Short and fast. Very fast, and too fast for me! I wonder how many other newbies like me found this too fast and were too polite to let anyone know? It's a great tutorial, but kinda hard to keep up with. I even found it hard keeping up with the mouse movements, flying around all over the place as they were.

Hi! I'm glad you didn't give up on KiCad just because of my video. :D The quick pace is intentional. Don't forget that KZbin's has a "slow motion" feature. Also, FYI this video made for KiCad 5. Now that KiCad 6 has been released (with many additions and changes), it may be better to hunt for a more recent tutorial that covers KiCad 6.

Very well done. I'm a long time Orcad and Pads user and these are strikingly close to both, which is great. This tutorial was presented well for mid level users and above, not needing to cover the already known basics of schematic capture and pcb layout.

How does KiCad from 5 years ago look much better than the latest version? How did you get dark mode on there?
@WindsorSchmidt
@WindsorSchmidt 4 жыл бұрын
What OS are you using? For this video, I had patched the source code to change KiCad's appearance, but these days I'm just using the officially released binaries. I'm running a Linux desktop with the "Materia-dark" GTK theme, and KiCad automatically picks up the system's chosen color theme. Currently, my KiCad 5.1.9 looks like this: imgur.com/a/5EzPmrH
@regal_7877
@regal_7877 4 жыл бұрын
@@WindsorSchmidt Wow that actually looks really nice. I'm on Windows. I found a few themes on github where you have to replace certain part of the config files to change the appearance. Mine looks better now, but still don't have a dark theme for the launcher and stuff like that. It's fine though, I'll wait for KiCad 6 later this year. I hear they're changing the config file format to JSON so it'll be easier to customize themes and stuff.
@WindsorSchmidt
@WindsorSchmidt 4 жыл бұрын
@@regal_7877 I know the config files allow changing layer colors, but I think the UI will still follow the system theme. In Windows you may still have a light theme, but I dunno. Come back and let us know after KiCad 6 drops! :D
@regal_7877
@regal_7877 4 жыл бұрын
@@WindsorSchmidt Will do. I'm not a complete newbie at customizing JSON files since I do it a lot with vscode. When KiCad 6 is out, if I manage to get a nice theme going maybe I'll even upload it to github and post a link back here for other to try.

How do I solve this problem? Symbol L1 pad ~ Not found in footprint Custom Components:T-68-6 CT.
@WindsorSchmidt
@WindsorSchmidt 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure all of the names of pins on your symbol have corresponding names on your footprint. Probably in your case, your symbol has a pin named "~" but your footprint doesn't have a pad with that name. Typically symbol pins will be named just "1" "2" etc. Also, symbol pins can be marked invisible in the symbol editor, which hides them in Eeschema (schematic editor), so make sure to open your symbol in the symbol editor to be sure. Hope that helps!

Any chance you could make a followup, or recommend another video, for footprints? Particularly, I have a Geiger tube which needs to go into 2 fuse holders to clip the ends. How do I put those 2 holders in as a single part as the footprint, for an oddball like this which doesn't exist in the standard libraries?

I had to stop watching this after less than a minute. I've used KiCAD before and one of the biggest challenges I've found is long term management of libraries especially any custom created parts. HOWEVER this uploader went blithely to create library entry for the STM32 without even checking if one already exists ! BAD move !
@WindsorSchmidt
@WindsorSchmidt 4 жыл бұрын
The ST part in question did not exist in the library on my system at the time, which I knew before making the video. If the part already existed in the library, what would be the point in creating a duplicate symbol for it? On the other hand, demonstrating how the part was *not* in the library wouldn't add much value to this video, unless the very existence of a preexisting library of parts is news to you, which would put you outside of my intended audience here. My intention was to produce a short video for people already familiar enough with other EDA tools to know if/when they need to create a new symbol. Incidentally, if a part you're after does exist in the library, it's still a good idea to check it for consistency with your datasheet, and footprint. Remember when KiCad decided to swap anode and cathode on its diode symbol? lists.launchpad.net/kicad-developers/msg18027.html (not that this sort of thing happens often). It may also be helpful to mention here, that KiCad's symbol library is rapidly expanding, with new parts contributed almost daily! For example, many STM32 parts have been added since I posted this video. GitHub is a good place to hunt for the most recent changes: github.com/KiCad/kicad-symbols

Organized? Were we watching the same "tutorial"? I felt like I was listening to Joe Pesci's character from Lethal Weapon, "Ok, Ok, Ok, nice, cool, Ok, Ok, Ok". I don't have experience with a CAD system like this, so maybe others are moving from something else and could pay attention to what was happening. I thought it was was all over the place and zoomed through one quick thing after another. Disjointed, unprepared. Nothing was really explained. The biggest issue I had was "and then I'll click here and then I'll get that, um, um, and then click this and then I'll do this..." The author needed to say WHAT he was clicking.;"And now I am going to click the library button here at the top and select the option for blah". And with the mouse zooming all over the place I really couldn't see what he was doing. I appreciate him creating the video and the work involved, it just wasn't very well done.

This is not a tutorial it is a demonstration. A tutorial enables the student to be able to complete a task, the pace here is to fast and glosses over the tools being used. Having said that this is a really good demonstration and has been very useful to me in that regard.
