If you have a random orbital sander...or I suppose any old jitterbug sander, take a red scotch brite pad and place it on the surface of your jointer, or table saw or band saw, etc. and just sit the sander on top of it, spray that WD-40 on and fire up the sander. Since you aren't using sandpaper, you don't have to worry about sanding low spots into the cast iron and it will shine it up a lot faster and with a lot less effort than using a brush. You don't even need to clamp the pad on as the pressure of your hand on the sander will keep the scotch brite pad in place.

Doing this to one I just bought. Was just trying to get the cutter head out to clean the rust off. During the process I figured out that besides the snap ring on the cutter guard side on the outside of the bearing, that there is also one on the inside that I didn’t see at the beginning. There is also one on the inside of the bearing on the fence side that I did see, but that didn’t make it easier to get out of the groove. Got it out with angle pins in the snap ring pliers. While the bearing on the cutter guard side didn’t have Snapchat rings to actually hold the bearing in place, the other one does on each side. Only had to take the outside one out to get the bearing out. So, there are 2 on the cutter guard side that snap onto the shaft, inside and outside of the bearing. 1 on the other side that snaps onto the shaft on the inside of the bearing, and 2 that hold that bearing into the housing, for a total of 5. Now I’m waiting on new bearings that I had to order online as none of the auto parts stores had any that size. And regarding the bearing, I found a lot of them online that were 35mm OD and 15mm ID, but mine are actually 15.875mm ID, which measured that with calipers and they were marked that. Found them on eBay. Think I have it figured out how to get it back together. I’m going to put the shaft back in from the pulley side, I will have to put the snap ring that goes next to that bearing on and try to keep it between the 2 grooves on the other end so I can insert the shaft a bit, but not too far so I have room for the cutter head to start feeding onto the shaft. Then will have to try and get the snap ring to go past the second groove without snapping into it so the cutter head can keep sliding on the shaft. Then when the shaft starts to come out of the other side of the cutter head, put the next snap ring on and try to keep it out of the first groove, and then get the shaft through the bearing. Sounds like fun. I found out by accident when trying to get it out that if you tap on the shaft long enough that you can get a snap ring out of the groove. That’s how I discovered that snap ring when I saw it land on the floor. So unless I’m missing the easy way to do this, I sincerely hope the poor soul at the factory had some special tools to assemble these. Any if anyone sees this and has figured out the best way to do it, I’m open to suggestions. I’ve stood and stared at it and I don’t think it’s any better sliding the shaft in from the other side. Those inside rings can’t be slid on very far till the cutter head is in position, then basically the cutter head pushes them along the shaft to their final place, but either way has to pass another groove before it gets to the one it belongs in. While proofreading this, it came to me, maybe. I would have to take the pulley off, but not a biggie. Just didn’t because I saw no need to. But, if I wait to put the bearings in till after the shaft, then I should be able to put one snap ring in it’s groove, start the shaft through one bearing hole, start the cutter head on and slide the shaft through till it gets to the other bearing hole and should be able to get the 2nd ring on and past the first groove with the snap ring pliers. Then tap in the bearings and install the last 2 rings. Going to go stare at it for a while and if it looks good go ahead with it. The bearings won’t be here for at least 2 more days, so at least I’d be ready for them. I was a little frustrated with having to wait on the bearings, but sometimes stepping back from a problem for a bit works out better. Sorry for anyone that read all this and knew the whole time this was the way to do it.😣.

@@GraftonCustomWoodworking Thank you. I know I got a bit long winded there, but I think taking the time to write it out helped me come to that, oh yeah, that’s how to do it, moment. Still waiting on the new bearings, should be here in a couple days. But I did get the shaft and cutter head in already and was definitely easier to get the snap rings in place, so looking good so far.

I am definitely using your video to help guide me through the same restoration process. Could you please share where you purchased the replacement parts you found? Belt, pulleys, bearings, etc.? Thank you!!

Liked and subscribed. Nice shop, and much neater than mine. Looks like alot of your stuff is new, so I'm guessing you're just starting out. Best of luck with your endeavors. I made the same scrap cart from WWFMM, the best one I found on the net. He's good, and there are a bunch of other good guys on KZbin, but I'm sure you already know that. I liked everything on the video except your choice of beverage. That stuff will kill you! Good luck and thanks for posting. By the way, I noticed the blue line between the cleats, are you LE? Mark
