Only in Cali would you have to pay $$$ and jump though hoops and loops to put up a tower. So glad I live out in the country in Texas.

This is good showing how radials affect things. But does coax length matter? I did a similar thing with a half wave length of coax for a video to show C.B.'ers their 'tuned coax' is not needed. They are obsessed with it. I made mine for 14.040 MHz and measured my loss on an oscilloscope and 50 Ω dummy load, results below.: 14. 04 MHz, 1 Volt lost. 10.10 MHz, 1 Volt lost. 18.10 MHz, 1 Volt lost. 'Tuned coax' theory would say it works at only 14.040 MHz. It's not tuned to these other frequencies. My 'tuned coax' worked as well at 10 and 18 as at 14. I put my two parallel 100 Ω dummy load resistors on my tuned coax and my VNA showed it was almost flat from 1.8 MHz to 29 MHz. Where has my tuned coax gone? I say almost because I don't know how good the resistors are and are certainly not good above 50 MHz My five dipoles on two coax cables can't work very well because I didn't tune the coax!. G4GHB.

I want 2m 440 in a base station and others might say just buy a portable but there is no comparison to the features you get with these bands in the 991a. Why others dont include it is beyond me. I've been out of it for 30yrs and cant believe they haven't incorporated a rig like this into a uniden like sds 100 scanner as well. If it's all about information in a diaster, it's impossible to leave out the best trunking scanner.

@bill-2018Ай бұрын
Oh no! Not coax length again. Look, adjust the aerial not the coax. My dipoles must be bad then. 20m to 10m, five dipoles with two coax lengths of about 25 feet. My inverted vee for 60m has about 45 feet of coax. SWR on all at or below 1.5:1. He's saying I can't adjust them! I'll remember this when I'm communicating with people. Do people not realise the coax length to the 'aerial side' of the SWR meter and the 'transmitter side' do not exist? There is one length of coax with a meter placed in it. There is one cable even though two can be seen. Cutting the 'aerial side' is wasted as the length changes when the SWR meter and jumper are put in. Tx to SWR meter I choose either 20 inches or 45 inches of coax depending where I put things. Wrong lengths again! Nothing changes here if I join them together even at 28 MHz.. What about my 4 element 2m collinear. What coax length would he say I should use for that? I've about 10 or 12 feet. G4GHB.

You will probably never see this. I bought the same radio from the same place DX engineering and they gave me about a dozen stickers. They must have heard you. I won’t leave my call sign because I don’t have a P.O. Box set up don’t want everybody to know where I live. Nice watching just used my radio the first time tonight and you thought me a lot. Much appreciated. Thanks. 73

I still have to watch the whole video...but coax length ?? Are still talking about that. I'm not an EE but I've studied physics. What I remember, is that coax has a characteristic impedance. That means it's always 50 or 75, whatever, Siemens. The Smith chart will be a circle as you walk along the length of the coax. The load doesn't care if it sees a reactive input or not. Phase would matter if we are running a phased array or something complicated but not for a single antenna. Now I'll watch the rest find how wrong I am. EDIT: I didn't add, that shorter is always better with coax b/c of Ohmic losses and dielectric leaks.
@bill-2018Ай бұрын
His graph at 37.46 is very similar to what I got with my 'magic half wave' coax for 14.040 MHz with a 50 Ω dummy load on the end. Fairly flat from 1.8 MHz to 29 MHz. It has to be an aerial/balun problem. Expecting the aerial to do too much? I intend doing a video which is why i cut my coax to length showing C.B.'ers their 'magic' length of coax disappears when they add the SWR meter and jumper length, the frequency of course goes down. G4GHB.

W1AJF It would be help full to know the size of the rack box that is being used . IE. 4U, 6U etc. , so we can get an idea of how much gear will actually fit into what size box.

Question you also need to factor in the length of your jumpers right? Example you figure out how long your coax needs to be lets say (X) so then it would be X minus the length of any jumpers right?

I would get both if I had the money. But since I don’t, I bought the FT 991A. And coincidentally, I got mine from DX Engineering as well.

just disapointing. just show how dificult it is to actually find people that actually understand what they are talking about. funny how to the question: "how do you know the number of turns" the answer is "I've got this number of turns". Huh?? Instead, the right answer would have been to talk about the winding ratio as it relates to the input and transformed impedance ratio.

Thank you for the excellent information. What was said is a practical way to have a safe and low-noise ham shack. Doing this will go a long way to enjoying your radio. I do wish the slides he showed could be downloaded for reference.
@N1IA-43 ай бұрын
Grounding, in actual practice, does little or nothing to reduce RFI or noise. Ferrite donuts with your cables wrapped around them reduce or eliminate it. Grounding was covered by Kristen K6WX recently, and confirmed that we are overthinking grounds for day to day operation. It does next to nothing. In fact, running the rig "ground log" with wire to a buried ground rod actually invites lightning into the shack. It is Physics 101. No EE required.
@FlyGuy20003 ай бұрын
Neat product, but it is not lightning safe to run the feed line straight down into your attic. If you have fire damage after a strike the insurance company is going to deny any claim for compensation unless it is consumed in the fire.

I still think they are finicky to install. I hear it click, but yet the wire pin assembly pops out. Then if there is a tension on the connector, the plug pulls apart. I love the locking connectors with soldered pins. More secure and easier to install. That’s my personal opinion.

So here we are 4 years later. I'm adding things to my FT-991A here and have picked up the PROFX6V3 and have all my channel 1 knobs set to be mid-range which seems to be right, but I do have a questions. on the Mixer, Low Cut on or off? Also on the Pyle PDC21 direct box that you have there. on the input, Ground button on or off and on the output side for the ATT switch, should it be set at 0, -20, or -40db? Anyone?
@stevjaty3 ай бұрын
Michael, did you ever get an answer to this question? I am in the same boat.
@michaelwenmanK7USN3 ай бұрын
@@stevjaty I did not get an aswer. I did ditch the Pyle PDC21 Direct Box and used a Pyle mini hum eliminator instead. my RFI went away... but wait.. not so fast. It only lasted 1 day. the day after everything was working, all of a sudden nothing was working. A friend monitoring a freq said he could only hear what sounded like an amplified RFI signal being jammed onto the freq. I'm thinking that that is because I used an Amazon special condenser mic and the 48v phantom pwr is interfeering. I will return this and get a Heil PR-781 Dynamic mic that can be connected directly to the radio with a Heil SLR to RJ45 adapter that has footswitch / hand key jack on it.
