Congrats on 101 years! Love my pocket warmers and hope to have one of each size soon
These aren't really intended to be turned off, however, there are several ways to do so. This is basically the same as a fire, just without a flame. It's still "burning" hydrocarbons using oxygen. It can do this because the catalyst "helps" the reaction along. One way you can turn these off is sealing it in an air-tight container, like a sealable plastic bag so you can get as much air out as possible. After the remaining oxygen is depleted, it can't react anymore. Note: you need to wait for it to cool down, otherwise the hot element can resume the reaction when exposed to more oxygen, but this shouldn't take very long. Another way is you can just remove the burner to separate it from the fuel, which will stop the reaction. Once cooled down you can return the burner to the device. Of course, the burner will be quite hot, so you need to be careful.

@@seigeengine You can cut off the end of a balloon and then when you want to turn the device off, wrap it around the top half of the hand warmer

@@seigeengine Your comment described the macro solution, covering any object which seals out air. My comment described the micro solution, covering only one particular object that accomplishes multiple goals. So it's not simply a case of "aka your first comment". A cut off balloon cuts off the oxygen supply to the hand warmer, is small and thin enough to stuff into your pocket or inside the little carrying bag for the hand warmer, and simultaneously allows you to conserve the fuel after you've turned the device off, because if you just put the hand warmer inside of a Ziploc bag, all of those fumes from the fuel will fill the bag, so you're not saving any fuel that way, and Ziploc bags actually leak fumes through their micro pores, so you will find that your hand warmer is drained of its fuel. It's also a much simpler method of carrying multiple hand warmers in your pocket, turned off, but filled with fuel, And it simultaneously locks the metal lid onto the bottom when you slide it over the balloon that's already covering the bottom half of the hand warmer.

@@michael-bell Cool. I assumed anyone capable of reading could figure out a solution appropriate to their situation. Reducing loss of fuel while it's off is a separate concern. I certainly would not advise storing these full of fuel long-term.
