All faces is not missing according to Islam. İt is not about Islam. :) The monastery was abandoned in the early 20th century and remained empty. Visitors damaged the frescoes, writing names , dates and wishes in various languages. Some wrote notes in German, French and English,Turkish too.

Yes the monastery was indeed abandoned during 20th century. And during that time uneducated young local vandals came and scratched off all the faces of icons because that does not align with Islam beliefs to show faces of saints. This could be found all around Turkiye in Greek churches including Hagia Sophia.
