I remember wondering why lowly Miami kept scheduling powerful opponents throughout the 70s. They'd always lose. Little did I know they were collecting big checks to play those opponents to build up their program.

His talent was unmatched!!! He had heart, size, speed and a certain meanness about him as a running back. Congratulations "Ghost", "MB" and "Mel-B"

Dennis Erickson's offense would be effective in 2024 with minimal modification. Yes, it would likely operate out of the shotgun and have a couple of RB passing routes added in. But, the base ideas such as defensive displacement, keeping a defense from getting centered on the formation would enable easy zone running and keep the defense away from the ball during passing. His formations and methods would give coaches using the 3-3-5 stack and 4-2-5 especially fits. When deploying his doubles, trey or trips especially, blitzing LBs or DBs would be identified quickly and likely have to bail on blitzes cover a slot receiver on an option route. The defensive backfield has the obligation of shifting over to the side containing the receivers to try and make their coverage effective. In that case, the RB or TE opens up or has a favorable matchup on the closed side of the formation. Nice part is it easily compromises the smaller structures of modern defense such as the 3-3-5 and 4-2-5. Its a simple offense to install and teach also. I am lucky my coach was a grad assistant of his and i learned this system.

Everyone always leaves Daryl Williams out when speaking about great defensive backs to come out of Miami. However, I would put him right up there with the Ed Reed’s and Sean Taylor’s of the world.
