor horse was so stressed in the float. I'd volunteered at this ride the year before and it was a good size (read small) so I thought it would be a good first event. Problem was that year was not a normal year and the year I went - about 150 horses! We ended up with a small spot to camp (yard big enough for my horse to turn around) and it was at the end of the ride track so the endurance riders were coming in at a canter or gallop past my horses's yard. I had rearing, calling out, awesome giraffe impersonations - I ended up in tears. But he made it through the vet check perfectly, was an absolute angel on the ride (he had something to do) and because I was riding with a buddy he was happy. We completed the ride in 4 hours and passed the vet check. The next ride, he was a little less anxious and by the third ride he was an old hand :) Then we had a break and last year I only did one ride - and we had to ride out on our own, and he did not like that one bit. I swear he paced for the first 3kms and in the end the only way I could get him to go was to tack on behind a couple of other horses and basically just follow them - he stuck like glue! We vetted out lame on that ride (he slipped on a rock and twisted his knee) but I was stoked as the rest of the vet parameters were top marks - considering we did the ride in 3hrs 26 minutes in really harsh terrain and with a super stressed horse, it was amazing. I think one of the mistakes I have made in the past is not riding him around the showground/camp and the beginning of the track (we can ride the first few kms to warm up) prior to the ride to help him settle and get used to the surroundings. I'm hoping to do our first 20km ride for the year in the next few weeks so I plan to get there on the Saturday and let him settle in, go for a short ride in the afternoon and then do the 20km ride on the Sunday morning. A few friends are going to (hopefully) so we will have a riding buddy - I find my horse lacks self confidence on his own and feels much safer with a buddy - I hope to work up to riding on our own however initially, I think we need to at least be with one other horse until he gets used to it.
