Just a metaphor of sex. I mean, sex is a body contact, and touching another person's daemon is essentially a soul contact. Which would make sense for the lovers in Lyra's world to do. In fact, it is explicitly stated in the book that daemon settles after a touch from a loved one. So if your kid comes home one day and their daemon no longer changes, you know exactly what happened.

And while a metaphor for sex like you said, like in the books the dameon will only settle after being touched by a loved one, a loved one, naught a one night stand, or a two week high school boyfriend, a true loved one. Maybe just my idea, I was a senior in high school when "Amber Spyglass" came out (roughly 2001, lord I'm old lol.) and checked it out from the library so many times my family finally broke down and bought me a copy. Yes, the damoen can be touched by someone simply wanting to have sex, but I don't believe if that someone is just a middle school behind the bleachers crush, than their dameon remains unchanged. Which kinda sounds gross when I try and picture 13 year olds getting handsy with each other... I love discussing these books, there are so many insights and discussions to come out of them

A human and a Daemon aren't two separate souls. You have the human, the Daemon and the spirit. The human is the physical body with organs and such, the Daemon is the soul of that human which has part of the humans inner feelings/personality traits and the spirit is the mind with memories for example. They are three pieces of the one being.

@@MoniStomran Yes, i Hope that Lyra will reunite with Will in the book of dust volume three and Malcolm, Nar-Huba, Mary Malone, Iorek, Jamal and Pan will proud for them. So Philip Pullman will write How Dust creates a Daemon when the human Born and so the Daemon of the child of Lyra and Will Is the rabbit in the Honor of Lee ;)

Dust = Original sin, knowledge of good and evil, free will and growing up. Or as Paradise Lost has it _"Mother of science, the power to trace the ways of highest agents, your eyes cleared, life more perfect than fate allows by venturing higher than your lot, to be as gods, wisdom without [God's] leave"_

I have a recurring idea (fictional thought) that Lyra would be the age she is in the Book of Dust series (so early 20s), and through some circumstance, with Malcolm (I've only read the first book of dust, so this might be less feesiable than my ideas already). Anyway, she would get pregnant "out of wedlock" And even with all she helped defeat in her world, it still had many pockets of sexism, that wouldn't allow her to end it, and she would eventually wish the best for the child, which would most likely than naught be forcefully removed from her after its birth to be given to a married couple. So throughout her entire pregnancy, she searches, until she finds a window in Oxford that had been missed when the others were closed, because the amount of Dust had leveled out. She will be confronted by an angel when she reaches it, and Lyra tells her what she wants to do. The angel will grant her one week to leave the window open, she agrees, and crosses into our oxford. Through channels she is able to track down Will who is a surgeon now, at his hospital. She has purposely waited until she reached very near her due date, so her child and their daemon would be born in Will's world so it would be safe, out of the grasp of the authority of her world. Of course Will helps when Lyra delivers the child, maybe leaving two to three days before the window will be closed by the angel. Even if it is not his, Lyra asks Will to take care of them, Will says he would, but pleads with her to stay, to find some medical research that would allow her to live there longer than ten years. But, Lyra says no, because it would be better if they never knew her instead of having to watch her slowly die in 10 years. The child is a boy, which she asks to be named John, after Will's father. Throw in things and a gut wrenching, beautiful goodbye and, that's my fan fiction lol. Now I seriously need to think about writing this
