What is MediGap?

Hello. Medigap insurance, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is a type of private health insurance that is designed to fill in the gaps left by Original Medicare. As mentioned earlier, it helps cover your out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Mutual of Omaha is the WORST. They routinely close the book on blocks of business. This locks many of the current plan holders in that block into soaring premiums. If you cannot pass underwriting, you are trapped in this premium spiral. Mutual of Omaha is the WORST. Don't get lock into this ripoff!

We have AARP/UnitedHealthcare Plan G Medigap plan and, while these Medigap plans are not cheap, they're worth every penny, especially if you are hospitalized. Prior authorizations are a HUGE SCAM - patients should NOT have any care delayed because of some insurance company's prior authorization requirement!!! I've NEVER agreed with prior authorizations which is why we went with a Medigap plan. BTW, this video is basically a commercial for Mutual of Omaha.

I recently created a video around the pitfalls of Medicare Advantage plans and prior authorizations. I believe your statement is spot on, Medigap costs more but provides far superior coverage and eliminates prior authorizations! Unfortunately, most people have no understanding of prior authorizations until they actually experience them firsthand.

Have you compared the cost of your plan through AARP VS your plan without AARP?

I like my Plan HDG ($34) for the incentive to stay healthy. Plan G has no incentive for me.

Good for you. You are still way a ahead of the game, especially when compared to a Medicare Advantage plan. Knowledge is power!

Howdy! Thanks for commenting. Obamacare is funded through taxes and subsidies, Medigap plans are not built that way. You pay a premium to the insurance company, no taxes or subsidies are involved.

Guaranteed Issue Rights don't apply to switching Advantage plans. Advantage enrollees are free to switch Advantage plan companies annually during Annual and Open Enrollment as it is now, with no medical underwriting, even if the enrollee just wants a different Advantage plan. Guaranteed Issue applies in certain situations to those enrolling in Medicare Supplements outside their initial enrollment period.

That is correct, however, the general public is normally not aware of that. In that part of the video, I simply wanted to let folks know that they can switch plans seamlessly without diving deep into the GI rights.

Although the maximum allowable out-of-pocket for Advantage plans can be as high as $8850, in many cases that can be less, depending on where you live. For example, where I live, annual max out-of-pocket for Advantage plans will usually be between $5000 and $7500. A Medigap Plan G will not have those limits, as you correctly point out. Just the small annual Part B deduction. But most Advantage plans are zero premium with zero deductible, whereas you may pay between $1500-$3500 annually for premiums for Plan G. Still lower than Advantage maximum out-of-pocket, but that is money you will spend regardless of need, whereas for Advantage you might have to spend up to whatever the annual maximum is. For many services, Advantage plans have a fixed dollar amount copay, rather than a percentage of allowable charges.

Thanks for commenting. I agree with your line of thinking - the greatest problem is many Advantage plans now require you to pay 20% for things like chemotherapy. So it's of utmost importance to understand not only what copays you have, but which areas DO NOT have a copay and require a percentage.
