Hey, kid. I know crap about how to navigate to podcasts, or how to dial into Letterbox, but I did find my way here. I'm gonna stay tuned in while I clean up the kitchen and get ready for the Olympics opening night. Just wanted to let cha' know that I'mma LISTENIN' n' LEARNIN'. Never heard of this film before. Maybe it's because I started teaching that year and couldn't focus on movies AND bad ass undergrads. BUT I'M LISTENIN'....

Nearly stopped watching the review when you hated on the lynch version, In some ways it’s still better than the new version for me.

I grew up loving the Lynch version, believe it or not. I also grew up thinking the Adam West version of Batman was amazing. Then June 23, 1989 happened, and I realized that new versions can surpass old ones, like Adam West had done with the Robert Lowry and Lewis Wilson versions of Batman, which doesn't diminish the older ones, just enhance their uniqueness to their time period. The kid in me will always love the 1984 version because of how it made me feel at the time, for the sake of nostalgia. the middle-aged me sees how the newer versions built upon the foundations laid out by Herbert and Lynch and appreciates a more director's vision centered approach where the studio isn't restricting the creativity of the auteur. Also, If you get a chance, check out the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, about the unproduced mid-1970's version that would have changed cinema if made. Some of the ideas found their way into Jodorowsky and Moebius's comic The Incal, and influenced countless creators, notably Luc Besson and The Fifth Element.

How do you guys not know that George Lucas directly ripped off Dune?
@wingthomaux

That’s like saying high Fantasy Autors are ripping off Lord of the Rings

@@wingthomaux Lucas actually admitted to it. Everything has inspiration. I get that. There's still a point where so much is lifted from ones source that it is ripping something off. No one's own the hero's journey or using folklore as inspiration. What Lucas did was more akin to writing a summary and then rearranging some things, followed by missing the point.

@@wingthomaux just for reference I usually defend authors when they're accused of ripping off someone's story. This is a case that I happen to find indefensible.

@@keturahspencer I don’t see the it tbh. There is nothing in Star Wars where I would say that it’s a copy or ripping off dune. I understand that Lucas took inspiration from different movies/genres, threw it together and put a admittedly pretty basic story on top of it, but that I wouldn’t say he ripped off anything.

@@wingthomaux George Lucas has a bad habit of taking too much direct inspiration from other writers. The movie Willow is another example. It actually did take too much from Tolkien. I still like Willow, but it obvious on re-watch. Conserning Star Wars and Dune, it's not a basic story. You just grew up with Star Wars so it's been normalized to you. I'm not talking about the Heroes Journey aspect. I'm talking about lifting world building. Herbert himself noticed 16 aspects that were too similar in his opinion and there are entire videos on KZbin should you decide to look them up. One or two would be homage or coincidence, but they add up.

I want Kyle Mclaughlin to have a cameo somewhere in this series so much! Glad you enjoyed it. The books are definitely worth it. If you need helps with the lore Quinn's Ideas is probably the best Dune channel. I think Alt shift x also has some good content.

On another note. You guys talk down about Henry snitching. If either of you were in his shoes, you would have talked when he got pinched for the smokes when he was a kid, and you definitely would have talked for the 10 yr bid. You say you wouldnt have talked or the maybe you would have eventually walked away? Tell me again how you would have walked away after years of watching Paulie Vario, Jimmy Burke and Tommy Desimone commit crime after crime. They would have clipped him if he left and its as simple as that. He was not a great guy dont get me wrong.....but dont act like you would do something differently or that you are tougher in some way. The only time you have a right to talk about a 🐀 is when you've looked down the barrel at 25 to life and told the cops to go f×ck themselves. Until then you should have a little sympathy for a guy that got involved woth a bunch of people he shouldnt have been involved with. You cant pick where you grow up.

Bro how can you say what someone else would do or know what they've been through. Sure I know a lot of people would be scared, but you don't know what people have been through or have done in their life. I don't think most people woulda snitched about the cigarettes if they were willing to be in thst life. Now all the other stuff maybe

The reason the resteraunt owner wanted Paulie to take over the restaurant was for this reason. The Lucchese's weren't muscling the owner for protection money because the guy let them drink and eat for free. Once he approached Tommy about his bill he was null in void to the Lucchese's. Jimmy gave the green light for the crew to target the business for a shake down do to the owner disrespecting the crew. He went to Paulie and asked him to take over because Tommy was gonna become a 51% owner if not. Thats how it works when the mob shakes you down. They explain it later when Paulie takes ober what would have happened eventually if Tommy would have taken over the only thing the giy did was saved his own life. If Tommy took over he would have killed the guy after he busted the joint out if he was running place.
