Can they even swallow them?
@StuffISawOutside14 күн бұрын
a great blue heron can definitely eat a fish bigger than this one. (they can swallow fish almost as big as their bodies.) but armored catfish like this seem like they have particularly spiky and rough bodies, and i often see discarded whole armored catfish carcasses near ponds. so i'm not sure if that's fishermen leaving them behind or herons giving up while trying to eat them. i didn't stick around long enough to see whether this heron was successful or gave up eating the fish.
@Cillana14 күн бұрын
@StuffISawOutside I meant specifically armored catfish. Their pectoral fins are very sturdy and they have a mechanism to lock thir dorsal fin into place when it is sticking straight up.
@StuffISawOutside13 күн бұрын
there's at least one video in KZbin that shows a Great Blue Heron successfully swallowing an Armored Catfish after stabbing it many times. my bird here seemed to be following the same method. if the Catfish can be successfully swallowed, i just hope they don't cause problems once inside or on the way out. (that would be a harder lesson to learn.)

I didn't expect any armoured catfish to appear in Texas, but I wouldn't be surprised since there have been countless invasive species everywhere you look, like the monk parakeets and Agama lizards, Cuban anoles from Florida to TX

we've got mostly Sailfin Armored Catfish (Plecos) like this one here. but they are quite abundant, and i'm sure other Armored Catfish species will show up one day.

Holy cow I did not think it would throw that ant so fast!
@StuffISawOutside26 күн бұрын
i was surprised by that, too. apparently, antlions liquify and suck out the insides of the ants, leaving the exoskeleton. but since i'd never noticed any skeletons around the pits, i had always assumed the ants were eaten whole. so i was surprised when the dead ant rose out of the bottom of the pit and started moving around a bit. i thought maybe the ant was still alive, but then it went flying. so that's when i learned that antlions throw out the leftover carcasses of their meals.
