This is one of a kind performance of the Diabelli Variations. Richter was one of the greatest pianist ever. Another brilliant performance was the play of the last Schubert sonata in H-major D960.

ik was toevallig in Amsterdam uit Mexico op familie bezoek, maar het gekkenis dat het muzikaal geen herinneringswaardige belevenis vond. Maar ik geloof dat SR twee keer is geweest met de Diabelli Variations, jaren uit elkaar

Leuk om je reactie te lezen, Jan. Ja wel gek dat je aan dat recital van 2 juli 1986 geen speciale herinnering hebt. Ik ben twee keer naar Richter geweest. De eerste maal was naar het recital (in de grote zaal van het Concertgebouw d.d. 2 juli 1986) waarvan ik de huidige opname op YT heb gezet. Hij speelde toen alles wat ik hier, en in het andere filmpje van Richter van 2 juli 1986 op YT heb gezet. Het was de eerste keer dat ik de Diabelli variaties hoorde; daarna heb ik ze nog vele malen beluisterd, m.n. van deze opname van Richter. De beste die ik ken. Voor 1986 zou hij ook in Amsterdam zijn geweest, maar dat optreden heb ik niet bezocht (ik woonde nog niet in Amsterdam en was te jong). Volgens recensies was het bijzonder dat hij in 1986 toch weer naar Amsterdam kwam, want hij zou de keer daarvoor toen hij in Amsterdam speelde Amsterdam hebben afgezworen, omdat hij ziek was geworden. Maar hij kwam dus toch weer, gelukkig. Na 1986 is hij nog een keer in Amsterdam in het Concertgebouw gekomen (datum heb ik niet paraat, en ook een opname ervan heb ik niet). Ik had van dat recital (ik meen s middags 14 u) grote verwachtingen. Ik herinner mij dat hij de Sonata Apassionata van Beethoven speelde. Maar helaas viel dat een beetje tegen. De uitvoering van dat stuk kon niet tippen aan de fantastische, vlammende uitvoering die ik had op een l.p. uitgebracht door Melodia. Wat hij verder speelde die middag herinner ik mij niet meer; echter de Diabelli variaties zat daar zeker niet bij, die speelde hij echt niet toen.

I was there, having travelled from Mexico. I think it was DFL 85 a ticket and I've gotta say there wasn't anything memorable about this all - Beethoven recital. That was unusual in itself.

Fabulous. This piece of music (the whole film soundtrack) plugs me into something I can't seem to ever describe adequately: it feels like something before and beyond me, as if Glass channeled something vast, terrifying, even primaeval though this music. Yours is a superb rendition in the perfect acoustic space.

I live in Mexico but was in Amsterdam to coincide with his previous visit to the Concertgebouw around 1980-1981. He played the Beethoven Diabelli Variations which are not his best work IMO. The evening was not uinforgettable something I had not believed possible.

Richter non è una macchina, risente delle sue tensioni. Moltissimi anni fa tenne un concerto a Rovereto ( Trentino ) . Alla fine si scusò col pubblico x aver suonato male...anche questa è grandezza!

Yuja Wang was born in 1987, so if you heard her perform the Hammerklavier in 1986 she must have been precocious indeed.

you're completely right. What a strange error. It was in 2016 that I heard Yuja Wang playing the Hammerklavier sonata. I corrected this error. Thank you.

How can a master among many titans perform Beethoven sonata, played by so many, in such a unique way, that it sounds very different from any pianist I’ve ever heard- and I heard many, best of the best.

Helaas, ik heb geen idee. Ik was koorknaap in die tijd, zong dus slechts. De koorschool bestaat helaas niet meer en dirigent Heijblok is overleden, dus het is ook niet na te vragen. Wel leuk, dat je hierop stuitte! Heeft mijn werk om e.e.a. te archiveren toch enig nut.

Arrh yes the ‘notorious’ Amsterdam recital recording. Nobody offering comment on this performance as noted that Richter’s piano goes increasingly out of tune as the performance progresses; this fact maybe less of a problem if the are less sensitive to pitch, but I personally turn to other performances where the instrument is more in tune. Rumour has it that Richter ( a performer who famously professed indifference to has recorded live performances), is said to have been less that enamoured of his performance at this recital, demanded the master tapes be given to him, and after his returned to Russia re-worked sections, and in the process wrecked the whole with an instrument clearly out of tune; this may explain how certain sections are out of tune rather than it being progressive. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a great interpretation !

Die späte Veröffentlichung von Richters Amsterdamer Konzertabend im Jahr 1986 darf als Glücksfall für die Nachwelt angesehen werden. Sie zeigt noch einmal die große Kunst dieses Pianisten: die äußere und innere Reinheit, ja, die Keuschheit seines Spiels - die Ehrfurcht vor dem Komponisten und die große Liebe... nicht zu sich selbst sondern zur Musik.
