This is true. This year has been Hell for me and my family. I got treatment for Lyme Disease which was awful. Wife was diagonosed with an illness, two family deaths and a death of friend. On top of it all work has been spotty in my area [Union], i can't travel due my ill wife and having 3 boys. But I have manage some side work to keep us afloat. This year is also over. Thank God. I think next year will be much better work-wise and overall hopefully. Stay safe out there, brother.

Shoring is only required after 5 feet. After 5 feet the trench box needs to extend at least 18" above grade .

A strong union is great. A weak union is worse than worthless. Corporate run media will give examples of weak unions to give the impression that all unions are spineless, but that isn't the case. The longshoreman, police, and sprinklerfitter unions are generally great places to work for. Some trucker, plumbing, and carpenter unions are worse than private companies to work for. It all depends.
